"Sit up. Let me scrub you," I whispered behind her ear. "I don’t want you catching a cold."
Sylvia nodded and slowly sat up.
I picked up the bath sponge and gently scrubbed her skin. Once I was done, I washed myself. A few minutes later, we had both finished bathing.
I stepped out of the bathtub and grabbed a towel. Sylvia reached out and wrapped her arms around my neck as I carried her out of the tub.
I carefully dried her body before drying mine. Then I carried her out of the bathroom and back into the bedroom.
The moment I pushed the bathroom door open, the bedroom was still filled with the fresh scent of oranges, mixed with the lingering warmth of the intimate moments we had shared earlier.
I carried Sylvia over to her dressing table and gently sat her down on the chair.
I walked to her wardrobe and picked out a pair of brown silk pajamas for her. As I trailed my fingers across the neatly arranged clothes, I found another matching pair.
A smile spread across my face. I picked it up and walked back to her.
I helped her into the pajamas before applying her night skincare. Then I changed into the matching pair myself.
Sylvia smiled as she watched me.
"I heard you don’t even like touching other people’s clothes, let alone wearing them," she said with a teasing smile.
"You’re not other people."
"You’re my girl."
Her smile softened. "I love you so much."
I smiled and gently stroked her hair. Then I walked over to the bed, removed the bedsheet, and replaced it with a fresh one.
When I was done, I walked back to her and carried my baby girl into my arms.
"I’m not a baby," Sylvia complained the moment I picked her up.
"You’re my baby," I replied proudly.
She laughed softly.
I laid her gently on the bed before sitting beside her.
"Are you still in pain?" I asked, unable to hide the worry in my voice.
She shook her head and reached up to pat my head gently.
Ring!
Ring!
Ring!
My phone suddenly rang, interrupting us. That was when I remembered my phone.
I stood up and walked over to where I had dropped my bag earlier. I opened it, pulled out my phone, and glanced at the screen for the caller’s ID.
Camila.
I answered immediately.
"Hey, Cam."
"Amelia."
A voice that came through the speaker wasn’t Camila’s. A slight frown appeared on my face as I recognized it.
"Auntie."
"Amelia, can you come over, please?" she pleaded. Her voice was trembling.
"What happened, Auntie?" I asked, my heart beginning to race.
"Camila is seriously sick."
"Seriously sick?" I asked in surprise. "But she looked perfectly fine when she dropped me off."
"Yeah. It started after she got home," she explained. "Please come. She refuses to let the doctor examine her unless you’re here."
I closed my eyes and let out a quiet sigh.
"But, Auntie..."
"Please."
I glanced back at Sylvia. We had only just reconciled. And now another problem had come knocking on my door.
"...Fine. I’m coming."
"Thank you so much, Amelia," she said, sounding as though a heavy burden had just been lifted from her shoulders, and she ended the call.
"Who’s that?" Sylvia asked as I walked back to the bed.
"Camila."
A small frown appeared on her face. She lowered her eyes for a moment before giving a quiet nod.
I sat beside her and gently cupped her face, making her look at me.
"Babe."
"She’s sick. Auntie said she refuses to let the doctor examine her unless I’m there."
Sylvia didn’t say anything. She simply nodded.
But I could see the disappointment in her eyes, no matter how hard she tried to hide it.
I smiled softly and leaned forward, pressing a gentle kiss against her lips.
"I love you," I whispered. "And you’re the only woman I’ll ever love, okay?"
"Really?" she asked, searching my eyes.
"Mmm. Really."
A beautiful smile spread across her face as she wrapped her arms around me.
"I just want to stay close to you all the time," she murmured.
I smiled and gently stroked her hair.
"Me too."
I hesitated for a second before asking, "Do you want to come with me?"
She slowly shook her head.
"No."
A small frown appeared on my face.
"Why? Doesn’t my baby want to come with me?"
She smiled faintly and pinched my cheek.
"I do."
"But I’ll stay here and wait for you, okay?"
I looked at her for a long moment before letting out a small sigh.
"Fine."
"If that’s what you want."
