Chapter 55: Chapter 55
Wendy joined Fairy Tail.
The guild’s shameless adults celebrated so loudly that the entire building seemed to shake.
Wendy’s soft, gentle personality felt almost completely out of place in Fairy Tail.
Most of the guild’s recent young recruits had been walking disasters like Natsu and Mira, so when an adorable, well-behaved little girl finally joined, the adults nearly lost their minds with excitement!
The last child to enter the guild at such a young age had been Marshall.
At Roubaul’s request, Marshall became Wendy’s official guardian.
Admittedly, having a guardian only two years older than her sounded rather strange, but Marshall had accepted payment for the job.
Keeping his word was one of the few virtues he proudly claimed to possess.
As for the payment...
Marshall had no need for money, and Cait Shelter possessed no valuable treasures, so Roubaul gave him a book containing his personal insights into Soul Magic.
Marshall hadn’t thought much of it at first.
Then he noticed that the experience bar for Soul Magic LV3 rose rapidly whenever he read it, and he immediately accepted the book without another word.
Reading advanced magical texts could accelerate the growth of related skills.
That was one of the reasons Marshall loved books, but he had never encountered one that granted experience this quickly.
It inspired him to begin collecting more rare magical texts.
Perhaps he could find other precious "experience books" like this one.
Since Marshall had accepted Roubaul’s payment, he naturally had to fulfill the request properly.
He and Cana temporarily suspended their Magical Beast hunting over the next few days so they could help Wendy settle into her new home and adjust to life in Magnolia.
Cana had appointed herself the older sister of both children.
Since she had grown up in a church and claimed to possess extensive "child-rearing experience," she personally supervised every detail of Wendy’s new home.
Wendy moved into Fairy Tail’s girls’ dormitory.
As for where the rent came from...
Naturally, her "father" Roubaul paid for it.
He gave Wendy all the money Cait Shelter no longer needed, enough for her to live comfortably for several years without accepting a single job.
In truth, Wendy didn’t need to take jobs yet anyway.
Her immediate priority was training and becoming stronger, especially learning to control her Sky Dragon Slayer Magic properly.
Natsu’s Dragon Slayer Magic was roughly composed of:
[Fire Magic LV3]
[Attribute Conversion Magic LV1]
[Enchantment Magic LV1]
[Dragon Power LV2]
Wendy, despite also being a Dragon Slayer, possessed only Level One skills across the board.
There was a six-year age difference between them, and the difference in experience was considerable.
Fairy Tail was filled with loud, outgoing personalities, so Wendy often escaped to the reading group, where the atmosphere was calmer.
She quickly became Marshall’s little shadow.
Ruby, rather embarrassingly, became Carla’s shadow.
Happy suffered an even greater humiliation by becoming the cat neither of them wanted around.
As a result, the guildhall now had three cats constantly chasing, avoiding, and searching for one another.
An already noisy guild became even livelier.
"Marshall-nii, when are you going to start learning Sky Magic?"
Wendy was deeply grateful for everything Marshall had done and desperately wanted to repay him somehow.
She was even more enthusiastic about teaching than he was about learning.
Marshall lowered the "experience book" in his hands and released a long sigh.
A sweet little girl who called everyone "big brother" and "big sister" had arrived in the guild!
He had finally met his match.
Wendy’s behavior was almost identical to how Marshall had acted when he first joined Fairy Tail.
With her adorable appearance and sweet voice, she had effortlessly won the affection of everyone in the guild.
The difference was that Marshall had deliberately acted cute for his own wicked amusement.
Wendy was genuinely adorable.
She wasn’t performing at all. That was simply what she was like.
No one else could see any meaningful difference, but Marshall still felt as though he had somehow lost.
It appeared he would need a new role within the guild.
He would surrender the position of resident adorable child to Wendy.
"I’ll learn it. Of course I’ll learn it!"
Marshall closed the book.
