April

I opened my eyes to crimson eyes staring right back at me, wide open.

My sleepy eyes widened. All I did was stare back at her like it was a intense staring competition.

We kept on staring and staring until I realized it was getting dumber by the second.

"Why are you staring at me like that?" I asked, still staring right into her face.

"Where were you last?" Angel asked, her voice low and raspy from sleep. "I thought you went home, and then I woke up and you are right here."

"Did you want me to go home last night?"

"No, but when I returned from the park, you weren’t here, and I assumed you left because of what I said."

"I did not leave," I said, finally ending the staring contest and sitting up. "Your other mommy had a long discussion with me."

My eyes searched the bed for Terror, finding her roaming around near the corner.

"Madam?" Angel guessed right on her first try.

So she actually considered her as a mom, or what?

"How did you know I was referring to her?" I asked, swinging my legs over the edge of the mattress.

"Because this whole place reeked of her last night, despite the fact that this is an open place," Angel grumbled, pushing herself up against the pillows. "Even the wind can’t wash away her devilish scent."

Wrong. She was still saying bad words about her.

I stood up, located my glasses on the small side table, and slid them onto my face.

I walked over and gently touched Terror, who seemed much more gentle toward me now and had stopped acting like a rabid dog every time I breathed near her. The cat was really hard to mingle with at first, but then a month ago, Angel left me alone with her at the mansion for a few hours, and we kind of connected. Such a cute furry creature, even if she was still territorial sometimes.

I know she is still jelly about my closeness to Angel, but she is trying...

"So what did she say to you?" Angel asked, sitting up fully on the bed now.

I picked up the cat, carrying her back to the bed and setting her down on the soft sheets. Then I looked straight at Angel before telling her the absolute truth.

I’m really not the kind of person to beat around the bush and hold secrets that might affect what we have going on.

"She said she wants me to help convince you to start swimming again, and also leave the district for good."

Angel’s eyes locked onto mine. "And what did you say?"

"I said no," I answered plainly. "I don’t want to force you to do what you don’t want to do. You will do it on your own terms."

Angel stayed quiet for a second, then wiped her face with her palms. "Okay, should we go down and take a bath? But I intend to go to the gym first, then the bathroom."

Okay, that was definitely not what I was expecting to hear from her. She was clearly trying to skip the entire topic.

Should I ask further, or just pretend to skip it too?

Maybe she just wasn’t ready to talk about it yet.

But I really wanted to tell her that I had no idea about how her mother died, and that I was available if she ever wanted to talk about it to someone.

I decided I should just tell her directly.

"Angel, I don’t know how you felt about your mom," I said with total sincerity, keeping my voice gentle so she wouldn’t get mad. "But I am here if you want to talk to someone about it. I’m going to listen and lend my shoulder to you."

Angel paused, her expression softening. She smiled at me softly and nodded her head.

"Okay," she murmured, her voice warm. "I will have that in my mind. So, the gym or the bathroom?"

"Gym," I chose.

"Okay, then I will give you one of my tracksuits and watch you put it on slowly, because we did not have sex last night and also this morning," Angel complained, standing up from the bed with a sharp pout. "Seriously, April, you are falling behind."

"You woke up first, you should have started," I muttered, crossing my arms.

"I don’t do it in front of my Coco," Angel argued, gesturing toward the cat. "This is also Coco’s safe zone."

"Fine, I will make it up to you and you can do whatever you want today with me," I relented, following her toward the closet. "It’s a good thing I don’t have work today."

"Good, because I plan on punishing you today for falling behind," Angel said, a smirk returning to her lips.

Then she pointed a strict finger at the cat, who was barely awake on the bed. "And also you, Coco. You are going to the gym with me and working on the treadmill. You are getting fatter by the day."

"No, she is not," I said immediately, stepping in to defend the cat. "Stop body-shaming her."

Angel turned her head and shot me a look. "Says the girl who calls her friends fat for being pregnant."

Okay, now I genuinely felt like a complete hypocrite.

I turned my head and stared closely at the orange cat on the blanket, and a sudden thought hit me.

"What if she’s getting fat because she is actually pregnant?" I said, moving closer to inspect her. "That would make complete sense, because it’s only recently she has been gaining weight like this."

Angel froze in her tracks. She slowly turned around and stared at the cat on the bed, lowering her head downward to examine the cat’s widening belly.

"She can’t be pregnant," Angel said flatly, shaking her head.

"Why? Is she a guy?" I asked.

"No," Angel said, her jaw tightening. "Coco is a vegetarian. She does not do that..."

"Vege-what now?" I stopped, needing to make sure if she was talking about the same meat-loving cat who loves eating heavy protein every single day.

I mean her best food is tuna..

"Virgin!" Angel corrected quickly, waving her hands in the air. "I meant to say virgin! My baby is as holy as a fresh monk!"

All I could do was sit there and stare at the Alpha, looking completely confused.

What the actual fuck?

The notorious playgirl Angel was currently showing the intense, defensive attributes of a purity-obsessed parent.

Wow.
