"Xiao Ren, are you comfortable interviewing in a public setting like this? Or shall we move to a private meeting?" Director Chen asked.
"I’ll leave it up to the Production Team’s arrangement. I’m fine with either choice," Lin Haoren answered politely.
"Then we’ll hold the interview here." Director Chen nodded, then gestured to the cameraman to prepare for recording.
"Xiao Ren, would you like to look at the questions first to get a feel for things and mentally prepare yourself?" Director Chen asked.
"Better not, Old Chen. I think I would be even more nervous during the interview if I did," Lin Haoren replied with a wry smile before adding, "Besides, my raw reaction should have the best entertainment value, right?"
Director Chen nodded approvingly.
"Since Xiao Ren is so understanding, we get the cameras rolling," Director Chen said, then gestured to the camera crew.
Lin Haoren couldn’t help but feel nervous.
After all, it was his first interview on a variety show—his first real chance to be under the lens and eventually appear on TV.
The experience was completely different from filming short videos with Oreo.
In the face of this unprecedented and unfamiliar opportunity, Lin Haoren’s body and facial expression became stiff and rigid like a block of wood.
"What aspect of A Home for Paws got you interested in joining?"
"The pay."
"..."
Director Chen’s expression went blank at Lin Haoren’s blunt and brutally honest answer.
"Ahem, anything else?"
"I like animals, I suppose."
Director Chen was once again taken aback by Lin Haoren’s answer.
"You suppose? You don’t sound very sure," Director Chen said doubtfully.
Lin Haoren glanced at Oreo and said, "I’m still deciding whether I like Oreo or hate him."
"If you didn’t like Oreo, why did you adopt him in the first place?"
"I found him dying on the roadside and couldn’t leave him to die. Besides, don’t we all have love-hate relationships with family members? What really matters is that I treat him right."
"So you chose to save Oreo out of moral obligation?"
"Actually, he chose to be saved by me," Lin Haoren corrected.
Director Chen quickly understood that Oreo was a stray cat Lin Haoren had saved out of moral obligation and not necessarily due to a love for animals.
However, he was beginning to see the dynamic relationship between Lin Haoren and Oreo. They were less like owner and pet and more like siblings.
Such a family bond had a stronger love than any casual affection.
"Would you say you’re Oreo’s owner?"
"Legally, yes."
"And in practice?"
"We are still negotiating."
"Pftt!"
Director Chen stifled his laughter as he moved on to the next question.
"What would you do if Oreo refused to cooperate during filming?"
"I would apologize to the production team."
"Why apologize?"
"Because there is nothing I can do either." Lin Haoren gave a helpless shrug.
Director Chen struggled to maintain his expression as he fought back the urge to laugh.
"Are you experienced with taking care of animals?"
"I have successfully kept one cat alive."
"Only one?" Director Chen raised an eyebrow in surprise.
Lin Haoren furrowed his brows and said, "I’d like to emphasize that he’s doing very well."
"Hahahaha..."
Assistant Du and the camera crew laughed in the background. Director Chen’s lips also curved several times.
No one expected Lin Haoren to be so amusing.
They couldn’t help but feel that this interview would provide a lot of entertainment value for the show.
"What do you think you can contribute to the program?"
"A cat."
"Besides Oreo?"
"A handsome man, maybe?"
"You don’t sound so confident in your own appearance."
"I’m still getting used to it," Lin Haoren said honestly.
His Appearance has only just reached the bare minimum qualification for being handsome according to the system.
However, other people’s scores may differ.
As such, confidently claiming he was handsome would only generate a wave of backlash.
"Do you think you will get along with the other guests?"
"Probably."
"You don’t sound very confident in this aspect either."
"I’m very confident in myself, but I’m less confident in other people."
Director Chen nodded, acknowledging Lin Haoren’s point.
It was easy to get along with others, but very difficult if they didn’t want to get along with you.
"What do you hope to gain from participating in the program?"
"Experience."
"Anything else?"
"Money."
Director Chen stared at Lin Haoren, who looked back at him innocently.
"I’m an honest man."
Everyone felt tickled by Lin Haoren’s honesty. There was nothing about it to be ashamed of.
"Any final words before we end the interview?"
"Yes."
"Go ahead."
"If Oreo becomes the most popular guest on the show..." Lin Haoren paused, then said, "Please remember that I was the one who signed the contract."
"And what does that make you?"
"His agent."
Everyone laughed at Lin Haoren’s answer.
The interview ended successfully—more than what Director Chen had hoped.
With the addition of someone easygoing and amusing like Lin Haoren, Director Chen believed A Home for Paws had hope of making a comeback.
The interview was only meant to help the production team understand Lin Haoren’s character, so they could plan his interaction segment with the other guests smoothly.
After all, the show would suffer if the special guest couldn’t get along with the other guests.
No one had expected the interview to have such entertainment value.
It would be a pity not to use it.
Director Chen himself did not ask all of his prewritten questions as planned. He had to improvise to match Lin Haoren’s unexpected answers. Yet, it was also such an improvisation that kept the interview successful.
This interview segment definitely had to be included in a special episode.
"Thank you for coming, Xiao Ren. I look forward to working with you." Director Chen shook Lin Haoren’s hand warmly and said, "Let Xiao Dudu take you back to the hotel and rest."
"Tomorrow, Xiao Dudu will take you to the filming location at around 9:00 AM."
"Alright, Director Chen. See you tomorrow."
