Falling For The True Heiress

Chapter 31: Are Your Parents Sick?

The door opened and Mr. Clifford walked in with Mrs. Chloe.

Mrs. Chloe was carrying several takeaway food containers while Mr. Clifford held a basket filled with fresh apples and bottled juice.

"Stop."

My voice echoed through the room before either of them could take another step.

Everyone turned to look at me.

Mom.

Sylvia.

Camila.

Daniela.

Even the doctor paused and looked at me. But I didn’t care.

I slowly walked towards them with my arms crossed against my chest.

I stopped in front of them and looked at Mrs. Chloe. And then at Mr. Clifford, before lowering my eyes to the takeaway bags and fruit basket.

I reached out and took the takeaway bags from Mrs. Chloe’s hands without saying anything. She looked at me in confusion but didn’t stop me.

I turned around and walked straight toward the trash bin at the corner of the room.

The room fell completely silent.

I stopped in front of it. Then I slowly turned around and looked at everyone again.

Mom looked confused. Sylvia was quietly watching me. Mrs. Chloe looked shocked. My eyes finally stopped on Mr. Clifford.

A small smirk played on my lips. Without saying another word...

I loosened my grip.

The takeaway bags slipped from my fingers.

Thud.

They landed inside the trash bin. I dusted my hands together as though I had just touched something dirty.

"From now onward," I said calmly, "don’t buy takeaway food for my family anymore."

Nobody said anything. I looked straight at Mr. Clifford.

"If anyone is bringing food for my dad..."

"It should be prepared at home."

"And if it isn’t..."

I glanced at the trash bin. "...then nobody is eating it."

The only sound left in the room was Dad’s heart monitor.

Beep...

Beep...

Beep...

I turned around and started walking away. After taking a few steps, I stopped.

"Mr. Clifford."

He immediately looked up. "Yes, Miss?"

"Follow me."

