Falsely Accused, I Started Plundering Monster Traits
Chapter 33: The Shadow AboveLin Yan took his hand.
"You can just call me Captain," Reeves said. "Easier over comms."
"Got it."
Reeves briefly explained his plan. His twelve-man team would stay together while they assessed the situation, with Coach, Rochelle, and Nick moving with them. Once they had a clearer picture of what they were dealing with, they would decide what to do next.
"What about you and Marcus?" he asked.
Lin Yan glanced at Marcus. "Nothing special. He stays with me, and we’ll play it by ear. If you’ve got a better idea once we’re inside, I’m listening."
Reeves nodded. "Works for me."
Lin Yan had always believed professional work was best left to professionals. Reeves and his people knew how to run an operation like this far better than he did.
As for himself, he’d see what happened and deal with it when it came.
Lin Yan put on his helmet while Reeves returned to the others. The twelve operators gathered around him, with Coach, Rochelle, and Nick joining their group. Marcus stayed with Lin Yan.
Lin Yan secured the M2A1’s carrying rig and lifted the weapon.
A familiar panel appeared.
[Estimated onset: 0 hours, 1 minute.]
[Current location lies within the projected Convergence zone.]
[Remain within the projected Convergence zone until onset.]
The last strip of sunset was sinking behind the buildings. Around Lin Yan, Reeves’s team had already taken their positions, while Marcus stayed nearby with his rifle ready.
Lin Yan kept his attention on the System’s countdown.
The final minute ran out.
Nothing happened.
He waited another ten seconds, then frowned.
"System, shouldn’t it have started by now?"
[Yes.]
"Then why the hell is—"
He stopped.
Something was wrong with the pharmacy window.
The glass reflected the building across the street, but instead of the brick walls and modern windows actually standing there, Lin Yan saw black stone, crooked timber, and narrow windows glowing beneath a dark sky.
He looked directly across the street, then back at the reflection.
"Captain."
Reeves followed his gaze just as the entire street lost power.
Traffic lights, storefronts, streetlamps, and the distant hospital went dark at once. The team’s portable floodlights came on seconds later, and under their harsh white light the reflected world began bleeding into the real one.
Black timber appeared through brick. Modern windows narrowed into old wooden frames. Asphalt gave way to wet stone as unfamiliar walls and iron lamps emerged through the street around them. Fog thickened rapidly, and through it Lin Yan could just make out dark towers rising from the upper floors of the hospital where nothing had existed before.
The transformation lasted less than a minute.
When it stopped, Fairmont was still recognizable, but another place had been forced into it. Streets, buildings, and even distances no longer matched the town they had evacuated.
Static burst through the radio.
"—Relay Three to command, do you copy?"
Reeves keyed his radio. "Relay Three, this is entry lead. Go."
"We’re inside the affected area. Repeat, we’re inside."
"Confirm position."
"Original position. North relay."
One of the operators checked the deployment map.
"Two point six kilometers from the hospital."
Before anyone could respond, another voice broke through the static.
"Relay Six to command. We’ve been pulled in too. Our position hasn’t changed, but nothing around us matches the map anymore."
The operator beside Reeves checked the deployment map.
"Relay Six was three kilometers south."
Reeves looked out into the fog.
"At least three kilometers."
The original projection had been two kilometers. The civilians were already out, but the support teams stationed beyond the evacuation zone weren’t. Medical crews, relay posts, engineers, and security personnel had just been dragged in with everything else.
Reeves keyed his radio again.
"All entry personnel, original operation is suspended. Nobody pushes deeper. We establish here, locate the teams caught inside, and bring them back. Rescue takes priority."
The group immediately began reorganizing around the new order.
Lin Yan looked into the fog covering the street.
Then the System appeared.
[Task 1 issued.]
[Reward: 100,000 Points.]
[Destroy the Convergence Anchor.]
Lin Yan stared at the reward, and the hand gripping the M2A1 began to tremble slightly.
"System... I’m not hallucinating, am I? Why the fuck are there five zeros?"
[You read it correctly.]
Before Lin Yan could say anything else—
WHUM—
A violent wave of air slammed down into the street, forcing everyone to duck.
Lin Yan lowered his head instinctively, then immediately looked up.
The fog above the rooftops had been torn open. Through the shifting gap, he caught the outline of something enormous sweeping across the sky—a long body, a trailing tail, and two vast wings disappearing into the mist.
Lin Yan’s eyes went wide.
"THAT’S A FUCKING DRAGON?!"
