Chapter 139: Chapter 139

The Eisenwald incident caused quite a stir afterward.

During their trial, the captured members confessed that their real plan had been to attack the Guild Masters gathered in Clover Town.

Naturally, that revelation left the leaders of the legitimate guilds both furious and more than a little unsettled.

Once all of Eisenwald had been imprisoned, attention quickly shifted toward Oración Seis.

Eisenwald had operated as one of the dark guilds under its influence, so plenty of Guild Masters quietly added Oración Seis to their list of organizations worth watching.

Sorcerer Weekly naturally wanted to turn the entire incident into a major story and tried repeatedly to interview Marshall, while reporters from other publications swarmed Magnolia as well.

Several days had already passed since the station incident, yet Fairy Tail remained packed with visitors.

People had even traveled in from other towns just to buy guild merchandise.

Headlines such as—

[FAIRY TAIL SAVES THE DAY AND FOILS DARK GUILD PLOT! MAGIC COUNCIL ARRIVES TOO LATE TO BE OF ANY USE!]

—appeared one after another, doing absolutely nothing for social harmony and stability.

Marshall’s response was simple.

What did any of that have to do with him?

If the Magic Council was bad at its job, were people suddenly forbidden from saying so?

Still, Marshall had little interest in such trivial matters.

What occupied most of his attention now was his research into Lullaby...

And, of course, the promised maid days from Erza and Lucy.

...

The day after the Eisenwald incident ended, Lucy changed into her maid uniform and reported to Marshall’s home as promised.

She already knew Marshall had built a huge residence beside the river, but this was the first time she had ever visited it personally.

When she arrived outside Little Garden, she stopped dead.

In front of her stood a bizarre building dozens of meters tall and more than ten stories high.

The uppermost floors had been decorated to resemble an enormous cake, complete with several "candles" sticking out from the top.

Looking more closely, Lucy realized the candles were actually rotating magical lights.

Below the cake-like section were neat rows of glass-walled floors that looked more like a modern office building than someone’s home.

Marshall called the building Cake Tower.

Lucy had to admit the name was extremely literal.

She initially looked around for a doorbell, but the moment she approached the gate, it opened automatically.

Lucy poked her head through.

"Hello?"

No one came to greet her.

Maybe whatever access identification she carried had automatically unlocked the entrance?

"Is anyone home? Marshall? I’m coming in~"

There was still a small garden inside the grounds, filled with flowers and carefully maintained greenery.

Several tiny penguin gardeners were hard at work among the flowerbeds.

Lucy stopped.

Wait.

Penguin gardeners?

She walked closer and discovered that the two-head-tall creatures, none of them even reaching her knees, had tiny faces that strongly resembled a short-haired Mira!

"Gugu-gaga?"

The Gugas looked up at Lucy for a moment before expressionlessly returning to trimming the plants.

"Uh... so these are Gugas?"

Lucy crouched slightly.

"They’re actually pretty cute."

She had heard that Marshall had created some kind of strange magical pet.

There were even rumors that Gugas occasionally appeared around the women’s dormitory.

Unfortunately, Lucy had never encountered one before.

Today was her first time seeing them in person.

Since the Gugas clearly had no intention of entertaining her, Lucy continued into Cake Tower.

At last, she found someone waiting for her.

A pink-haired maid stood inside.

"Welcome, Miss Lucy."

The woman bowed elegantly.

"I am Virgo, Little Master’s Celestial Spirit. I oversee most matters concerning his daily life."

"For today, I will also serve as your maid instructor."

"I look forward to working with you."

Lucy’s eyes lit up.

"Ohhh! I know you!"

"The Celestial Spirit of Virgo!"

"I finally get to meet you!"

Lucy nearly cried from envy.

"Marshall is so lucky! I want Virgo’s golden key too!"

Virgo tilted her head.

"I often hear Aquarius making certain comments about you in the Celestial Spirit World. She says—"

"STOP!"

Lucy immediately threw up both hands.

"Don’t tell me! I don’t want to know!"

"As you wish."

Virgo remained perfectly composed.

"Then I will begin instructing Miss Lucy in the duties of a maid."

"Are you prepared?"

"T-Training?"

Lucy hesitated.

"All right. I’m ready."

Then she looked around.

"By the way, where’s Erza? She said she was coming today too."

"Miss Erza is currently inside Little Master’s laboratory."

Virgo answered without hesitation.

"Little Master specifically instructed me not to allow Miss Lucy to disturb his happy time with her, so he assigned me to supervise your maid training instead."

Lucy stared at her.

"???"

’What does that mean?!’

’Was I rejected?!’

Lucy got angry.

For roughly two seconds.

Then she thought about it again.

Actually, perhaps this was a good thing.

Maybe Marshall simply didn’t want her to feel awkward, so he had arranged for Virgo to help her familiarize herself with the house first.

Yes.

That made sense.

Lucy quickly found a comforting explanation and became enthusiastic again.

She had already spent half a day pretending to be Marshall’s maid during their previous request, but she hadn’t really experienced proper maid work.

For an heiress like Lucy, getting to play at living the servant life was actually rather novel.

"All right!"

She rolled up her sleeves.

"What do I do first?"

"Cleaning?"

"Leave it to me!"

