"Which brother?"
Sylvia’s smile widened. "My foster parents’ son."
True.
I had completely forgotten that Sylvia had foster parents who had children of their own.
"That man you saw me with at the hospital the other time." She nodded. "He’s my brother."
I swallowed hard as everything finally clicked into place.
Oh.
So I had been jealous for nothing?
All those thoughts...
All that anger...
All because I had misunderstood her.
Amelia, you’re seriously too delusional.
I mentally groaned.
"Why didn’t you tell me that before now?" I asked with a small frown.
Sylvia simply shrugged. "I didn’t think it was something I needed to explain."
I stared at her.
Well...
She had a point. I was the one who had jumped to conclusions.
Sylvia stared at my face for a moment before her eyes narrowed slightly.
"But first of all, babe..." She leaned closer and looked at my face.
"Why are you wearing makeup at this time of the night?"
I froze.
Oh. That’s right.
I had completely forgotten I was still wearing makeup. I quickly looked away, feeling my cheeks heat up.
"I thought you didn’t love me anymore," I admitted quietly.
Sylvia’s expression changed immediately.
The teasing disappeared from her face.
"Babe."
She reached out and gently turned my face toward her, making sure I looked at her.
"I have never once thought that." Her thumb brushed softly across my cheek.
"If anything, I was the one wondering if you didn’t like me."
I blinked. "What?"
She gave me a small, almost nervous smile.
"You’ve been acting strange lately."
"I have?"
She nodded. "Sometimes you look at me like you want to tell me something, then you change your mind. Sometimes you pull away when I get close."
She paused. "And tonight..."
Her eyes moved over my face again. "You were crying, right?"
I immediately looked down.
Sylvia gently lifted my chin. "Don’t hide from me."
I swallowed. "I wasn’t..."
"Amelia."
Her voice was soft, but firm enough to stop my excuse before I could finish it.
I sighed. "Fine."
I looked into her eyes. "I was scared."
"Of what?"
"Of losing you."
Sylvia’s eyes softened. "You thought I was going to leave you?"
I nodded slowly.
She pulled me into her arms without saying anything.
I buried my face against her shoulder, feeling the warmth of her body slowly calm the ache that had been sitting in my chest.
"I could never get tired of you," she whispered.
I closed my eyes. "You promise?"
"I promise."
She tightened her arms around me. "You’re stuck with me, babe."
A small laugh escaped me. "Forever?"
"Forever."
I finally smiled against her shoulder.
Maybe I really had been overthinking everything.
But I couldn’t help it.
I loved her too much. And sometimes, loving someone that much made every little thing feel like a threat.
Sylvia pulled back slightly and looked at me.
"Now..." Her eyes drifted toward my face. "Are you going to tell me why you decided to put on a full face of makeup at this hour?"
I immediately looked away. "Nothing."
She stared at me.
I could already see the amusement returning to her eyes.
"Babe."
I sighed. "Don’t laugh."
"I’m not laughing."
"You are."
"I’m trying not to."
I covered my face with both hands. "I just wanted to look pretty."
Sylvia gently pulled my hands away from my face. "You always look pretty."
I blinked. "Even without all this?"
"Especially without all this," she smiled.
I felt my cheeks warm again.
"You’re just saying that."
"No." She leaned closer. "I’m saying it because it’s true."
I couldn’t stop the smile that slowly spread across my face.
Maybe I really had been too delusional.
She reached out and cupped the back of my neck.
"I’m just so happy to see you jealous," she said, brushing her thumb across my lips with a wide smile.
She turned toward the table, picked up some makeup wipes, and started cleaning my face.
"I’ll still love you even if you’re disfigured."
I smiled as I watched her wipe the makeup from my face.
She was so gentle with every movement. When she was done, she tossed the used wipes into the bin.
Before I could even react, she slipped one arm beneath my knees and the other around my back and lifted me into her arms as if I weighed nothing.
I quickly wrapped my arms around her neck to steady myself.
"How were you able to lift me up?" I asked, still surprised by how easy it had been for her.
