Extra's Guide To Surviving The Apocalypse

Chapter 101 - 100:What Does Velaris Need?

Chapter 101: Chapter 100:What Does Velaris Need?

Iris spent the next hour walking through Velaris.

She did not have a specific destination in mind.

She simply wanted to look.

Not at the walls.

Not at the buildings.

At the people.

The settlement was still small.

There were no crowds filling the roads and no endless stream of merchants moving between buildings.

Velaris was nowhere near that stage.

But it was alive.

That alone was enough to make Iris stop several times.

Near one of the Garden Villas, a woman was hanging clothes outside. She paused when she noticed Iris, offered a small smile, then returned to what she was doing.

Farther down the road, two residents were discussing where they could gather wood.

Someone was carrying a basket of plants.

A few others were talking about the blacksmith who had recently settled in Velaris, apparently curious about what kind of work he could do.

Everyone seemed to have something to talk about.

Everyone seemed to be trying to figure out their place.

Iris watched them quietly.

It was different from the memories she carried.

In the original story, people had been forced to focus on the next meal, the next shelter, the next attack.

There had been no time to wonder what they could build.

No time to think about what they could become.

Here, there was at least enough safety for people to start asking those questions.

Yet Iris noticed something else.

Some people were simply standing around.

Waiting.

She watched one young man walk toward the road, stop, and turn back.

He looked around as though searching for something that was not there.

Another resident sat outside one of the dormitories with his elbows resting on his knees, staring at the ground.

They had shelter.

They had water.

They had food.

But that was not enough.

Iris understood that now.

Survival had brought them here.

It could not be the only thing keeping them here.

A place could protect someone from the outside world, but if there was nothing for them to do inside those walls, eventually they would begin wondering whether there was a reason to stay.

Iris had never wanted Velaris to become a place where people simply hid.

She wanted it to become somewhere they could live.

She approached the young man who had been wandering around.

"Are you looking for something?"

He startled and quickly straightened.

"No, Lady Iris."

"You were walking around for a while."

He scratched the back of his neck.

"I was wondering if there was any work."

Iris paused.

"What kind of work?"

"Anything, really."

That answer stayed with her.

Anything.

He was not asking for charity.

He wanted something useful to do.

Something that would make him feel like he was contributing instead of simply consuming whatever the territory provided.

Iris nodded.

"What’s your skill?"

He hesitated before answering.

"I used to repair equipment."

"Then we’ll need that."

His eyes lifted.

"You think so?"

"I know so."

She smiled.

"Give me a little time."

The young man nodded and walked away with noticeably lighter steps.

Iris watched him go.

His expression had changed completely.

It had only taken a few words.

A possibility.

A promise that his skills were useful.

Yet that small interaction made Iris think.

How many others were waiting for the same thing?

She looked around again.

Then she opened the Lord’s Panel.

003’s words returned to her.

Additional management functions are becoming relevant.

She selected the Directory.

The list of residents appeared.

Names.

Residency status.

Basic information.

Iris scrolled through them slowly.

There were not many.

That was something she had to remember.

Velaris was still in its early stages.

But even with its small population, the people living here were not identical.

They had different skills.

Different experiences.

Different things they could offer.

Some could fight.

Some could gather.

Some could build.

Others had knowledge that might prove useful later.

This was different from what she had been doing before.

When Velaris was only a territory, managing it had been simple.

Build walls.

Gather resources.

Protect the people.

But now there were residents.

People with skills.

People with needs.

People who wanted to contribute.

And that changed everything.

Iris opened the Village Center functions through the panel.

Recruitment.

Territory Announcements.

Mission Postings.

Resource Purchasing.

Resident Management.

Communication.

Trade Management.

She stopped at Mission Postings.

That was it.

Not a complicated system.

Not yet.

Just a way to connect people who needed work with people who needed something done.

Iris began thinking.

Wood needed gathering.

Stone needed gathering.

Plants needed collecting.

The roads would eventually need maintenance.

The buildings would eventually need repairs.

The blacksmith needed materials.

The gardens would need attention.

Hunters could provide meat.

People with knowledge of plants could help gather useful herbs.

Someone who knew tailoring could repair clothes.

Someone who could cook could prepare food for residents who did not have the time or ability to cook for themselves.

There were countless possibilities.

But Iris did not need to create everything at once.

Velaris was not ready for that.

Neither were its people.

The important thing was to start.

None of these things required Velaris to become a huge city.

They simply required people to know where they were needed.

Iris opened Mission Postings.

The interface waited.

She created the first task.

[Mission: Gather Wood]

[Objective: Collect usable wood within Velaris’s territory.]

[Reward: Territory-issued payment.]

She paused.

The reward needed to be fair.

Too little, and people would stop volunteering.

Too much, and the territory would burn through its resources.

Iris adjusted it carefully.

