Chapter 209: Chapter
While Su Long and Han Fuji were facing Bao Zhao at the warehouse, the wedding banquet at the main estate was in full swing.
Loud music filled the air. Guests laughed, drank expensive wine, and praised the grand decorations. But in the shadows of the beautiful courtyards, Fu Sheng and An Li were moving. They had a plan, but the estate was quickly turning into a dangerous maze.
---
Fu Sheng stood in the servants’ corridor, a heavy wooden tray of empty wine cups in his hands. He kept his head low, but his eyes never stopped moving.
The busy banquet was the perfect cover.
He had spent the last hour memorizing the guards’ patrol paths. The two-story building at the edge of the estate was heavily guarded, but Fu Sheng had found a gap. Every ten minutes, the guards shifted positions. For exactly thirty seconds, the left side of the building was left completely unwatched.
That was his window.
When the guards turned to walk their new route, Fu Sheng dropped his tray into a nearby washbasin. He moved like a shadow, slipping across the grass and pressing his back against the cold stone wall of the forbidden building.
He reached for a small window on the ground floor. It was unlatched. With quiet, practiced movements, he climbed through the opening and dropped silently onto the floor inside.
The room was pitch black and smelled of old paper and ink. He held his breath, listening for any sound of movement. Nothing.
Fu Sheng slowly walked toward a large wooden desk in the center of the room. This had to be where Bao Li kept his private papers. If the ledger was in this building, it would be here. He reached out and touched the desk drawer. It wasn’t locked.
He pulled it open, but instead of stacks of papers or a thick account book, there was only one thing inside. A single, clean piece of white paper.
Fu Sheng frowned. He picked up the paper and held it up to the dim light filtering through the window. There was writing on it:
"I welcomed you into my home, yet you did not even bring a wedding gift, Fu Sheng."
Fu Sheng’s body went completely cold.
Before he could even drop the paper, the heavy wooden doors of the room swung open. Bright light from the hallway flooded the room, blinding him for a second.
Four heavily armed guards stepped into the room, their swords drawn and pointed directly at Fu Sheng’s chest. Standing in front of them was a sharp-eyed man, Bao Li’s right-hand man. He stared down at Fu Sheng with a cold, mocking sneer.
"You and your wife just arrived at the Barren Lands just a month ago," the right-hand man said, his voice dripping with amusement. "And you are already trying to do something as foolish as angering Tiger Alley."
Fu Sheng didn’t move a muscle, but his mind raced. They knew exactly who he was. They knew about Su Long.
Bao Li’s right-hand man stepped closer, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword. "Master Bao Li would have killed you and your entire family off in one night. But he decided to be lenient and let you scheme foolishly. He wanted to see just how far you would go."
Fu Sheng slowly let the paper slide from his fingers. The terrifying truth settled in.
Bao Li hadn’t been tricked at all. He had been watching them play their game from the very beginning.
.....
At the same time, An Li was moving through the inner residential area of the estate.
Earlier, before they had separated, Fu Sheng had pulled her aside. "If you get the chance, find Wei Meilan," he had told her. "Make sure she is alright. If Bao Li suspects anything, she will be the first one he punishes."
An Li had taken those words to heart. She had used her role as a food server to slip past the kitchen boundaries and enter the quiet, red-decorated bridal quarters. Unlike the loud banquet outside, this part of the estate was dead silent.
An Li walked down the long hallway, carrying a small tray of wedding pastries as an excuse. As she neared the main bridal room at the end of the hall, she heard the muffled sound of an angry voice.
She stopped. The voice was low, but it carried a sharp, deadly edge. It was Bao Li.
An Li quietly set her tray on a small table in the hallway. She crept toward the door of the bridal room, pressing her ear against the thin wooden panel.
"I gave you everything," Bao Li’s voice growled from inside. "A comfortable life. My trust. And this is how you repay me?"
"I don’t know what you are talking about!" a woman’s voice cried out. It was Wei Meilan. She sounded terrified, her voice shaking violently. "I swear, I didn’t do anything!"
"Do not lie to me!" Bao Li roared.
*Crack!*
The sharp, heavy sound of a slap echoed through the door.
An Li flinched, her hand instinctively reaching for the small dagger hidden under her servant’s apron. She leaned closer, peeking through a tiny crack in the paper sliding door.
Inside the room, Wei Meilan was sprawled on the floor, holding her reddened cheek. Tears streamed down her face, her beautiful bridal hair completely messed up.
Bao Li stood over her, his kind, respectable face completely gone. In its place was the face of a monster. He gripped a heavy leather whip in his right hand.
"Your little friends from Unit Fifty are already dead," Bao Li said coldly, looking down at her with disgust. "I sent my brother to the warehouse to slaughter them. And the ones who tried to sneak into my estate as servants? They are currently walking straight into a trap."
He leaned down, grabbing Wei Meilan by her hair and forcing her to look at him. "Now, tell me who else is helping you, or I will make sure you do not live to see the end of our wedding day."
Outside the door, An Li’s breath caught in her throat. Her heart hammered against her ribs.
Fu Sheng was in danger. Su Long and the others were in danger. She had to make a choice, and she had to make it right now.