Without waiting for his reply, I walked out of the room.

~~~~~ Third-Person POV ~~~~~
The hospital room remained quiet after Amelia left.
Mrs. Stella Winston remained sitting where she was, still trying to understand what had just happened.
She slowly turned to Camila.
Camila was still looking towards the door Amelia had just walked through. A faint smile rested on her lips.
"Camila," Stella called softly.
Camila immediately turned to her. "Yes, Auntie?"
"Please..." Mrs. Stella’s voice softened. "Go after her."
Camila nodded. "I will." And she quietly left the room.
....
The doctor finished examining Mr. Winston, his eyes moving between the monitors and the chart in his hands.
The heart monitor continued its steady rhythm.
Beep... Beep... Beep...
He gave a satisfied nod before turning to Stella.
"Mrs. Winston," he said gently, "his vital signs are improving. That’s a good sign."
Stella let out a breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding.
"Does that mean he’ll be okay?"
The doctor offered her a reassuring smile.
"We’re cautiously optimistic. The next twenty-four hours are still critical, but for now, he’s responding well."
Tears welled in Stella’s eyes again. "Thank you, Doctor."
He nodded his head politely before leaving the room, closing the door quietly behind him.
Silence settled over the room once more. Only the soft beeping of the machines and the faint hiss of oxygen filled the air.
After a long moment, Stella turned toward Sylvia. "How are you feeling?" she asked softly.
Sylvia blinked in surprise.
Even now...
Even with her husband lying unconscious just a few feet away, Stella was still thinking about her.
Her chest tightened. Her thoughts drifted back to Amelia.
Amelia had been terrified. Her hands had trembled. Her eyes had been swollen from crying.
Yet she had still made sure Sylvia ate. She had given her medicine. She had even smiled for her.
A small, bittersweet smile touched Sylvia’s lips.
"I’m alright, Mom," she answered quietly.
Stella nodded, relieved.
Her gaze wandered back to her husband, lingering on his pale face before shifting toward Daniela, who was still standing silently near the window.
"Daniela," Stella called gently.
Daniela looked up immediately. "Come and sit down, dear."
Daniela smiled softly. "Thank you, Auntie."
She walked forward and settled into the chair beside Stella.
For a moment, no one spoke. Each of them watched the man on the hospital bed, silently praying for the same thing.
That he would open his eyes.
....
Outside, Amelia had already stopped at the end of the corridor. Mr. Clifford stood beside her.
"Where’s my father’s secretary?" Amelia asked without looking at him.
Mr. Clifford frowned slightly. "When we arrived, he was still in the eemergency department."He paused.
"But he received a call from the company."
"He said something urgent came up at the office and left on behalf of the cchairman."
Amelia’s brows drew together. "Did he leave anyone in charge?"
"No, Miss."
Before Amelia could respond—
"Is something wrong?"
Camila’s voice came from behind them.
Both Amelia and Mr. Clifford turned. Camila had caught up with them.
Amelia looked at her for a second. "I’ll explain later, Cam."
Camila simply nodded. "Okay."
Just then, an elderly woman slowly wheeled herself past them.
The small wheels squeaked softly against the tiled floor.
Amelia’s eyes followed her. She looked down at the basket of apples still in Mr. Clifford’s hands. Without saying anything, she took it from him.
"Nana," she called gently as she hurried towards the old woman.
The old woman stopped and turned around.
"Oh?"
Amelia crouched in front of her. "Nana... why are you wheeling yourself?"
The old woman smiled warmly. "Don’t worry, my daughter."
"I’m fine."
Amelia looked around the corridor. "Who’s taking care of you?"
"My son is busy with work," the old woman replied. "He comes every evening to visit me."
"My caregiver comes every morning and afternoon." She laughed. Then she lifted one thin arm and flexed it playfully.
"And besides..."
"I’m still very strong."
Amelia laughed softly. It was the first genuine laugh that had escaped her lips since hearing about her father’s accident.
Camila watched quietly from where she stood.
Even after everything. Amelia still couldn’t ignore someone who needed help.
Amelia stood up and moved behind the wheelchair, gently placing her hands on the handles.
"Come on, Nana."
"I’ll take you back to your room."
The old woman looked towards Camila and Mr. Clifford.
"What about your friends?"
Amelia smiled softly. "They’ll be fine."
Then she slowly pushed the wheelchair down the quiet hospital corridor.
"What’s your room number?" Amelia asked as she gently pushed the wheelchair down the corridor.
"Room 120," the old woman replied with a warm smile.
Amelia nodded.
"Okay."
The wheels rolled quietly over the polished floor as they made their way through the VIP wing.
Amelia glanced at each room number they passed.
116...
117...
118...
119...
"Here, dear," the old woman said, pointing toward the next room.
Amelia looked up.
Room 120.
She smiled softly. "Okay, Nana."
She pushed the wheelchair to the doorway, reached for the handle, and gently pushed the door open.
The room was quiet, with sunlight filtering through the large windows.
Amelia wheeled the old woman over to the bed before locking the wheelchair in place. She placed the basket on the bedside table.
"Here," she said softly. "Take your time."
The old woman placed both hands on the armrests and slowly tried to stand.
Amelia immediately slipped an arm around her shoulders and another around her waist, carefully supporting her weight.
"Easy..."
She slowly helped her onto the bed.
Once she was comfortably seated, Amelia adjusted the pillow behind her back before pulling the blanket over her legs.
"There," she said with a small smile. "Much better."
"Thank you, my dear," the old woman said with a gentle smile. "But I don’t even know your name."
Amelia smiled faintly. "I’m Amelia."
She reached for the glass on the bedside table, filled it with water from the jug nearby, and handed it to the old woman.
""Here,"Sshesaid.
"Thank you."
The old woman accepted it with both hands and took a few slow sips before handing the empty glass back.
Amelia took it from her and turned to place it on the small round glass table by the window.
Just as she was about to step away, the old woman’s voice stopped her.
"Are your parents sick?"
Amelia froze.
For a moment, she simply stood there with her back to the old woman.
Then she slowly lowered her gaze. A bitter smile tugged at the corner of her lips.
"If Dad was only sick..." she said quietly.
"I think I would pprobably bethe happiest person in the world right now."
She gently placed the glass on the table. The soft clink echoed through the silent room.
"I should get going now, Nana," Amelia said, turning toward the old woman. A gentle smile appeared on her face.
"And no wandering around until your caregiver comes, okay?"
The old woman chuckled. "Alright," she said, nodding obediently. "I’ll do exactly as you say."
Amelia smiled. "Good."
She turned and walked toward the door. Just as her fingers touched the doorknob, she paused.
Without looking back, she said softly,
"I’ll come visit you again."
The old woman’s wrinkled face lit up. "I’ll be waiting, my dear."
Amelia finally turned around, giving her one last smile. "Bye, Nana."
"Bye, my daughter."
Amelia gave a small wave before quietly closing the door behind her.
The smile she had worn for the old woman disappeared the moment she stepped back into the corridor.
It was time to find out who had tried to take her dad away from her.
