Chapter 128: Chapter 128
Fresh from her bath, Lucy rolled back and forth across the bed in her dorm room.
"Waaah... How did things end up like this?"
"I finally reached the guild I’d always dreamed of joining and even met the author I admired most. Those two happy things should’ve combined into a wonderful experience straight out of a dream."
"So why...?"
"You certainly remember the lines from my books well."
"Marshall—?!"
Lucy shot upright.
"How did you get in here?! And why are you floating around like a ghost?!"
Marshall hovered in the middle of the room with an innocent smile and shrugged.
"When I helped move your belongings yesterday, I left a spatial marker in your room."
"I needed to speak with you, so I teleported straight here."
"Convenient, isn’t it?"
"Convenient, my ass!"
Lucy pointed accusingly at him.
"This is trespassing! Why would you leave a marker inside someone else’s home without permission?!"
"Because you haven’t become a full member yet."
Marshall explained it as though this were perfectly reasonable.
"Once you do, I can place the marker on your guild emblem instead. Then I won’t need the one inside your room."
"That isn’t the point!"
Lucy’s voice rose another octave.
"You have no sense of boundaries at all! This is my private room!"
"You’re breaking into someone’s home!"
After exhausting herself shouting, Lucy collapsed facedown across the bed.
This wasn’t merely a problem with personal space.
Why did everything that happened after joining Fairy Tail differ so wildly from what she had imagined?
"Don’t be angry, Lucy."
"What do you mean, don’t be angry?"
She buried her face in a pillow.
"Get out first!"
"I actually came because I need to ask Lucy-nee for a favor."
Marshall sounded unusually hesitant.
"It feels rather embarrassing to ask someone for help, so I hope you won’t mind."
For reasons Lucy couldn’t explain, hearing him call her "Lucy-nee" made her heart flutter.
It had never affected her like this before.
Could it be because she had somehow ended up joining the future-girlfriend faction?
But she had only chosen that group out of curiosity!
Besides, according to what she’d heard, its membership consisted of three burly men and that terrifying vice-guild-master-like woman.
It wasn’t as though there were any genuine romantic rivals inside!
Lucy’s face reddened.
"I-Is that so?"
"Then I suppose it can’t be helped."
"What do you need assistance with? As long as it’s something I can do, your big sister won’t refuse..."
Marshall’s lips curved upward.
The fish had taken the bait.
"You haven’t completed any guild requests yet, have you?"
"Reserve members are allowed to accept certain jobs, but the best requests are generally reserved for full members."
He produced a sheet of parchment.
"I happen to have an easy, well-paying job that’s perfectly suited to you."
"The reward is two million Jewels."
"Would you like to form a team with me and complete it together?"
"I’m in!"
The moment Lucy heard two million Jewels, her eyes practically transformed into gold coins.
She wasn’t exactly short on money.
When she ran away from home, she had taken along all the allowance she had saved over the years—several tens of millions of Jewels.
But this would be the first time she earned money through her own abilities!
"Oh?"
Marshall tilted his head.
"You don’t want to think it over first?"
"Once you agree, you won’t be allowed to change your mind~"
"There’s nothing to consider!"
Lucy sat up straight.
"I accept!"
Money had completely overwhelmed her judgment.
She failed to notice Marshall’s mischievous smile.
This wasn’t merely a trap.
It was a bottomless pit, and Marshall had every intention of pushing her straight into it.
"You agreed awfully quickly."
He nodded with satisfaction.
"Since Lucy has already decided, I’ll go make the preparations."
"See you tomorrow."
"Mm-hmm! No problem!"
Marshall was about to leave when he appeared to remember something.
He handed Lucy the request sheet.
"One more thing."
"Our job is to retrieve a particular book from Duke Everlue’s mansion."
"To infiltrate the estate, you may need to apply for a position as one of his maids."
"I prepared an outfit for you in advance."
He placed a frilly maid uniform beside her.
"Practice playing the role tonight. I’ll inspect your performance tomorrow."
"That should be everything."
"See you later~"
Marshall gave her a playful salute.
"(∠・ω<)★"
Then he vanished.
Lucy stared blankly at the request sheet in her hands and the maid outfit lying beside her.
"Wait..."
"No, hold on."
"Isn’t something wrong here?!"
Why did she suddenly feel as though she’d been tricked?
Could it be...
Had Marshall deliberately set her up?
Lucy looked down at the request again and nearly burst into tears.
It was too late to back out now.
Her hellish training as an undercover maid was about to begin!
...
As the self-proclaimed god of information, Marshall could estimate someone’s basic physical measurements with a glance.
Ever since his Telepathy Magic evolved into Information Magic, he had never stopped exploring its potential.
His System could quantify his own fundamental attributes, which naturally raised another question:
Could he develop a spell capable of measuring someone else’s basic statistics?
In theory, it was entirely possible.
He might even create an Appraisal Spell connected directly to Super Archive’s knowledge database.
If he succeeded, the research alone could probably earn him several top-level academic papers.
Unfortunately, Marshall lacked the time to develop it fully.
So far, he had only created a spell capable of measuring another Mage’s total magic power.
Using it, he had finally calculated Makarov’s reserves.
Eight hundred and seventy-eight thousand units.
Nearly ten times Marshall’s own.
No wonder he had never been able to perceive the true extent of Makarov’s magic power before.
The gap between them was simply too great!
A Mage of Makarov’s level remained far beyond what Marshall could currently challenge.
He was still young, while the old man had spent decades reaching his present heights.
Marshall also wanted to create a wearable magic-power scanner similar to the devices in Dragon Ball.
If manufactured successfully, it would probably sell extremely well.
But all of those projects required time.
For now, Marshall was far more interested in his upcoming "journey" with Lucy.
Thinking about it carefully, Lucy really was a good person.
Despite being born into one of Fiore’s wealthiest families, she had none of the arrogance expected from a spoiled heiress.
She was good-tempered, knew how to take a joke, and quickly forgot minor grievances instead of plotting revenge.
That made teasing her remarkably entertaining.
"Hehehe..."
Marshall smiled to himself.
Tomorrow’s quest was going to be very enjoyable!
