Chapter 182: The Human Sector Breach
The morning light crept slowly over the stone peaks of Thaldrasil. The twenty-four hour countdown had officially expired.
The Captain stood in the deep shadows of an alleyway bordering the human diplomatic sector. He leaned his shoulder heavily against a damp brick wall.
He tasted bitter copper in the back of his throat. The middle-aged human host body was falling apart. His ribs groaned with every single breath he took.
He closed his eyes and focused his mind. He pushed a microscopic wave of kinetic force directly into his own chest.
[Cellular Suture]
He forced his failing lungs to inflate properly. He bound the micro-tears in his muscle tissue with invisible pressure. It was a temporary, agonizing bandage. He just needed this fragile container to survive for one more hour.
Nyx, Lucien, Cole, and Bram stood around him in the dim alleyway. They wore their dark Vanguard uniforms.
"Dawn is here," Lucien noted quietly. He checked the polished edge of his silver rapier.
"The peace summit has already started inside the main hall."
The Captain wiped a thin line of black blood from his chin with the back of his iron gauntlet.
"Estella and Lyra are in position," The Captain said. His voice was a strained, raspy whisper. "They are waiting for our signal."
Cole gripped the handle of his heavy iron hammer. He looked down the street at the towering white walls of Lord Lionel’s estate.
"The perimeter is swarming with guards," Cole reported in a hushed tone.
"If we use heavy magic to clear the front yard, the King Level Beast will sense the sudden spike in mana. It will mutate Lionel and flee before we even reach the Council doors."
"Then we do not use magic," The Captain commanded softly. He looked directly at his frontline fighters.
"Bram. Cole. You are the distraction. Break the front door. Make a massive mess. Keep every single eye on you."
Bram cracked his thick knuckles. A fierce, eager grin spread across the giant boy’s face.
"My pleasure, Captain."
The gates of Lord Lionel’s estate were massive. Two towering slabs of thick wrought iron blocked the main entrance.
A dozen elite human knights stood guard outside. They wore polished silver armor and carried heavy steel halberds.
They looked bored in the early morning fog.
THUD.
THUD.
Heavy, earth-shaking footsteps echoed down the cobblestone street. The elite guards instantly raised their halberds.
Bram walked straight out of the morning mist. He did not hold a weapon. He did not carry his massive tower shield.
"Halt!" the lead guard shouted loudly. "This estate is heavily restricted!"
Bram did not slow down. He walked directly up to the wrought-iron gates. The guards thrust their halberds forward to skewer the giant intruder.
Bram ignored the sharp blades. He reached his massive hands through the iron bars. He gripped the center of the heavy gates.
[Titan Vitality]
Bram’s muscles bulged unnaturally underneath his dark uniform. His skin hardened into thick, gray titan-stone. He planted his boots deep into the cobblestones. He took a deep breath.
He pulled backward.
SCREEECH!
The sound of bending, tearing metal pierced the quiet morning. The massive iron gates buckled under the sheer, terrifying physical strength of the giant. The heavy steel hinges groaned loudly and snapped.
CRASH!
Bram violently ripped the entire gate completely out of the stone archway. He lifted the twisted, multi-ton slabs of iron over his head and hurled them directly into the courtyard.
The heavy iron smashed into a beautiful marble fountain, sending water and debris flying high into the air.
"Intruders!" a guard screamed in pure panic.
Cole stepped up right beside Bram. The young blacksmith swung a massive, newly forged iron hammer.
SMASH!
Cole drove the hammer directly into the lead guard’s chest plate. The knight flew backward, crashing heavily into the stone wall.
"Come on!" Cole roared. He banged his hammer against the broken stonework to make as much noise as possible.
"Is that all you have?!"
The courtyard erupted into total chaos. Alarms rang out from the high guard towers.
Dozens of heavily armed knights poured out of the barracks, rushing toward the shattered front gates to swarm the two intruders.
The distraction worked flawlessly. Every single eye in the estate focused entirely on Bram and Cole.