"Because you’re my baby." She smiled. "So I have to be able to lift you into my arms like the baby you are."
"Who’s the baby here?" I asked, smiling.
"You."
She didn’t even hesitate. "You’re my baby and also my wife."
I shook my head, laughing softly. "Fine. Anything is fine by me, husband."
Sylvia immediately looked away. Her smile grew so wide that I could almost feel how much she was trying not to look too happy.
Then she turned back to me. "Call me that again, wifey."
"No."
I answered immediately.
"Please."
She carefully lowered me onto the bed, letting my legs down until my feet touched the floor.
I placed my hands on the bed and leaned back, shaking my head from side to side.
She was already sulking.
I couldn’t hold back my laugh when I saw her face.
"Husband." I finally called her, moved farther onto the bed, and lay down.
Sylvia’s face brightened immediately. She jumped onto the bed and started kissing my face.
"Mmwah."
"Mmwah."
"Mmwah."
She kept kissing me until I started laughing so hard that my stomach began to hurt.
"Let’s go to bed," I said, trying to pull away from her.
"No."
She continued kissing my cheeks. "I want to feel all of my wifey."
I stared at her. "Are you a hungry beast?"
Sylvia suddenly stopped. The smile disappeared from her face, and she pulled away from me.
My smile disappeared too.
"Babe..." I looked at her, confused. "Did I do anything?"
She didn’t answer. She simply looked away.
For a few seconds, I stayed quiet, trying to figure out what I had said wrong.
Then—
"Arghhhh!"
She suddenly climbed on top of me again and bit my neck.
"Ouch!" I screamed softly.
Sylvia pulled away, laughing with a wide smile.
"Yes. As long as you’re the one, I’m obviously a hungry beast."
I rubbed the spot where she had bitten me.
"So cheesy."
She grinned. "And you love it."
I rolled my eyes. "Maybe."
She leaned closer. "I heard that."
I couldn’t stop myself from smiling. "Go to sleep, hungry beast."
She laughed softly. "Only if my wifey sleeps beside me."
I shook my head. "You’re impossible."
"And you’re stuck with me."
I smiled.
Sylvia laid down beside me and pulled me closer to herself until my back was pressed against her.
I could feel the warmth radiating from her body, making me feel comfortable in her arms. Her arms wrapped tightly around me as she held me close.
I felt her giggling softly behind me.
I smiled to myself.
She leaned closer to my ear and gave it a playful lick.
My ear twitched immediately, and I closed my eyes, trying to stop the small gasp that almost escaped me.
She giggled again. Then she licked my ear once more before leaning back and placing a soft kiss on my back.
I smiled, shaking my head. She really couldn’t stop teasing me.
"Good night, wifey," she whispered.
I smiled to myself and closed my eyes.
"Good night, husband," I whispered.
For a few seconds, everything was quiet.
My back was still resting against Sylvia’s chest, her arms wrapped comfortably around my waist. I could feel the steady rise and fall of her breathing behind me.
Then her arms tightened slightly around me.
"Babe."
"Mmm?"
"Say it again."
I smiled. "What?"
"You know what."
I turned my head slightly, just enough to look at her from the corner of my eye.
"Husband?"
Her face immediately brightened. "Again."
I laughed softly. "You really like that word."
"Very much."
I shook my head, settling back against her.
"Good night, husband."
Sylvia smiled and pressed a soft kiss against the back of my head. "Good night, wifey."
Her arms tightened around me again, pulling me closer until there was barely any space between us.
I relaxed against her warmth. For the first time that night, my mind felt completely quiet.
Her fingers gently traced small circles over my arm as her breathing slowly became deeper.
I smiled with my eyes closed.
"Babe?" she called again.
"Mmm?"
"I love you."
My heart warmed. "I love you too."
She kissed the top of my head. "Now sleep."
I let out a small laugh. "Okay."
I settled deeper against her chest, listening to the steady rhythm of her breathing behind me.
Before long, the warmth of her body and the quietness of the room slowly pulled me into sleep.