She considered how much time the task would require, how useful the resource was, and how many people might take the mission.

Then she settled on an amount.

It was not generous enough to make people abuse the system, but it was enough to make the effort worthwhile.

Then she created another.

[Mission: Gather Stone]

She added the necessary details before creating a third.

[Mission: Gather Useful Plants]

Iris stared at the list.

Three missions.

It was not much.

But it was a beginning.

She published them.

A few seconds later, the notifications reached the residents.

Across Velaris, people stopped what they were doing.

Some opened their panels immediately.

Others looked around in confusion, as though they had not expected anything new to appear.

Then someone shouted from the road.

"There’s work!"

Another voice answered.

"What kind?"

"Wood gathering!"

"Seriously?"

"Look at your panel!"

Within minutes, people began discussing it.

A few residents immediately started deciding who would gather wood and who would search for stone.

Someone else mentioned that they had experience identifying plants and would take the plant-gathering mission.

The quiet settlement suddenly sounded a little different.

Not crowded.

Not chaotic.

Just active.

Iris watched from a distance.

She smiled.

It was strange.

The territory had not changed physically.

No new building had appeared.

No wall had risen from the ground.

Nothing about the land itself looked different.

Yet something had changed.

People were no longer simply waiting for tomorrow.

They had something to do today.

Iris closed the panel.

Then she remembered the young man from earlier.

She turned and found him nearby.

He had apparently noticed the commotion and was looking at his own panel.

"You said you repaired equipment?"

He looked up.

"Yes."

"There’s a blacksmith here."

His expression brightened.

"Really?"

"Yes. Go introduce yourself."

The young man nodded quickly.

"Thank you, Lady Iris."

Then he hurried away.

Iris watched him leave.

She could not help smiling.

It was a small thing.

A conversation.

A task.

A possible job.

But maybe that was how a community was built.

Not through one grand decision.

Through hundreds of small ones.

She had expected building Velaris to be the difficult part.

Apparently, she had been wrong.

The difficult part was everything that came after.

A territory could have walls.

It could have houses.

It could have roads.

That did not make it a home.

People did.

Their work did.

Their relationships did.

The small choices they made every day did.

Iris looked around.

Velaris was still rough around the edges.

There were empty spaces where future buildings could one day stand.

There were resources they had not yet gathered.

There were systems they had barely begun to understand.

There were problems she had not even discovered yet.

The settlement still had a long way to go.

But for the first time, she did not find that frightening.

She found it exciting.

There was still so much to build.

Not just buildings.

Not just roads.

Not just walls.

A functioning community.

A place where people could wake up knowing they had somewhere to go and something meaningful to contribute.

A place where their skills mattered.

A voice came from behind her.

"Iris."

She turned.

Benjamin was approaching.

"What is it?"

"People are talking about the new missions."

"I noticed."

"They seem happy."

Iris smiled.

"Good."

Benjamin looked toward the road.

Several residents were already preparing to leave the settlement to complete their assigned tasks.

"Are you planning more?"

"Eventually."

"What kind?"

Iris thought about it.

There were too many possibilities to name.

Farming.

Construction.

Repairs.

Hunting.

Crafting.

Trading.

Even simple things like keeping the roads clear and maintaining the gardens could eventually become someone’s responsibility.

But she did not want to build everything just because she could.

She needed to understand what Velaris actually needed.

"Whatever Velaris needs."

Benjamin gave her a skeptical look.

"That’s a lot."

"I know."

He smiled faintly.

"Then I suppose you won’t be bored."

Iris laughed.

"Probably not."

They stood together for a moment, watching people move through the settlement.

The morning had started quietly.

Now, small groups were already beginning to move toward different parts of the territory.

One person carried a tool.

Another carried a basket.

Someone else was discussing where the best place to gather stone might be.

It was not much.

But it was movement.

Progress.

Life.

It was not perfect.

It was not large.

It was not safe enough to forget the world outside its walls.

But it was growing.

And perhaps that was what mattered.

Iris had spent so long trying to prevent the ending she remembered that she had forgotten something important.

Preventing an ending was not the same as creating a future.

She could stop Rose.

She could keep Caleb alive.

She could protect her family.

She could build walls strong enough to keep monsters out.

But none of that would be enough if Velaris itself had no future.

If she wanted this territory to survive, she could not simply react to disasters.

She had to build something worth protecting.

Something people would choose to stay for.

Something that could continue even when she was not standing over everyone, telling them what to do.

That was the part she had not understood before.

Survival was only the foundation.

Everything else had to be built on top of it.

She looked toward the road where several residents were already preparing to leave for their assigned tasks.

A small smile appeared on her face.

"Let’s see what happens next."

For once, she did not already know the answer.

And that was okay.

Because this was no longer the story she remembered.

It was theirs.

And Velaris was only beginning.