The Captain, Nyx, and Lucien slipped seamlessly over the eastern garden wall. They moved through the pristine hedges like ghosts.
"Keep the Captain safe," Lucien whispered.
"I have the left flank," Nyx replied. She drew her obsidian daggers from her belt.
They ran silently across the manicured lawns. A squad of five elite guards suddenly stepped out from a side entrance, blocking the garden path.
The guards saw the three infiltrators. The corrupted knights did not draw their swords. They opened their mouths and let out a sickening, gurgling hiss.
Their silver armor warped. Thick, oily black veins pulsed aggressively across their necks. Their arms violently mutated, stretching and snapping with sickening wet sounds.
The flesh and bone of their forearms elongated, transforming into massive, jagged shadowy blades.
They were fully infected by the Treachery-Fiends.
"They are mutating," Lucien observed calmly.
Lucien darted forward. He did not cast a massive lightning storm. He condensed his mana, keeping his energy signature incredibly low and tight to avoid detection.
He slipped gracefully under the sweeping strike of a shadowy blade. He stepped directly inside the corrupted guard’s reach.
[Volt Sting]
Lucien thrust his rapier. A tiny, concentrated spark of blue lightning pierced the guard’s throat. The electric current fried the parasite attached to the brainstem instantly. The guard collapsed silently into the dirt.
Two more mutated knights lunged at The Captain. Their elongated blade-arms swung rapidly toward his neck.
The Captain did not raise his hands. He conserved his failing strength.
Nyx melted out of the shadows beneath the knights. She rose up, driving both of her daggers straight into the narrow gaps of their armor.
SQUELCH.
The dark poison on her blades paralyzed the corrupted hosts instantly. Nyx twisted her wrists, dropping the two monsters into the flowerbeds before they could even scream.
"Keep moving," Nyx said.
They left the roaring chaos of Bram and Cole behind them. The thunderous sounds of shattering stone and shouting guards provided the perfect auditory cover.
Draven, Nyx, and Lucien slipped seamlessly through the ruined gardens. They reached the grand, elevated porch of the main estate. They entered the opulent hallways.
The corridors were completely empty. Every single guard had rushed outside to fight the giant currently tearing their courtyard apart.
The Captain walked down the plush velvet carpet of the interior hallway. He clutched his side, fighting a fresh wave of agony radiating from his fractured ribs. He forced himself to walk perfectly straight.
They arrived at a set of towering, intricately carved wooden doors. This was the Council of Harmony.
Muffled voices echoed loudly from the other side of the thick wood.
"The Elves have broken their treaty!" Lord Lionel shouted from inside the chamber. His voice dripped with fake, righteous fury.
"They freed the assassin! They mock our justice! We must march on the canopy today!"
"You have no proof of Elven involvement!" a melodic, furious Elven voice argued back. "This is a setup!"
"My ambassador is dead!" Forge-King Thorgar bellowed. His deep voice vibrated heavily through the wooden doors.
"I will not let this insult pass! The siege engines are ready!"
The summit was falling apart exactly as Lionel planned. The civil war was mere minutes away from becoming official.
Draven stood in front of the heavy doors. He reached into his heavy leather pouch. He pulled out the reinforced glass jar.
Inside the glass, the captured Treachery-Fiend thrashed wildly. The dark smoke slammed against the runic seals, shrieking in silent agony.
Draven looked at Nyx and Lucien. He gave a sharp, single nod.
He did not utter a commanding phrase. He did not issue a loud battle cry. The element of surprise was far more valuable than words.
Outside, the booming noise of Bram smashing a marble statue acted as the perfect camouflage.
Nyx placed her hands on the left door. Lucien placed his hands on the right.
They pushed the heavy oak doors open without making a single sound.
The three of them slipped silently into the grand summit room. The explosive distraction outside was working flawlessly.
The leaders gathered around the massive circular table were entirely focused on their bitter argument.
The Captain stepped out of the shadows. He walked calmly toward the center of the room, holding the glass jar in his hands. The time for diplomacy was over.