I leaned forward and placed a lingering kiss on her forehead.
"Get some sleep, alright?"
She nodded with a smile. "I will."
I smiled back, stood up, and picked up my bag. Before leaving, I looked at her one last time.
She was still watching me.
"Wait for me, okay?" I whispered. "I’ll be back before you know it."
Then I turned, walked to the door, and quietly left the room.
~~~~~ Third-person POV ~~~~~
The moment Amelia walked out of the room, Sylvia’s eyes remained fixed on the closed door.
A small smile slowly spread across her face as she pulled the blanket over herself.
She closed her eyes.
The memories of everything they had shared a few moments ago replayed in her mind, making the smile on her lips grow even softer.
"My babe... Amelia," she murmured with a shy smile, raising a hand to lightly touch her lips.
Buzz!
Buzz!
Buzz!
Her phone vibrated on the sofa.
She let out a quiet sigh before climbing out of bed and walking over to it.
Picking it up, she unlocked the screen and checked the message.
Melissa: Hey, troublemaker. Are you coming tomorrow?
Sylvia rolled her eyes and quickly typed a reply.
Sylvia: No.
Almost immediately, another message popped up.
Melissa: Hey, why?
Sylvia: None of your business.
A few seconds later—
Melissa: I’m coming over tomorrow. Just send me the address later.
A small sigh escaped Sylvia’s lips.
Sylvia: Fine.
She locked her phone and placed it back on the sofa before climbing into bed again.
She closed her eyes, hoping sleep would come.
It didn’t.
She had spent years sleeping alone without any problem.
But somehow...
Ever since Amelia entered her life, sleeping without her had started to feel strangely empty.
She rolled from one side of the bed to the other, trying to force herself to sleep.
Minutes passed.
Still nothing.
With another quiet sigh, she threw the blanket aside, climbed out of bed, and walked toward the bedroom door.
She walked straight to Amelia’s room.
The door was still slightly open.
She pushed it open and stepped inside.
The familiar scent of Amelia immediately wrapped around her.
Sylvia closed her eyes and took a slow, deep breath, letting the comforting fragrance settle her restless heart.
A faint smile touched her lips before she opened her eyes again and walked toward the bed.
"This feels safe," she whispered.
She climbed onto the bed, pulled the warm blanket over herself, and curled up in Amelia’s place.
The pillow still carried Amelia’s scent.
Sylvia hugged it tightly.
"Good night, my love," she murmured.
"Please come back soon."
"I’m already missing you."
A lonely smile appeared on her face as she closed her eyes.
For the first time since Amelia had left, the emptiness inside her eased.
Within minutes, sleep claimed her as gently as a summer breeze.
~~~~~ Amelia’s POV ~~~~~
I slipped out of Sylvia’s room and quietly closed the door behind me.
For a long moment, I stood there with my hand still resting on the doorknob.
"I’ll be back soon," I whispered to the empty room before forcing myself to turn away.
The mansion was quiet as I made my way down the hallway.
When I reached the staircase, I paused.
"Mr. Clifford?" I called.
Silence answered me.
I tried again.
"Mr. Clifford."
A door opened nearby, and Mrs. Chloe stepped out. She lowered her head respectfully.
"Miss, Mr. Clifford has already returned to the hospital."
"I see."
She hesitated before speaking again.
"Before he left, he asked me to give this to you."
She disappeared into the kitchen and returned moments later with the same file I had seen in Mr. Clifford’s hands earlier that evening.
I glanced at it before looking back at her.
"Keep it safe for me."
"I’ll look at it when I get back."
"Yes, Miss," she replied with another bow.
I nodded and turned to leave.
"Miss..."
Her voice stopped me just as I reached the front door.
I looked over my shoulder.
"Where are you going this late?"
The moment our eyes met, she lowered her head.
"I’m sorry, Miss. I didn’t mean to overstep."
I offered her a reassuring smile.
"It’s alright."
"I’m going to Camila’s house."
A flicker of concern crossed her face, but she didn’t ask another question.
I gave her a small nod before stepping out into the cool night, letting the door close quietly behind me.
