The loading screen faded.
The map appeared.
BIND.
A desert map split between two bombsites, A and B, connected by narrow paths, tight corners, and long sightlines where a single mistake could decide an entire fight.
The character-select screen lit up my monitor.
Five VØID icons filled our side.
Across the lobby, five PHANTOM LEGION icons appeared.
I adjusted my headset and leaned closer to the screen.
"Comps locked," Felix said from behind us, his arms folded across his chest. "Lia, you’re on Jett. Cam, Omen. Caleb, Sova. Sasha, Killjoy. Danny, Breach."
I glanced at my loadout.
Full buy.
Vandal.
Light Shield.
Two flashes.
Updraft.
Tailwind.
Everything was ready.
Jett was built for speed. She could dash out of danger, reposition quickly, and turn a split-second opening into a kill.
Camila’s Omen could cover entire areas in dark smoke, cutting off enemy vision and creating openings for the rest of us.
Caleb’s Sova had a drone that could scout ahead and reveal enemy positions.
Sasha’s Killjoy could set up an alarm bot to warn us about anyone sneaking through, while her turret could automatically fire at enemies.
And Danny’s Breach had abilities that could disrupt enemies even through walls.
Five agents. Five different roles.
If we played them correctly, we could cover each other’s weaknesses.
If we didn’t...
We’d get punished.
"Everyone, focus," Felix said.
Camila shifted in her chair beside me, her smoke abilities already selected and ready.
"Ready?" she asked.
I nodded.
"Ready."
The pre-round timer appeared.
5...
Caleb’s voice came through my headset.
"Sova drone first. Check Hookah."
4...
Sasha placed her alarm bot near the showers.
"Trip’s down."
3...
Danny took a slow breath, her Breach abilities ready.
2...
Camila’s fingers moved quickly over her keyboard as she cycled through her smoke options.
1...
ROUND START.
"Sova drone’s up," Caleb said.
His scouting drone flew ahead, its mechanical wings humming through my headset.
"Nothing on Hookah. Rotating check to Short."
We moved together.
All five of us pushed toward the path leading to Bombsite A.
For the first few seconds, nothing happened.
No gunfire.
No footsteps.
Only the soft movement of our characters and the distant hum of the map.
Then Camila stopped.
"Wait."
I stopped immediately.
Her smoking ability remained ready in her hand.
"What?" Caleb asked.
Camila tilted her head slightly.
"Footsteps."
My fingers tightened around the mouse.
"Where?"
"Elbow."
I held my breath.
At first, I heard nothing.
Then—
Faint footsteps.
Almost hidden beneath the game audio.
Then they grew louder.
Someone was moving through Elbow toward us.
"Contact! Elbow!" Sasha shouted.
An enemy Reyna rounded the corner and pushed directly toward us.
I reacted on instinct.
My crosshair snapped toward her.
I was fired.
Camila fired at almost the exact same time.
Reyna took several hits but immediately activated Dismiss, vanishing from sight before we could finish her.
"Don’t chase!" Felix warned over comms.
I stopped myself.
For a second, every part of me wanted to push after her.
But I held my position.
Good thing I did.
Two more enemies suddenly appeared from Short.
A Sova.
And a Cypher.
They peeked almost immediately, right at the edge of Camila’s smoke.
"Two! Short, pushing through the smoke!" Danny shouted.
Gunfire exploded through my headset.
I ducked behind the Hookah pillar.
Bullets slammed into the wall beside me, tearing chunks from the surface.
My heart jumped.
"Fall back to the site!" Caleb ordered. "Hold default!"
We retreated.
But Phantom Legion didn’t give us the space.
Their Sova drone flew through the opening and revealed Danny in the middle of our retreat.
"Tagged!"
The pressure increased immediately.
"Lia, left! Elbow’s open!" Camila called.
I reacted.
I activated Jett’s Tailwind and dashed sideways just as a bullet ripped through the space where I’d been standing.
I swung back around the corner and fired.
One hit.
But the Cypher had armor.
The shot wasn’t enough.
"Fuck, he’s got armor!"
Another angle opened.
My health dropped under the pressure.
I retreated behind the truck near the bombsite.
Camila moved beside me.
Her smoke spread between us and Short, creating a wall of darkness that blocked their view.
"You’re low," she said. "Fifty."
"Yeah."
"Stay there. I’ve got the smoke wall."
She peeked around the edge.
The Cypher tried to push through.
Camila fired.
He immediately pulled back.
I took one slow breath.
Then another.
I waited for the moment I could move.
Finally, I peeked through a small gap in the smoke.
The Reyna was exposed.
She was reloading.
I was fired.
HEADSHOT.
Her character dropped.
"Got one!"
"Nice, Lia!" Caleb shouted.
