"Who’s there?"
A familiar voice suddenly came from the front door.
"Miss, are you the one?"
My heart nearly jumped out of my chest.
That voice...
Mrs. Chloe.
I immediately sat up straight, my eyes widening as my mind went completely blank for a second.
The quiet night suddenly felt too loud. I could hear my own breathing, the faint hum of the car, and the soft rustling of the trees outside.
"Yes. It’s me, Mrs. Chloe," I answered quickly.
My voice came out a little too fast.
Mrs. Chloe stopped before she could come any closer.
"Okay, Miss."
I heard her footsteps moving away as she walked back inside.
I stayed frozen for a few seconds.
Then I finally let out the breath I had been holding.
I closed my eyes and placed a hand against my chest.
My heart was beating so hard beneath my palm.
"That was close..."
I opened my eyes and immediately turned toward Sylvia.
I shot her an angry glare.
She only smiled.
Her hands came together in front of her chest as she gave me an innocent, pleading look.
"Your fault," I whispered.
"I’m sorry, babe."
She lowered her hands and gave me that same innocent smile.
"I was just..."
She paused, trying not to laugh.
"...hungry for you."
My entire face immediately became hot.
I swallowed and looked away.
"Shut up."
I didn’t want to look at her anymore.
I bent down and picked up the towel from the seat. My hands were still slightly shaky as I cleaned myself up before quickly changing into the pajamas she had brought for me.
The soft fabric felt cool against my skin, and I was grateful for the little bit of comfort it gave me.
When I finished, Sylvia straightened and stepped aside.
I climbed out of the car, adjusting the clothes before shutting the door.
"Give my keys to Sir Martin," I said without looking back.
I heard Sylvia laugh softly behind me.
I clenched my jaw.
I refused to turn around.
She wasn’t scared of getting caught.
I was.
And maybe that was the biggest difference between us.
Sylvia didn’t seem to care what anyone thought.
But I did.
I cared about my parents. I cared about my family’s reputation. And most of all, I cared about what would happen if they ever found out about us.
I wanted to have an open relationship with Sylvia. I wanted to hold her hand without looking around first.
I wanted to introduce her proudly instead of stopping halfway through a sentence because I was afraid of what people might think about her.
I wanted to show the world that she was mine.
But she was my sister in my parents’ eyes.
They would never accept this kind of relationship.
They didn’t even support same-sex relationships. To them, everything had to look perfect. Our family name had to remain untouched, and anything that could damage their reputation would never be tolerated.
I sighed quietly.
Maybe I was asking for too much too soon.
Maybe now wasn’t the right time.
I could wait.
After high school...
Maybe then I would finally be old enough to make my own choices.
Maybe then I wouldn’t have to hide anymore.
I nodded slowly, almost convincing myself.
"Just a little longer."
I turned toward the mansion.
The warm lights from the windows spilled across the driveway, making the house look peaceful despite the storm of thoughts inside my head.
I walked toward the entrance, pushed the heavy front door open, and stepped inside.
The familiar scent of the mansion surrounded me immediately.
I took one last breath before letting the door close quietly behind me.
I walked toward the staircase and climbed up slowly.
The mansion was quiet. The only sound was the soft echo of my footsteps against the polished floor.
When I reached my room, I pushed the door open and stepped inside.
I slipped off my shoes and left them beside the door before closing it behind me.
For a moment, I simply stood there in the quiet room, letting out a slow breath as my shoulders finally relaxed.
I shook my head and walked straight to my bedside table. I dropped my phone on it before turning and heading toward the bathroom.
The quiet sound of my footsteps followed me across the room.
I pulled the door open, stepped inside, and closed it behind me.
The cool tiles pressed beneath my feet as I pulled off my clothes and stepped into the shower.
I reached up and turned the handle.
A second later, warm water rushed from the showerhead, pouring over my head and shoulders before running down my back.
I closed my eyes.
The warmth slowly sank into my skin, loosening the tension I hadn’t realized I was carrying.
