Falling For The True Heiress

Chapter 36: I’m Really Into Girls...

Sylvia froze.

She immediately turned to look at me. I was smiling, tilting my head from side to side as I teased her. She didn’t smile back; instead, she just stared at me.

The smile slowly disappeared from my face. Something inside Sylvia seemed to freeze every moment I teased her.

She looked at me, her eyes staring into mine as if she wanted to say something. But she didn’t say anything at all.

After a few long seconds, she lowered her gaze, gently slipped her wrist out of my hand, and stepped out of the car without saying a word, and then she walked toward the front door.

I frowned as I watched her leave. My eyes stayed on her until she disappeared into the mansion.

What was wrong with her?

She had been acting strangely since we left the hospital.

And why does it seem like she looks so sad?

I bit the inside of my cheek. Something definitely wasn’t right. I quickly got out of the car, locked it, and hurried after her.

The moment I stepped into the mansion, the familiar warmth wrapped around me. The crystal chandelier above filled the grand living room with soft golden light.

A few servants were quietly dusting the furniture while others arranged fresh flowers in large glass vases. The whole place smelled faintly of fresh lilies and furniture polish.

As I walked past them, they immediately stopped what they were doing and bowed.

"Welcome back, Miss."

I barely noticed them. My eyes kept searching the room.

Where did Sylvia go?

Maybe she was in the kitchen, licking an ice cream again.

The memory of last time when she was licking ice cream and my eyes caught the tiny smear of melted ice cream clinging to the corner of her lips after she kissed me for the first time flashed through my mind.

I couldn’t stop myself from chuckling.

"Miss, you’re back."

The sudden voice behind me made me jump. I spun around so quickly my heart nearly leaped out of my chest. I pressed a hand against it and let out a breath.

"Mrs. Chloe..." I said, breathing heavily. "You almost gave me a heart attack."

Mrs. Chloe covered her mouth with one hand and laughed softly. "I’m sorry, Miss."

I shook my head before letting out a long breath. "It’s fine," I said, looking around again.

"Have you seen Sylvia?"

Mrs. Chloe nodded immediately. "Yes, Miss. She went upstairs as soon as she came in."

Of course. She can’t sleep alone, I thought.

I nodded slowly as a small smile appeared on my lips.

"She must be in my room." I said confidently, and Mrs. Chloe looked at me curiously but didn’t ask why.

I turned back to Mrs. Chloe. "Please make something nutritious for Sylvia and bring it to my room."

Mrs. Chloe nodded. "Yes, Miss," she said.

I gave her a small nod before heading toward the staircase. As I walked away, I could still hear Mrs. Chloe chuckling softly behind me.

I pushed my bedroom door open immediately and rushed inside.

"Sylvia! "I called with a bright smile on my face.

I looked around my room, but she wasn’t anywhere. The smile on my face immediately disappeared.

I slowly walked to the sofa and sat down. I dropped both my hands on the armrest and lowered my head. I stared at the floor for a few seconds.

Why isn’t Sylvia here?

Maybe she went to take a shower. Or maybe she was changing into her pajamas.

A smile immediately appeared on my face. "But I like it more when she wears my clothes," I chuckled softly. "She looks really cute in them."

I laughed quietly before getting to my feet. "I should freshen up too."

Warm water washed away the exhaustion that had settled over me all day. A few minutes later, I stepped back into my room with a towel wrapped around my body.

The first place I looked was my bed. A small frown crept onto my face. She’s taking longer than usual.

She’s still not here yet?

I changed into my Minnie Mouse pajamas and couldn’t help smiling the moment I saw myself in the mirror.

Sylvia had laughed the first time she saw them.

After that, she never stopped calling me "Minnie."

I walked over to my dressing table and looked at the hair dryer sitting there.

I puffed out my cheeks. "I don’t feel like drying my hair."

I looked toward the bedroom door, and a small frown appeared on my face. "Why is Sylvia taking so long?"

I crossed my arms. "...I’m already starting to miss her bothering me."

Almost as if the universe had heard me—

Knock!

Knock!

Knock!

My eyes immediately lit up. I smiled so widely my cheeks hurt.

"She’s here."

I quickly sat down in front of the mirror and picked up the hair dryer.

"Come in!" I called happily.

The door slowly opened. I turned around with the biggest smile on my face.

The smile disappeared immediately. "...Mrs. Chloe?"

Mrs. Chloe walked inside carrying a tray.

"Miss," she said politely. "Where would you like me to put your dinner?"

I stared at her for a second.

On my head, obviously. Can’t you see the table? I thought angrily.

But I didn’t say it out loud.

I forced a smile. "You can leave it on the small table."

"Yes, Miss." Mrs. Chloe nodded.

Mrs. Chloe placed the tray down carefully before bowing slightly and left the room quietly.

The door clicked shut. I tightened my grip around the hair dryer. Then I bit my lower lip slowly.

Why?

Why isn’t Sylvia coming?

Did I do something wrong?

I lowered my head sadly. Then suddenly, a thought flashed through my mind. I immediately stood up and walked toward the table.

Mrs. Chloe had prepared a small plate of buttered pasta, soft scrambled eggs, and a glass of warm chamomile tea.