"I might have more things to do every day now, but studying magic is still the most important. I can’t allow that to fall behind."
Marshall’s daily schedule had become increasingly crowded.
He practiced close combat with Erza, read with Levy, hunted Magical Beasts with Cana, and played pranks with Mira.
Now he also needed to study magic with Wendy.
He was beginning to run out of time.
But Marshall intended to become a true master of time management.
A minor inconvenience like this would never defeat him.
He grabbed Wendy and teleported with her to the small white laboratory in the forest.
Carla, who had been distracted by Ruby, stared blankly at the empty space before jumping up in alarm.
"Hey! Take me with you!"
...
Marshall immediately began the lesson.
"Wendy, use Sky Magic on me first."
"O-Okay! I can currently increase attack and defense. It works like this—"
Wendy waved one small hand.
Marshall immediately felt a thin magical "layer" settle over his body.
The sensation was extremely familiar.
"This is... Enchantment Magic?"
"Huh? Marshall-nii knows Enchantment Magic too?"
Wendy looked surprised.
"I enchant a person’s body with the sky attribute to improve their abilities..."
"Theoretically, every Dragon Slayer uses Enchantment Magic," Marshall explained. "Most of them simply don’t realize it."
He studied the magic surrounding his body.
"But it seems you’re especially talented with it."
"Sky attribute... Wendy, don’t use Enchantment Magic this time. Let me experience the effects of pure Sky Magic."
"Um... How do I separate them?"
Wendy fidgeted.
"I can usually only use Sky Magic by itself when I’m healing injuries."
"That’s easy."
Marshall deactivated the Heal script in his Body-Conditioning Magic.
Within moments, controlled damage began spreading throughout his muscles, leaving him covered in small injuries.
He clenched his teeth against the pain.
"Wendy, try healing me now."
"Huh?! O-Okay!"
Wendy placed both hands against Marshall.
A soft glow shone from her palms.
Marshall felt a gentle energy flow into his body, repairing his injuries.
It was different from vitality.
This power was milder, purer, and somehow more complete.
"This is magic power with an entirely unique attribute."
Marshall’s voice became increasingly excited.
"Magic that naturally possesses healing and restorative properties... So this is where the missing part of the light attribute was hiding."
He muttered rapidly to himself as his expression brightened.
The moment he identified the unfamiliar form of magic power, his System reacted.
After investing Inspiration and unlocking Sky Magic LV1, Marshall gradually understood what he was sensing.
Based on his old assumptions about fantasy worlds, light elements should naturally possess healing properties.
"Holy Light Healing" was practically the most obvious application of Light Magic imaginable.
Yet when Marshall learned Light Magic in this world, he discovered that light possessed no natural healing characteristic.
The disappointment had stayed with him for a long time.
Now, however, everything suddenly made sense.
The missing aspect of "light" had been hidden within Sky Magic all along.
Marshall felt that sky-attribute magic power could be understood as a kind of positive energy.
It resembled life energy without being exactly the same.
Its natural characteristics included healing and restoration, and when applied to a living body, it provided a far more complete enhancement than ordinary magic reinforcement.
Wasn’t this essentially the exclusive power set of a priest?
Could the loss of this "positive energy" be the reason Healing Magic had vanished from the world?
Marshall’s Inspiration surged as he formed a bold theory.
Perhaps Sky Magic had once been one of the core techniques used by the old churches.
Then the "gods" disappeared.
Without divine beings, priests could no longer make effective use of this positive energy, causing true Healing Magic to gradually vanish.
The more he thought about it, the more reasonable it sounded.
He couldn’t understand why this positive energy was supposedly so difficult to control, though.
He had learned it almost immediately.
More importantly... how had the gods of this world disappeared in the first place?
The only other beings that seemed to have suffered a similar fate were dragons.
Dragon Slayer Magic...
Marshall smiled.
The magic of this world was becoming more interesting by the day!
