~~~~~ Amelia POV ~~~~~
We stepped out into the corridor and made our way toward the staircase.
"Lia," Camila called.
"Mmm?" I turned slightly toward Camila.
She stared at me for a moment before asking.
"Are you and Dominic friends already?"
I stared at her quietly before slowly shaking my head.
"No," I replied.
"I don’t need any friends."
A small smile appeared on her face. "That’s a relief."
I furrowed my eyebrows a little. "Why did you ask?"
"Nothing." She replied and turned around before walking down the staircase.
I watched her for a moment, a small smile tugging at my lips.
She had really been acting weird today.
I quickly followed after her.
A few moments later, we reached the reception and headed toward the hospital entrance.
Then, I suddenly stopped walking and froze, my eyes widening.
Daniela was sitting on one of the chairs in the reception.
While—
While Sylvia was standing with a guy.
He was tall, with soft brown hair and a gentle smile playing on his lips.
Fine. He was handsome.
But that didn’t mean I had to like him.
He was talking to my girl.
My eyes stayed on them. Sylvia reached up and absentmindedly fixed his hair.
He smiled at her, and she smiled back.
They looked... comfortable around each other.
Something inside my chest tightened as I watched them.
My fingers slowly curled around the strap of my school bag.
I couldn’t look away. A thousand thoughts rushed through my head all at once.
I wanted to walk over there. I wanted to pull Sylvia away from him. I wanted to ask him why he was standing so close to my girl. I wanted to tell him to stay away from her.
I wanted to—
"Hey, Lia."
Camila’s voice broke through my thoughts. She was looking in the same direction.
"It looks like your little sister is in love."
The words hit me harder than they should have.
Before I could even respond—
The guy reached up and gently tucked a loose strand of Sylvia’s hair behind her ear.
Sylvia laughed. Then she playfully smacked the top of his head, making him laugh too.
I couldn’t continue watching. My heart already hurt enough.
Before I did something I’d regret...
I looked away.
"...Let’s go."
Camila glanced at me, then quietly nodded, and we walked toward the exit.
"Amelia!" Daniela called after me.
I looked back over my shoulder.
Sylvia was looking at me.
Her hands were still resting on the guy’s shoulders, with a small smile still on her face.
I bit the inside of my cheek until it hurt. I turned away immediately and walked out of the hospital with Camila.
The walk to the parking lot was silent.
Camila unlocked the car, and the headlights flashed once.
I slipped into the passenger seat. The moment I closed the door, I pulled out my phone and opened my chat with Sylvia.
My fingers hovered over the keyboard.
Amelia: Who’s that guy?
I stared at the message and then deleted it.
I typed again.
Amelia: Sylvia... I’m jealous. Please stay away from him.
I stared at the message and deleted it too.
I then let out a quiet sigh and locked my phone.
"Lia?"
I looked up.
Camila was staring at me with quiet concern. "Are you okay?"
I forced a smile. "Mmm."
"I’m fine."
She didn’t look convinced, but she didn’t press the issue further. Instead, she started the engine.
The car slowly pulled away from the hospital.
I rested my head against the window and looked back one last time.
The entrance was already disappearing behind us.
I lowered my gaze.
Sylvia...
Why?
I frowned and lowered my eyes to my hands.
Camila looked at me quietly before turning her attention back to the road.
Soon, we arrived at Camila’s apartment.
She drove into the parking lot and pulled into her usual space.
Danny’s car and Caleb’s car were already parked nearby. Camila had given both of them spare keys during our practice for last year’s tournament, so they came and went whenever they wanted.
She switched off the engine. Then she turned toward me and opened her arms.
"Need a hug?" she asked with a small smile.
I raised my head and looked at her.
I was sure my face looked like a complete mess. I didn’t even need a mirror to know I looked terrible.
I probably looked like I’d cried all the way here.
I nodded and leaned over and wrapped my arms around her, burying my face in the crook of her neck.
