Chapter 204: Chapter
Fu Sheng did not allow his gaze to linger on the isolated building for more than a heartbeat. Years of harsh experience had taught him that curiosity attracted unwanted attention faster than almost anything else. He lowered his eyes once more and continued walking at the steady, methodical pace expected of an ordinary servant.
Beside him, An Li did exactly the same. Neither of them spoke again until they had rounded another corner, slipping behind a dense row of flowering shrubs that lined the stone walkway.
Only then did An Li let out the breath she had been holding. "...That wasn’t part of Wei Meilan’s information."
Fu Sheng nodded almost imperceptibly. "No. The guards have either been stationed there permanently... or something has changed recently."
An Li frowned, her eyes scanning their surroundings. "I don’t like surprises."
"Neither do I."
Before either of them could expand on the thought, a loud burst of laughter echoed from the front courtyard. More guests had arrived, and the entire residence immediately plunged into a higher gear of frantic energy. Servants hurried past carrying heavy wine jars on their shoulders while others rushed toward the entrance with trays of refreshments.
A middle-aged supervisor suddenly appeared, clapping his hands loudly. "Move! Stop standing around! The distinguished guests are arriving!" He pointed a finger directly at Fu Sheng. "You! Take those cups to the eastern pavilion!" Then he spun toward An Li. "You’ll help in the main courtyard."
Fu Sheng and An Li exchanged the briefest, most fleeting glance. Their opportunity had arrived sooner than expected. Working separately meant they could explore more of the estate without drawing suspicion as a pair.
An Li gave an almost invisible nod, and Fu Sheng picked up his tray without another word. The two quietly separated.
As Fu Sheng crossed the residence, he paid close attention to the layout. The estate had been designed almost like a maze; beautiful gardens concealed narrow pathways, decorative walls interrupted direct lines of sight, and small stone bridges connected one winding courtyard to another. To an ordinary guest, it was elegant architecture. To someone attempting to move unnoticed, it offered countless hiding places.
He silently committed every route and alternative exit to memory. Several servants brushed past him without so much as a second glance. One elderly maid complained loudly about lazy kitchen workers, two young boys argued over missing wine cups, and a cook shouted because someone had forgotten a roasted duck.
When he entered the eastern pavilion, several wealthy merchants were already seated beneath beautifully embroidered silk canopies. Their expensive robes glittered under the morning sunlight, and jewelry flashed from almost every wrist and finger as their casual conversations drifted through the air.
"...I heard Bao Li secured another major shipment."
"...Business has never been better."
"...The Barren Lands will soon belong entirely to him."
Fu Sheng continued pouring tea without a single micro-expression reacting to their words, yet every sentence settled firmly into his memory.
Nearby, another servant accidentally dropped a porcelain cup. It shattered sharply across the stone floor, the sudden noise immediately drawing everyone’s attention.
"You useless fool!" The supervisor stormed forward, his face twisting in anger. "Do you know how expensive that was?"
The young servant turned deathly pale. "I-I’m sorry..."
"Sorry?" The supervisor raised his hand, leaning in to strike.
Before the slap could land, a calm, resonant voice interrupted. "Enough."
The courtyard fell dead silent, and every servant immediately lowered their head.
Fu Sheng did the same, adjusting his posture as slow, steady footsteps approached from behind. Even without looking, Fu Sheng could sense that whoever had arrived possessed immense, absolute authority.
The supervisor immediately bowed so deeply his back was nearly horizontal. "Master Bao."
Fu Sheng’s fingers tightened almost imperceptibly around the porcelain teapot.
*Bao Li.* So this was the man himself.
He carefully lifted his eyes just enough to peer through his lashes. The man appeared to be in his early40s. His robes were intricately embroidered with fine gold thread, and an expensive jade pendant rested against his chest.
His face wore a warm, easy smile.. a look that appeared genuinely kind, respectable, and even generous. Anyone unfamiliar with his reputation would never imagine this smiling man secretly controlled the brutal underworld of Tiger Alley.
Bao Li glanced briefly at the frightened servant. "It is only a cup," he said, his voice smooth and gentle. "No need to frighten him."
The supervisor bowed even lower. "Yes, Master Bao."
The young servant looked as though he had just been spared execution, hurriedly thanking Bao Li before scrambling away to clean up the broken shards. Bao Li merely smiled, then continued walking through the courtyard, greeting the arriving guests with practiced, charismatic warmth. Everywhere he passed, people smiled, laughed, and showered him with praise. No one saw the blood hidden beneath that pleasant smile.
Fu Sheng watched quietly from the periphery.
Then, Bao Li suddenly stopped walking. His head slowly turned, and for one terrifying second, his eyes landed directly on Fu Sheng.
Time itself seemed to freeze. Fu Sheng lowered his head instantly, maintaining the perfect, submissive posture expected of an ordinary servant. One second passed. Then two. Then three.
"More tea," Bao Li spoke casually, breaking the tension before continuing toward the main hall.
Only after the man disappeared did Fu Sheng allow himself a slow, quiet breath. His heartbeat remained perfectly steady, but he understood one thing very clearly: Bao Li was no ordinary criminal. The smile on that man’s face masked sharp, predatory eyes that missed absolutely nothing.
Meanwhile, An Li found herself inside the enormous estate kitchen, a scene that closely resembled a chaotic battlefield.
Thick steam filled the air, knives chopped endlessly against wooden boards, and massive iron pots boiled over roaring fires while head cooks shouted frantic orders in every direction.
"More vegetables!"
"Where’s the fish?"
"The wedding wine! Hurry! Hurry!"
An Li blended into the chaos instantly. She picked up vegetables, delivered bowls, and carried heavy cauldrons of soup. No one questioned her; everyone was simply too busy to care, which was exactly what she had hoped for.
While moving between the crowded prep stations, her eyes quietly searched every doorway, hallway, and staircase. It was then that she noticed something unusual.
Unlike the other servers, several men dressed as kitchen workers never actually entered the main cooking area. Instead, they repeatedly carried large, heavily covered food containers out toward the isolated, two-story building. One after another, they made the trek, yet none of them ever returned carrying empty containers.
An Li’s eyes narrowed slightly. ’Interesting.’
She casually continued chopping vegetables while silently counting the rotations. One delivery. Two. Three. Five.
It was far too much food for only a handful of guards. Something, or someone else, was being hidden inside that building.
