Lin Yan stared at the stone coffin the M2 had torn apart. The strange sound was still coming from inside, faint and intermittent.

Hummm—

The sound was low and drawn out, as if it had traveled from somewhere impossibly far away, carrying the lingering resonance of a massive bell. Lin Yan listened for a few seconds before something Lucia had said earlier suddenly flashed through his mind.

The bell?

He looked toward Lucia.

Lucia was already staring at the stone coffin, confusion plain on her pale face.

Don’t tell me this is what she’s been hearing.

Before Lin Yan could think any further, a faint white glow appeared inside the coffin.

At first, it was only a thin strand seeping out through the shattered lid and bullet holes. More light soon rose from the cracks in the stone, gathering above the coffin. The gathered light slowly lengthened and drew together, taking on a roughly human shape.

Lin Yan found himself staring at the face as it gradually came into focus, unable to look away.

It was impossible to pin down an age or even a sex from that face. Every feature seemed impossibly refined, as though the finest parts of countless different faces had somehow been blended into one. The face was completely unfamiliar, yet somehow familiar at the same time, as though anyone who looked at it could find something there that matched their own idea of perfection.

The translucent figure simply hovered above the coffin. Lin Yan stared at it for a moment, and only one word came to mind.

God.

By the time he tore his gaze away from that face, he was already halfway to his knees.

He looked down. His right knee was only inches from the floor, and his body was still trying to sink lower.

His expression changed. The clarity from Willpower II crushed the urge to kneel, and he forced himself back upright.

When he looked to the side, the old knight and the younger knight were already on both knees. Their heads were bowed, hands clasped over their chests, lips moving continuously. Their faces were lost in reverence, as though the being they had worshiped all their lives were finally standing before them.

Lucia was still standing. Her face had gone nearly bloodless, one hand clutching the fabric over her chest, but her eyes remained fixed on the figure hovering above the coffin.

The figure slowly opened its mouth.

Hummm—

The low vibration rolled through the chamber again.

This time it was closer. Lin Yan could hear a definite rhythm beneath the vibration, but the words themselves remained incomprehensible. Lucia trembled slightly at the sound, her eyes widening as she stared at the figure.

Lin Yan looked between her and the figure in the air, and the answer to his suspicion was already becoming obvious.

The "bell" Lucia had been hearing all this time probably wasn’t a bell at all. She had simply never encountered anything like this before and had no way to describe a sound that seemed to act directly on the mind, so she had interpreted it as something familiar—a bell.

Fortunately, Lin Yan now had a Trait that could deal with exactly this kind of thing.

[White Trait — Valerian Common] was removed from its slot, and [Green Trait — Grave Whisper] immediately took its place.

The meaning buried inside the buzzing became clear.

"...Finally... found you..."

"...Come back..."

Lin Yan frowned.

Grave Whisper let him understand the sounds, but the thing in front of him didn’t seem interested in any kind of normal conversation. What came through was fragmented and repetitive, more like an instinctive response than deliberate speech.

"...Vessel..."

Lin Yan’s grip tightened around the M2.

The figure was already drifting toward Lucia. He stepped forward on instinct, already reaching out, when a thought abruptly cut through the motion.

...Why am I doing this?

Lin Yan hesitated.

The figure had already floated past him.

Lin Yan reached out to stop it, but his fingers passed straight through the apparition.

The translucent figure continued forward, passing through Lin Yan’s arm before sinking into Lucia’s body. The last trace of white light vanished, and the low buzzing from the coffin stopped with it.

Lin Yan suddenly stopped, his hand still hanging in midair as cold sweat began to run down his back.

What the fuck was I doing?

Only then did the absurdity of his own reaction hit him. That thing had nearly forced him to his knees just by appearing, and he had no idea what it was or what it could do. Yet the moment it moved, he had reached for it without thinking.

That wasn’t how he usually made decisions.

The thought pulled several other things into focus at once, especially what had happened with the Archbishop. The man had barely started speaking before Lin Yan filled in the rest himself, treated a pile of guesses like confirmed facts, and opened fire.

The first real proof had come only moments ago, when that thing called Lucia a vessel.

Lin Yan’s pupils contracted.

A moment ago, everything he had done had felt perfectly natural. Looking back now, he had been jumping to conclusions far too easily, as though something had been nudging his judgment in one direction without ever making itself felt.

...Something’s been messing with my head.

Before he could follow that thought any further, an intense sense of foreboding suddenly rose in his chest.

Lin Yan looked up.

Lucia was still standing where she had been, her eyes closed, with no obvious change to her appearance. Yet the moment Lin Yan looked at her, every instinct in his body seemed to tighten.

Something was wrong.

Her eyelids moved.

Then she opened her eyes.

Lin Yan’s expression froze.

It was still Lucia’s face, but the moment those eyes settled on him, he knew.

That wasn’t Lucia.

The gaze lingered on him for only a moment before her right hand rose, palm facing directly toward him.

A brilliant white light gathered in her hand.
