Evolutionary Superstar

Chapter 82: Side Quest: Center of Attention

Shortly after Lin Haoren spoke, the system pinged.

Ding!

[Congratulations, Host! You have officially joined the A Home For Paws Variety Show.]

[As someone destined to become the brightest star under the heavens, you are expected to shine wherever you are, especially under the scrutiny of the lens. A new Side Quest has been issued.]

[Side Quest: Center of Attention]

[Objective: Outshine every other guest on the variety show by achieving the most viewers.]

[Reward: A Beginner-Level Gift Pack]

[Note: For every 100,000-viewer lead, the base reward multiplier will increase by 1x. For every 1,000,000-viewer lead, the base reward level will be raised by 1x.]

Lin Haoren stared at the new quest and couldn’t help but give a helpless smile.

The bonus reward multiplier sounded amazing, but achieving it was anything but easy.

After all, most of his viral fame was focused on Oreo.

He himself was just a new face on TV, yet he was competing with TV show veterans and big names like Jiang Ruolan, whose viewers were usually even higher than the main production feed.

Moreover, he had just given up the team leader position.

What could he do to steal the spotlight?

...

"I’m not suitable for the team leader position either. How about we leave it to Brother Guo or Sister Jiang, the Big Brother and Big Sister of the show?" Qin Mo said with a smile.

"I don’t dare to claim the ’Big Brother’ title in front of you, Brother Qin," Guo Zhenyu smiled wryly before saying, "I think we’d better leave the team leader position to Sister Jiang."

"I don’t dare to face Sister Jiang’s angry fans. I would be drowned in their spit if I tried to compete with her," Guo Zhenyu said, scratching his head sheepishly.

"Then, I will reluctantly accept the team leader position," Jiang Ruolan said gracefully.

Team Retirement Home quickly decided on their team leader without any competition.

However, it was the complete opposite for Team Youth Squad.

"I will be the team leader," Wei Xinya asserted willfully.

As the team leader, she would definitely have priority in holding Oreo.

"No way!" Xu Kaichen immediately refused, questioning her qualifications. "Why should you be the team leader? Why can’t I be team leader?"

"Why? Because my team is called Youth Squad, and I am the youngest! It only makes sense for me to be the team leader!" Wei Xinya argued with her twisted logic.

Xu Kaichen became flustered, unable to argue back.

How do you reason with an unreasonable person? Would they care about your reasoning?

"How about you two compete fair and square with scissors, paper, rock?" Lu Chengxi suggested, seeking a peaceful resolution.

However, Fang Ning raised an eyebrow.

"You two? What about me? Do I not even have the right to compete for the position?" Fang Ning complained with her hands on her hips.

Lu Chengxi immediately panicked.

"How could that be? I’ve misspoken, Sister Fang. I meant the three of you should compete with scissors, paper, rock," Lu Chengxi quickly explained flatteringly.

However, Xu Kaichen and Wei Xinya weren’t happy to hear this.

"What? You also want to compete for this position, Sister Fang?" Wei Xinya pouted.

Fang Ning smiled playfully, replying, "Can’t I?"

"You can’t!" Xu Kaichen stated anxiously.

If he competed only against Wei Xinya, he would at least have a 50% chance of winning. But if Fang Ning also joined, it would be reduced to 33%.

Ultimately, Fang Ning won the scissors, paper, rock against Xu Kaichen and Wei Xinya and became the team leader of Team Youth Squad.

Xu Kaichen sighed with regret, while Wei Xinya cried with a broken heart.

"No~! Oreo, my little cutie. Boohoo, it wasn’t meant to be..."

"Sister Wei, you can hold Oreo for now."

"Eh, really?! Then everything is fine!"

Upon receiving Fang Ning’s permission, Wei Xinya’s face changed faster than flipping a page in a book.

She didn’t seem like she was heartbroken earlier at all.

’What an actress...’ Xu Kaichen’s lips twitched.

...

"Alright, everyone, listen up," Director Chen demanded everyone’s attention, announcing, "Both teams will have 30 minutes to plan your rescue strategy."

"Please refer to the building plan later and avoid leaving the designated safe route," Director Chen said seriously.

Although Qingshan Warehouse No.13 had been cleared by the production team, it was still an abandoned warehouse full of safety hazards.

They couldn’t eliminate every existing safety hazard; they could only reduce the number to a manageable level. The guests were safe as long as they didn’t venture into the restricted areas.

If the Ironpaw Duchess hid in the restricted area, they could only rely on their wits and tricks to lure her out.

After Director Chen’s briefing finished, the two teams began to convene and strategize.

"The Production Team was quite thoughtful. They actually marked eight locations for the Ironpaw Duchess’s potential hiding spot," Jiang Ruolan mentioned as she studied the building plan with the team.

"However, finding the Ironpaw Duchess isn’t the difficult part; earning her trust and winning her over before Team Two is."

"Brother Lin, do you have any good strategy to win the Ironpaw Duchess over?" Jiang Ruolan asked.

Since the Production Team invited Lin Haoren to the show as a special guest, she figured he might be an expert with some special skills.

Even if he wasn’t, she didn’t mind helping him attract some attention to kickstart his career in the industry.

As a senior in the industry, she should naturally help out her juniors wherever she could. After all, it wasn’t easy for newcomers to make a name for themselves.

"Hmm, we can use treats and sweet words to lure her out," Lin Haoren said simply.

Jiang Ruolan listened seriously, then waited a bit, but heard nothing further from Lin Haoren. Her mind went blank for a moment.

"That’s it?" Jiang Ruolan uttered with a dumbfounded look.

Lin Haoren nodded, staring back at her innocently.

"It might be the oldest trick in the book and a simple one at that, but it’s a time-tested method. Its effectiveness shouldn’t be underestimated," he said sheepishly.

"Are you sure you don’t want to take this chance to elaborate further? Jiang Ruolan pressed.

Lin Haoren smiled bitterly, realizing Jiang Ruolan’s kind intentions.

However, it wasn’t necessary.

"Sister Jiang, there’s no need to give me special attention. If your fans think you have feelings for me or something, I’m afraid I won’t even know how I will die," Lin Haoren teased jokingly with a soft chuckle.

"I’m just a small fry; I can’t take that kind of heat."

Jiang Ruolan didn’t expect to be teased like this and blushed; then she glared at Lin Haoren for not understanding her kind intentions.