Camila was the only person who comforted me without asking why I was sad.
She never asked questions. And she never pressured me to talk.
It had become her habit.
Whenever she sensed I wasn’t okay, she’d simply ask one question.
"Need a hug?"
That was all.
And somehow, I had never once refused.
She gently stroked my hair in silence, her fingers moving slowly through it.
Neither of us said a word.
After a few minutes, I slowly pulled away and gave her a small smile.
"Thanks, Cam."
She smiled back and gave me a light nod.
Normally, whenever I hugged Camila, I always felt better.
But this time...
I didn’t feel any better at all.
The ache in my chest refused to go away.
I reached for the door handle and stepped out of the car.
Camila grabbed her bag from the back seat before getting out as well.
She locked the car, and we walked toward the apartment together and knocked.
Knock!
Knock!
The door flew open almost immediately.
"Hey, Amelia!"
Sasha threw herself at me before I could even step inside. She wrapped her arms around me tightly and dramatically sniffed my neck.
"I missed you."
I frowned. Then glanced at Camila and then back at Sasha.
"If you actually missed me..."
I paused.
"...what are you going to do about Evan?"
The moment the words left my mouth, Sasha immediately pulled away from me. She stared at me for a second.
Then—
"Hahaha
Danny and Caleb burst into laughter.
Sasha huffed and shot me an annoyed glare.
"You’re so mean."
She turned around and stormed back inside.
I couldn’t help smiling as I shook my head and followed her.
Behind me, Camila was already covering her mouth, trying not to laugh as she closed the door.
"Amelia," Caleb laughed. "Why did you roast her like that?"
I shrugged innocently. "I just wanted to remind her that she misses someone a lot more than she misses me."
That only made Danny laugh even harder.
I walked over and dropped onto the sofa.
Then I looked toward the other side of the living room and waved at Felix, who was still busy on his phone.
"Hey, Felix."
"Hey, Amelia," Felix said as he looked up from his phone, smiled, and gave me a small wave.
I smiled back and waved.
Camila sat down beside me and greeted him as well. He nodded at her before lowering his gaze to his phone again.
A few seconds later, he locked his phone, stood up, and looked at all of us.
"It’s almost time," he said.
"I arranged a practice match with TitanWolves by 4 p.m."
"TitanWolves?" Danny almost shouted.
Felix nodded once.
The room suddenly fell quiet.
The smile on Caleb’s face disappeared immediately. He leaned back against the sofa and let out a slow sigh.
I lowered my eyes.
TitanWolves...
They were the team that knocked us out of last year’s tournament.
Not because they were better.
But because of how cunning they were.
Felix looked around the room, immediately noticing the change in everyone’s expressions.
"...Do you all have a grudge against them?" he asked.
Danny folded her arms. "We lost to them in last year’s tournament."
"I see," Felix said and nodded thoughtfully.
"That’s actually a good thing."
Every single one of us turned to look at him.
Camila frowned. "...What’s actually good about that?"
Felix smiled.
"The fact that you lost to them."
None of us said a word.
Felix let the silence linger for a moment before speaking again.
"If you lost to them, then you need to find out why."
"Figure out where you made mistakes and fix them."
"You can’t avoid TitanWolves forever."
"You will meet them again this year, and there’s a good chance you will. They’ll probably come in with the same strategies that beat you last time."
He folded his arms and looked around at each of us.
"So this time, you have to be ready."
"You have to communicate better as a team."
"You need to understand each other’s strengths and weaknesses."
"And you need to study your opponents."
"Learn how every player on TitanWolves thinks."
"Learn their habits."
"Their playstyles."
"Their strengths."
"And their weaknesses."
He smiled softly. "Because once you understand your opponent..."
"They become much easier to beat."
He paused and looked at each of us one after another.
"So..."
"Isn’t this actually a good opportunity?"
None of us had an answer.
Felix clapped his hands once.
"Alright."
"Let’s get started."
