But Lin Yan wasn’t some meathead who’d charge into the tiger’s den knowing exactly what was waiting for him.

Besides, finding these people wasn’t why he’d come here in the first place. If the road ahead was obviously a setup, there was no reason to keep playing along. Better to get back to the real business.

The information he’d gotten from the Trait earlier was already enough for him to suspect that whatever method the Church had for dealing with the Dragon was probably connected to the Saintess—and there was a good chance that method was Lucia herself.

But suspicion was one thing. He sure as hell couldn’t say that out loud. Not yet.

The five knights had kept Lucia protected in the middle of their group almost the entire way here. If he suddenly asked, "So your Saintess is basically something you use to kill Dragon, right?" that wouldn’t be a question anymore. He’d be laying everything he knew right on the table. He might not even get an answer before they started guarding themselves against him.

As for the missing people in the Church, Lin Yan didn’t particularly care about them, but he had no intention of saying that to their faces. These five knights clearly cared about them, especially the old knight. There was no reason to deliberately twist the knife right now.

"This is as far as we go."

The old knight whipped around. Of course he understood what Lin Yan really meant—forget about the people inside.

Even in the dim light, the anger darkening his face was impossible to miss.

"What do you mean?"

Lin Yan walked straight up to him and met his stare without giving an inch.

"Take me to get that thing you mentioned before. The one that can deal with the Dragon."

The anger on the old knight’s face deepened.

"Do you have any idea who those people in there are?!"

His voice had begun to tremble slightly, despite how hard he was trying to keep his emotions under control.

Lin Yan’s gaze remained completely calm.

"Lead the way."

The two of them simply stared at each other, neither willing to back down.

Lin Yan knew exactly why the old man was furious. After spending this much time with him, he’d gotten a decent read on the man’s personality. He’d clearly spent years in a position of authority, and he had the ability to back it up. He had high standards, a proud temperament, and probably couldn’t even be bothered to spare a second glance at people he didn’t respect. But once he truly accepted someone as one of his own, that was a completely different story.

Lin Yan could also make a pretty good guess at how much the people here meant to him.

The old man’s armor was clearly in a different league from that of the other four knights. The craftsmanship and decoration were both far more elaborate, and his breastplate and pauldrons bore conspicuous religious markings. In a place like this, where the Church was so closely tied to power, even an idiot could tell his status was high.

Someone who held a position like that and had been here for who knew how many years couldn’t possibly see the people in this Church as nothing more than ordinary subordinates. A good number of them were probably people who’d been at his side for years. Calling them family wouldn’t be much of an exaggeration.

And that was exactly why Lin Yan couldn’t give in.

"I said, lead the way."

The old knight stared at Lin Yan for several seconds, the anger on his face finally breaking through whatever restraint he had left.

"Move."

Lin Yan didn’t.

The next instant, one of the young knights drew his sword.

The blade had barely cleared its sheath when Lin Yan was already in front of him. No one saw how he’d moved. There was only a dull impact, and the knight slammed into the stone wall beside him, his sword flying from his hand.

The other three rushed him almost at the same time.

Lin Yan didn’t even move his feet.

The first swung his sword down. Lin Yan slipped aside, then drove a kick into his breastplate, sending him crashing backward into the man behind him and taking them both to the floor. The last knight had barely made it within reach when Lin Yan backhanded him across the face, knocking him sideways into a stone pillar.

The man had barely hit the floor when the old knight’s blade was already at Lin Yan’s face.

He was clearly much faster than the other four. The blade was on Lin Yan almost instantly. Lin Yan didn’t retreat an inch. He simply reached up, clamped a hand around the knight’s sword arm, and stopped the strike dead in midair.

The old knight’s pupils contracted. Before he could even react, his vision blurred—and Lin Yan’s fist was already buried in the center of his breastplate. A dull metallic bang rang out as the thick armor caved inward.

The punch sent him hurtling backward. His back smashed into the stone wall before he dropped hard to the floor.

"God above... what kind of monster is this guy?" For several seconds, the old knight couldn’t get any air. Then a violent coughing fit hit him, each breath sending pain through his chest. Even so, he gritted his teeth, braced himself against the floor, and struggled to push himself back up.

Before he could, Lin Yan was already standing over him, one boot planted squarely on his chest.

The heavy sole pressed down on the dented breastplate. The old knight tried to struggle, but Lin Yan put more weight into his foot and forced him flat again.

"Have I been too fucking nice to you?"

Lin Yan pressed down harder. The caved-in breastplate let out a teeth-grating creak.

"I’ve talked to you this long because I felt like it."

"You really think you get to tell me no?"