I placed one hand against the tiled wall and took a deep breath.
The steady sound of the water filled the bathroom, drowning out everything else.
I breathed in slowly.
Then I breathed out.
And did it again.
Little by little, my heartbeat began to settle down.
I stood there without moving, letting the warm water run over me.
I turned off the shower and stepped out, reaching for a fresh towel.
I wrapped the larger one around my body before grabbing the smaller towel to dry my hair. I rubbed it gently through the damp strands before patting the rest of my skin dry.
I walked out of the bathroom and back into my bedroom, closing the door softly behind me.
The room felt cool against my freshly washed skin.
I walked straight to my dressing table, plugged in my hair dryer, and switched it on.
The warm air blew through my damp hair as I slowly dried it, running my fingers through the strands.
As I worked, I couldn’t help wondering why Sylvia hadn’t come back yet.
Maybe she was taking a shower too.
I shrugged and continued drying my hair.
Once it was completely dry, I walked over to my wardrobe and opened it. I looked through my clothes for a moment before picking out a white silk-cotton pajama set.
I changed into it and walked back to my dressing table.
I picked up my usual face mask and applied it carefully to my face, enjoying the cool feeling against my skin.
When I finished, I walked back to my bed and lay down.
The mattress softened beneath me as I stretched out and reached toward the bedside table.
I picked up my phone and checked the screen.
Nothing.
I frowned slightly.
Still no Sylvia.
I stared at my phone for another few seconds before sighing and letting my head sink deeper into the pillow.
"Where is she?"
I unlocked my phone and scrolled down through my messages until I found Camila’s name.
I tapped on her number and pressed the call button.
Ring.
Ring.
Ring.
I waited, but the call wasn’t connecting.
I frowned and tried again.
Ring.
Ring.
Ring.
Still nothing.
I pulled the phone away from my ear and stared at the screen for a moment.
"Why isn’t it connecting?"
I let out a deep breath before locking my phone.
Maybe she was busy.
I unlocked my phone again and opened our messages.
I stared at the screen for a moment before typing.
Amelia: My baby, please come back to me. I’m missing you.
I pressed send.
The message appeared on the screen, but there was no reply.
I stared at it for a few seconds before locking my phone again.
I couldn’t just lie there and wait.
I climbed down from the bed and slipped my feet into my slippers.
The room felt strangely quiet now.
I walked toward the door and reached for the handle.
I opened it and stepped into the hallway.
The cool air brushed against my skin as I pulled the door closed behind me.
Click.
I stood there for a moment, looking down the quiet hallway.
I tightened my grip around my phone.
"Where are you, Camila?"
I took a slow breath before walking away from my room.
I walked through the hallway until I reached Sylvia’s room.
I was about to knock when I suddenly heard her laughing from inside.
I stopped.
Her laugh was soft and carefree, the kind that immediately caught my attention.
I raised my hand toward the door again.
Then I heard her speak.
"I love you."
My hand froze in the air.
I stared at the door.
For a moment, I couldn’t move.
She was probably on the phone.
But who was she talking to?
My heart sank a little as the words replayed in my head.
I love you.
I swallowed hard.
Why did hearing those words from her suddenly make my chest feel so tight?
I took a small step closer to the door without even realizing it.
I wanted to hear who she was talking to.
At the same time, I was afraid of what I might hear next.
My fingers slowly curled around my phone.
Maybe it was just a friend.
Maybe it was someone from work.
Maybe I was making a big deal out of nothing.
I took a slow breath and tried to convince myself not to overthink it.
But my heart wasn’t listening.
I stood there quietly, staring at the closed door.
A strange feeling settled in my stomach.
I hated that I was already feeling jealous without even knowing who was on the other end of the call.
I lowered my hand.
Maybe I should just walk away. But my feet wouldn’t move.
I stayed there, listening to the faint sound of Sylvia’s voice through the door, wondering who had just received the words I secretly wished she would say only to me.
