Chapter 79: Chapter 79
Bella’s Point of View
After I learned the news about Fred’s disgraceful scandal, I was pacing back and forth in my room, I was so angry. I was shaking from head to toe. To think that the whole pack village had seen him hauled out in his underwear with a secret mistress while our families were actively planning our wedding, it was the ultimate humiliation.
At this exact time, a light knock sounded on my door, and my father’s personal messenger told me that the my father was requesting my presence in the high council hall immediately.
I didn’t even stop to fix my hair or smooth down my dress, I marched down there.
When I finally pushed open the double doors of the council hall, the room was dead silent. I found my parents and my grandmother all sitting around the big table. The moment I stepped inside, they stopped whispering and turned to look at me, every single one of them wearing a deeply worried and anxious expression on their faces.
My father, Alpha Jaden, looked up from his stack of maps, his broad shoulders slouching with exhaustion. He cleared his throat, his deep voice sounding unusually soft. "Bella, sit down, please. We need to discuss what happened with Fred."
"I don’t want to sit down, Father," I said.
My father let out a long sigh, running a hand over his face. "Alright. Then tell me plainly—how do you want us to deal with this matter? The palace officials are involved now, and Lord Khalid is begging for an audience tomorrow morning to apologize."
I didn’t hesitate for even a single second. I looked him in the eye and delivered my whole heart. "I want to call off the engagement entirely, Father. I want nothing to do with him or his family ever again." I said.
My mother gasped loudly, her hand flying to her chest. "Bella, think about what you are saying! The announcements have already been sent to the royal court!"
"I have thought about it, Mother!" I shot back, turning my furious gaze toward her. "I don’t want to marry such a pathetic playboy who thinks it is acceptable to have several secret mistresses before even taking a formal wife! I am the daughter of an Alpha. I refuse to live a miserable, secondary life like that after marriage, constantly wondering which inn my husband is hiding in with a woman."
The room went completely quiet for a long moment, the tension suffocating us all. My grandmother, who had been sitting quietly in her chair, finally looked at me with a very stern expression, Grandma hesitated a bit, before she spoke.
"Bella, sweet child, you are letting your anger blind your vision," she said.
“Grandma.” I let out.
"You must look at the bigger picture here. Fred is not just any random pack guy... he is Alpha Alaric’s blood nephew. Alpha Alaric’s Silverside Pack is currently the largest and most powerful territory in the entire werewolf kingdom. Not only that, but Alaric also possesses the legendary Treasure Box that can keep the entire kingdom victorious in any war."
“Your grandmother is making a point.” My mother said.
“Mother please...”
"Anna, let me talk to the girl.” My grandmother said to my mother. Then she gave me. “And you cannot forget the royal connection, Bella. Fred’s direct aunt, Aithusa, is the Alpha King’s second wife. If you swallow your pride and marry Fred despite this little mistake, your future social status in the capital will be incredibly high. You will outrank almost every woman in this territory."
I felt a sickening wave of disdain wash over me as I listened to her words. It was a terrible betrayal of my own happiness that my own grandmother was looking at me like I was a piece of meat to be traded for favor. She didn’t care that Fred had completely humiliated me in front of the palace officials.
She only cared about the gold and the titles that came with his family name. To them, my broken heart was just a small price to pay to get close to the Alpha King’s court.
Then, to my disappointment, my mother also agreed with Grandma’s cruel logic. She nodded her head, as she looked at me with a pleading expression.
"Your grandmother is right, Bella. If you call off the engagement right now, the scandal will ruin your own reputation across the nations. People will say you were rejected, or that you are too difficult to please. It will make it incredibly difficult for you to choose the right, high-ranking person later on. You will be left with nothing." My mother said.
Hearing my own mother protect a cheating liar instead of me, her daughter was a devastating blow. The hurt cut through my chest, but it instantly hardened into defiance.
Before I could even shout at her, my father slammed his fist down onto the table. He turned to my mother. "Anna! What on earth are you saying right now?" my father growled.
"Look at your daughter! She is deeply hurt right now, and you are sitting there talking about her social ranking and future suitors? Have you lost your mind?"
My mother flinched back, her mouth closing instantly as my father defended me.
My eyes burning with unshed tears as I looked at the three of them. I didn’t care about their alliances or whatever anymore.
"You all talk about my status, but none of you care about my actual life," I told them, I had to let them know how I felt.
"I am telling you right now, if I am forced by you to get married to that disgusting man, I will have to risk my very life to escape it."
Upon hearing my words, both my grandmother and my father were greatly shocked.
I stared at their stunned, silent faces. Yes, I expected the reaction. But I wasn’t bluffing.
"I’m not making an empty threat to get my way, Father," I said, my voice dead serious. "If you dare force me to walk down that aisle with him, I’ll kill myself before I ever let him touch me. Damn Fred, and damn his entire bloodline."