"That will not be necessary."

Virgo calmly crushed her enthusiasm.

"Most cleaning throughout the residence is handled by the Gugas. Maids are generally not required to perform routine cleaning."

"Instead, I will first familiarize you with the layout of the house."

"There are many floors, and each serves a different purpose. Consequently, there are quite a few rules to remember."

"Since this is Miss Lucy’s first visit, allow me to provide a tour."

"Oh!"

Lucy nodded eagerly.

"Sure! Thank you!"

So being Marshall’s maid basically meant getting invited over to tour his house?

’Honestly, Marshall probably just wanted an excuse to become better friends with me.’

’He really isn’t straightforward at all.’

Lucy followed Virgo with a cheerful smile.

"The first and second floors contain the main reception areas," Virgo explained as they walked.

"They are generally used to entertain ordinary guests."

"In addition to an indoor training room, there are several rooms dedicated to entertainment and relaxation."

"The third floor contains the kitchen, cold-storage rooms, and dining areas. A wide variety of food and drinks are kept there at all times."

Virgo paused.

"Miss Cana frequently attempts to steal alcohol from storage."

"This is something a maid should remain vigilant about. Please remember it."

Lucy nodded solemnly.

"Got it."

"Cooking is usually handled by either myself or Ruby. Miss Mira occasionally assists us."

Virgo glanced at Lucy.

"Can you cook, Miss Lucy?"

"Uh... a little?"

"Then I will not assign you kitchen duties."

"...Okay."

"Let us continue."

They moved upward.

"The fourth floor is the library."

Lucy stared at row after row of bookshelves.

"There are a great many books here. Most were specifically collected by Miss Levy and Little Master."

"Little Master occasionally works or thinks here, while Miss Levy frequently comes here to relax."

"Levy?!"

Lucy suddenly understood something.

"Wait! She told me she was going to read before, and then I couldn’t find her anywhere in the guild!"

Virgo continued without reacting.

"The fifth and sixth floors contain Little Master’s magical-device laboratories."

"Many of Miss Erza’s weapons and armor are also stored on the sixth floor."

"She insists on maintaining them personally and refuses assistance from the maids."

"Please remember that."

"Uh..."

Lucy nodded.

"That explains why Erza didn’t object at all when Marshall asked her to be a maid."

"The seventh floor is the wardrobe level as well as one of Little Master’s enchantment laboratories."

"Miss Juvia visits that floor frequently. She has a private sewing room there and does not permit maids to enter."

"This should also be remembered."

"All right..."

"The eighth floor is the Information Room."

Virgo stopped before a secured entrance.

"Little Master forbids ordinary guests from entering without authorization."

"Although Miss Lucy is serving as a maid today, you do not possess sufficient access privileges and therefore may not enter."

"Please remember this as well."

Lucy peered curiously at the door.

"Then who can go inside?"

"Anyone specifically authorized by Little Master."

Virgo thought briefly.

"Very few people visit regularly. Miss Mira and Miss Laki are among the more frequent users."

"Oh..."

They continued upward.

"The ninth floor contains Little Master’s bedroom."

"Miss Cana also lives on this floor."

Lucy fell silent.

"..."

"The tenth through twelfth floors consist primarily of laboratories. Many rooms contain unfinished experiments."

"Little Master and Miss Erza are presently on the eleventh floor."

Virgo continued leading her through the building.

"This is the Super Archive Chamber."

"And this floor is..."

Then another...

And another...

The longer the tour continued, the stranger Lucy’s expression became.

This was supposedly Marshall’s house.

So why were there traces of other girls absolutely everywhere?

Why did so many rules begin with someone else’s name?

"Because Cana wanted a hot spring, Little Master added another floor and converted part of it into pools and bathing facilities."

’What?’

"Because Erza wanted additional space to store casual clothing, Little Master added another floor and incorporated it into his clothing-enchantment research area."

’Excuse me?’

"Because Mira wanted an easier way to communicate with another world, Little Master added another research floor dedicated to interdimensional communications."

And those weren’t isolated examples.

Floor after floor had apparently been added because one girl or another wanted something.

Even Wendy had her own dedicated teleportation room here.

Lucy finally understood why Cake Tower had kept getting taller.

Being a maid in this house was much harder than she had expected.

There were far too many rules!

And once Lucy began examining the situation from a maid’s perspective, she discovered an even more serious problem.

Marshall was incredibly close to far too many girls in the guild.

’Wait...’

’Is he going to grow up into a huge womanizer?’

Then another thought occurred to her.

’No, hold on.’

’His house is already filled with traces of other girls everywhere.’

’Will he even be able to find a girlfriend in the future?’

That didn’t sound right either.

Far too many girls already liked Marshall.

Whoever eventually dated him would probably have no choice but to accept at least some of this.

But what if his future girlfriend demanded that all these traces of the other girls be removed?

Wouldn’t that start a war?!

A full-scale war!

Love is war indeed!

Lucy shuddered.

Then a completely unnecessary thought slipped into her mind.

’Although... if I wanted to live here too, he could always just add another floor.’

She froze.

’No, no, no!’

’WHY AM I EVEN THINKING ABOUT THAT?!’

Lucy’s thoughts descended into complete chaos.
