Angel

"What are you doing here, Angel?" Oh, she has the audacity to ask me questions when she knows exactly why I am here..

Madam stood there in her long designer coat, her back straight as an arrow, watching me through those dark reflective lenses.

"What is the meaning of this?" The words burned my throat as I forced them through my teeth, my fist squeezing so tight my nails dug into my palm.

"I’m sure those eyes of yours are good... you can see for yourself..." She didn’t even tilt her head, her voice as dry as dusty concrete.

"Their company sells a drug that is not good.. it’s a harmful substance... even you told them not to set foot on this land.." I pointed my fingers at her despicable face..

I stepped right into her personal space, ignoring the heavy rumble of the excavator idling just ten feet away.

She just stood there with her hands resting casually inside her coat pockets.

She doesn’t even look bothered... and I hate her for this..

"The medical team has tested the drug and it is positive... Goodland will be distributing drugs here in the district and if you want to threaten me with your mother’s name, she has to attest to it... she even signed the papers herself.."

"That’s a lie, I am sure it never got to her.. she cares about the people of this district more than her own life... she will never do something so reckless for money.."

That is right, my mother can be many things, but when it comes to this place, she is always careful.

"Angel, go find something useful to do.. or find an omega to vent on... don’t interfere in this business... you have no concerns here... perhaps you should join hands with Abigail and arrange for your mother’s wedding anniversary...."

She turned her shoulder toward me, completely brushing me off like I was nothing more than a stray dog barking at her heels.

"You are a mean bitch.." I sneered... feeling insulted by her once again.. The air around us felt thick and suffocating, my heart hammering against my ribs in pure, helpless anger.

"And you are a childish one.... By the way, how is April... I can’t wait for your Mom to find out that the girl you are supposed to take care of as a little sister has now turned into one of your sex products...."

Her lips curled up into a faint, nasty smile right at the corner of her mouth. Looking at this hag makes my stomach turn.. I just left her and the construction site..

Trying to find a way to calm my mind, I joined Carlos and Sabrina in the field, helping them harvest their tomatoes..

The air down on the farm smelled completely different, rich with the scent of damp earth, crushed vine leaves, and fresh water.

I wore a raincoat and boots before entering the muddy land..

"The peaceful life of a farmer... who is about to become a mother.." Sabrina called out, wiping sweat from her forehead with the back of her gloved hand, smiling like she was having diamond....

"And a father.." Carlos said to his twin sister.. He was crouching three plants down, his blonde hair tied back as he carefully snipped a heavy cluster of red fruit from the stem.

"Yes, yes, yes... we are going to be parents in a few months’ time..."

"Huff.. old people.." Hearing her say such foreign words made my eyes bored and tired..

"Call us what you want.. I’m in a good mood, so I won’t level your insults.." Sabrina glared.. She tossed a firm red tomato into her woven basket with a soft thud, giving me a sharp side-eye.

No wonder I never mingle with her, it is always Carlos that is easy to be friends with.. this one is just the extra I got because I befriended the brother..

Buy one, get one free.. but the free one is a pain in the neck....

"You are going to have wrinkles within a month of being a parent.." I muttered, bending down to grab a round fruit from the thick foliage near my knees.

"Keep going, Angel.... And stop harvesting the green tomato.. does that look ripe to you.." Sabrina barked, her voice snapping across the row before my hand could even drop the fruit into my basket.

Looking at the green tomato.. realizing I have been plucking the wrong fruit.. I stared down at the hard, pale ball sitting in my dirty palm, my shoulders dropping an inch.

"Well, people do eat green tomatoes.." I said, tossing it inside the basket..

"If no one buys this in the market, you are eating this yourself..."

"I hate you.." I spat out..

"I hate you more.. come on, the sun is coming down and my baby will be back soon, so let’s make this less talk, more working.."

She bent back over her row, her hands moving with fast, practiced efficiency through the thick green leaves.

So with the help of other workers, we were able to harvest 20 large baskets, enough to distribute to the market.. The baskets lined the edge of the dirt path, stacked high with bright red produce, their sweet smell filling the air as the afternoon heat began to cool down.

Back in Mexico, the Martínez family deals in Agriculture and Farming.... and the twins bought lands here to farm and rear animals.. despite being wealthy from it, they still join the workers and help with the work..

That is how much they love their business.. it’s a family kind of business..

I don’t usually do all this, but because of the deal I made with April.. I have to keep myself busy and working just to not have that thought...

Don’t want to give her a reason to deprived me of what I love most..

Also those Omegas can’t find me here..

And for the Goodland business, I’m not going to do anything.. I already see trouble, and this will get Madam to lose her status here in the district..

It will be a good thing, watching the woman I hate fall to the ground and also a bad thing because the people who are going to be affected by the substance are the people of the district..
