"Calm down." Cao Yong tightly grabbed her, first observing the condition of the nearby slope.
Ren Chongda, following behind, shouted, "Only cross when it’s safe."
Even as he spoke, another set of small stones tumbled down the slope, the rustling sound of sliding earth intimidating anyone who wanted to approach the accident site to help.
Many enthusiastic passersby could only help by first calling the fire department and police for assistance. One or two daring individuals rushed into the accident scene, yet some injured were stuck in the driver’s cabin or the vehicle, making it impossible to pull them out. Others didn’t know how to handle the injured and dared not pull them out forcefully, hoping for medical staff to be present.
In total, five vehicles were hit and broke down on the road. The worst was one of them being a minibus, estimated to have many injured inside.
Once the landslide subsided and the mountain stabilized a bit more, more brave people rushed in to help with rescues. Common folks had the simple idea of saving as many people as possible before professional rescuers arrived. One couldn’t just stand by and watch these people die, but at least move them to a safe spot.
"Xie Wanying, please come save me first. They haven’t come to save me—" Zhang Wei cried and shouted over the phone, her desperation and anxiety imaginable as she was trapped inside the car, watching a group of rescuers pass by in front of her.
Someone in the minibus called for help, "This vehicle is full of children. They are students and teachers from the City First Elementary School."
Things turned serious. These students encountered Death God while returning from a social activity led by their teachers. City First Elementary was one of the distinguished schools in the city, and the students inside were all future stars. The adults, only hearing the children, rushed to save them first, leaving other vehicles and their injured to make way for the kids.
"They haven’t come to save me; they haven’t come to save me—" Zhang Wei cried uncontrollably, overwhelmed by massive fear, truly feeling she’d been abandoned and was going to die, "Xie Wanying!"
Her voice on the phone was clearly on the verge of a breakdown. Not everyone can calmly make way for others’ lives. Fear of death is a primal human reaction.
Xie Wanying steeled her mind, not running with the main group to the minibus, but instead turning around and quickly heading towards that familiar silver sedan.
Trapped inside the car, Zhang Wei saw her approaching and finally didn’t need to shout through the phone.
Reaching the car’s side, Xie Wanying bent down to first check the condition of those trapped inside.
Zhang Wei sat in the passenger seat, her left leg stuck in the crevice between the deformed car front and the seat, unable to pull it free. She was disheveled and drenched in sweat from anxiety.
The man in the driver’s seat had long passed out, his head resting motionlessly against the steering wheel.
Terrified by the driver’s condition, Zhang Wei was nearly hysterical, screaming and shouting irrationally. No one wants to stay beside a dead body. Having a dead person nearby would drive even an injured person mad.
"Open the door and pull me out," Zhang Wei anxiously said inside the car.
Xie Wanying attempted to pull down the driver’s side door with both hands.
The door was deformed, its lock stuck and wouldn’t open. The first attempt failed; gathering her strength, Xie Wanying prepared to muster all her force for a second try. A pair of hands stretched from behind, gripping the car handle to pull it with her.
With a bang, even Zhang Wei, trapped inside, was startled, not expecting their combined strength to be so great. The car door was yanked off entirely, falling to the ground with a clang.