I smiled. Sylvia hadn’t eaten since we left the hospital, and also Mrs. Chloe had even arranged everything neatly, just the way Sylvia liked it.

I picked up the tray and walked towards my bedside, opened the drawer, and got her medicine. "If she won’t come to me..."

"I’ll go to her." I said and immediately walked out of my room.

I had never been to Sylvia’s room before because she was always in mine. I walked down the long hallway, balancing the tray carefully in both hands.

A small smile appeared on my face as I looked down at the food. She’ll probably be happy.

When I stopped in front of Sylvia’s bedroom door, I took a deep breath before knocking.

Knock!

Knock!

No answer.

I waited for a few seconds before knocking again.

Knock!

Knock!

Still no answer.

I frowned. "Is she sleeping already?" I muttered. Carefully shifting the tray into one hand, I reached for the doorknob.

It turned easily. "It isn’t locked."

I slowly pushed the door open and stepped inside. The room immediately caught my attention.

It didn’t look anything like mine.

Fantasy posters covered one side of the wall.

Werewolves.

Dragons.

Magic.

Castles.

There were so many of them. And I immediately guessed that was the kind of stories Sylvia loved reading.

A blue sofa sat neatly against the wall with a medium-sized round table in front of it. Books were stacked neatly on one side.

Then my eyes landed on the bedside table.

A small Minnie Mouse poster was standing there. I smiled immediately.

"So you like Minnie too."

I slowly looked around the room again.

"Sylvia?" I called but she didn’t answer.

No answer.

Just then...

I heard the sound of running water from the bathroom.

Looks like she’s still taking a shower.

I walked over and placed the tray on the table before making my way to her bed. Even her bedsheets had Minnie Mouse all over them.

A small smile tugged at my lips.

"So cute."

I sat down, and the bed sank a little under my weight. "...It’s really soft."

I lay back and stretched out across the bed, absentmindedly kicking my feet in the air while waiting.

After a few minutes, the sound of running water stopped. I immediately sat up, and the bathroom door slowly opened.

Sylvia stepped out. A black towel was wrapped around her body, stopping a little above her knees. Her damp hair clung to her neck and shoulders; tiny drops of water rolled down her skin.

The moment she saw me. She jumped with her eyes widened. "W-What are you doing here, Amelia?"

She quickly grabbed the towel tighter against herself.

I didn’t answer. I was too busy looking at her. She looked cute.

Really cute.

I haven’t seen her like this before. I smiled and tilted my head to the right and then to the left.

"You look cute," I said without even realizing the words had left my mouth.

Sylvia froze. A faint blush slowly spread across her cheeks. She swallowed quietly before turning away.

She turned away immediately and grabbed a small towel hanging beside the bathroom door and began drying her wet hair.

I rested my chin in my hand and quietly watched her. And for some reason...

I really liked seeing this side of Sylvia.

Sylvia walked over to her dressing table and plugged in the hair dryer. The room immediately filled with the soft humming sound.

I stood up and walked toward her. The moment she noticed me coming, she quickly stood up and took a step back.

My smile disappeared. She... stepped away from me?

"Sylvia?" I called, but she didn’t answer.

A strange pain suddenly spread inside my chest so that it hurt. My fingers curled slightly at my side.

I took another step toward her, looking sadly at her. "So... you really are avoiding me."

Sylvia still didn’t say anything. Her eyes kept avoiding mine. Every time I took a step forward, she took one back, like she was afraid of me. And that hurt far more than I wanted to admit.

There was nowhere else for her to go. I stopped just a few inches away. And the room suddenly felt too quiet.

The hair dryer continued humming on the table, but neither of us moved to pick it up.

"Talk to me," I said softly. My voice came out barely a whisper.

"Please... what did I do?"

She lowered her eyes. The silence hurt more than I expected.

I forced a small smile that didn’t feel real.

"...Fine."

"If you don’t want me around anymore. I’ll leave."

I turned before she could see how much those words hurt to say. I had barely taken two steps when fingers suddenly wrapped around my wrist.

I stopped. Before I could react, Sylvia pulled me back, catching me off guard. I stumbled forward until I was standing right in front of her again.

I slowly raised my head, and Sylvia was looking at me. My throat tightened.

"You hate me..." The words escaped before I could stop them.

A tear slipped down my cheek. "You hate me now, don’t you?"

I laughed weakly. "...But I..."

The rest of the sentence refused to come out because I didn’t even know what I wanted to say.

Sylvia slowly wrapped her other arm around my waist and pulled me closer until only a breath separated us.

I could feel the warmth of her skin and also hear her breathing.

Sylvia closed her eyes. When she opened them again, she looked straight at me.

"...Do you love me, Amelia?"

Everything inside me went still.

Love?

I stared at her. My mind suddenly became blank.

Do I love Sylvia?

Hell no, I don’t think so. I’ve never liked girls.

But why did it hurt whenever Sylvia walked away?

Why did seeing her smile at someone else make me feel so strange?

Why was she the first person I looked for every morning?

My thoughts tangled together until I couldn’t separate one from another. A strange feeling twisted in the pit of my stomach.

Immediately, one terrifying thought crossed my mind.

Wait...

No way. Don’t tell me...

I’m...

I’m really into girls...