I barely had time to reset my crosshair.
Gunfire erupted from Hookah.
The enemy Sova had rotated around and caught Danny from behind.
"Danny, watch your back!"
She spun.
Too late.
The shots landed first, and her character fell.
"I’m down!"
"Shit!" Sasha shouted.
Phantom Legion immediately pushed their advantage.
They split the site from two directions, forcing us to watch both sides at once.
"They’re splitting us!" Sasha said. "Spike’s about to drop!"
I spotted their Sage moving forward with the Spike.
"Don’t let them plant clean!" Felix called.
My palms were starting to sweat.
I wiped one against my jeans without taking my eyes off the screen.
Camila was still beside me.
"Lia, we’re getting surrounded on both flanks."
"I see them."
My pulse was louder than the game audio.
And they still had the numbers.
Sasha’s alarm bot suddenly activated.
BEEP.
BEEP.
BEEP.
Sasha reacted instantly.
"Elbow!"
She swung toward the warning and caught an enemy trying to sneak behind us.
Shots rang out.
The enemy fell.
But Sasha’s health dropped dangerously low.
"One HP!" she shouted.
Caleb’s scouting drone flew across my screen.
He tried to gather more information.
A burst of gunfire cut it short, and the drone went dark.
A second later—
"Caleb’s out!"
Sasha cursed under her breath.
Now it was just the three of us.
Me.
Camila.
Sasha.
Three against three.
And the Spike was already moving toward our site.
"They’re planting," I said.
I looked toward Sasha.
"Sasha, can you get your turret aimed at it?"
"Already deployed."
Her turret activated on a nearby box.
"Turret’s up."
Camila’s voice remained calm.
"Don’t panic. Hold crossfire."
We spread out, covering the same area from different angles.
The enemy Sage stepped into view and began planting.
The turret immediately opened fire.
BEEP.
BEEP.
BEEP.
Bullets forced Sage away from the Spike before she could finish.
"Spike’s not down clean!" Sasha called. "She bailed!"
That was our chance.
I pushed forward as Camila’s smoke began to clear.
An enemy appeared from Short.
I fired first.
ELIMINATED.
"One down!"
Two enemies left.
Footsteps suddenly came from Hookah.
The remaining players were regrouping, trying to force the plant before they lost their advantage completely.
Camila looked toward the bombsite.
Then she used her smoke again.
A dark cloud spread across the area, swallowing the site in darkness.
"Now," she said quietly. "Through the smoke."
I didn’t wait.
I activated Jett’s Tailwind and dashed forward, my gun already raised.
Camila followed half a second behind me.
Two shapes appeared inside the smoke, barely visible and disoriented.
I was fired.
Camila fired beside me.
Two shots.
Two enemies down.
The screen flashed.
ROUND WON — VØID
For a few seconds, I couldn’t move.
I just stared at the results on the screen.
My heart was still pounding.
My palms were damp against the mouse.
Then Danny screamed through her headset.
"YES!"
I laughed, finally releasing the breath I’d been holding.
Caleb laughed too.
"That smoke read was insane!"
Sasha exhaled heavily.
"I thought that Alarmbot was going to whiff. I really did."
Camila leaned back in her chair and laughed softly.
"We almost lost the site completely."
I looked at the victory banner on my screen.
"We held it."
Felix, still standing behind us, nodded once.
"Good round."
Danny immediately protested.
"Just good?"
Felix looked at her.
"You pushed into Hookah without checking first and died for nothing."
Danny went quiet.
Felix continued.
"They split you with a two-sided attack and nearly planted the Spike clean."
He looked at each of us.
"But your abilities saved the round."
His eyes moved to Sasha.
"The turret bought us the chance to stop the plant."
Then he looked at Camila.
"The smoke won the final fight."
Finally, his eyes settled on me.
"And Lia didn’t chase that first enemy."
I glanced at him.
"That patience mattered," he said.
I turned to look at Camila.
She smiled back at me.
"That’s what I want to see," Felix said. "Smart use of abilities before raw aim. Every round."
The scoreboard appeared.
VØID 1 — 0 PHANTOM LEGION
The win felt good.
Really good.
But nobody celebrated for long.
The next buy phase began.
Our economy was strong after the win, giving us enough credits to buy another full set of weapons and abilities.
Phantom Legion’s economy was weaker after losing the opening round, meaning they couldn’t afford the same weapons and utility we had.
Camila adjusted her headset.
"Ready?"
I smiled.
"Always."
Felix stepped closer behind us.
"Good."
His eyes remained fixed on the scoreboard.
"They know what you can do now."
The buy timer began counting down.
Felix’s voice became more serious.
"Now let’s see how they adjust their approach."
The timer reached zero.
The barriers dropped.
The next round immediately began.
