Chapter 139 Lich Fight 02

Silk’s Point of View

“SARAH!” I struck at the Lich’s shield again; whatever magic he was using to protect himself was strong enough to shrug off even my most powerful strike. He was only low enough to attack for a single moment, then the dragon stood back up. Tears formed in my eyes as I looked at her, blood pouring from her mouth as she managed to get out. “God, that fucking hurt. Feels like my organs just turned to liquid.”

She pulled out a potion and chugged it down before saying. “Don’t get hit by two of those in a row. I think we can only tank one of those beams without dying.” Sarah got right back into it, as if she didn’t just almost die; her insane endurance stat was the only reason she wasn’t killed outright. But I could see it in her attacks. Her arms were already shaking; as much as she wanted to help, she would only be a hindrance if she was targeted again.

The lich spoke in a monotone voice. “Oh? She must be the tank; that is the only thing that explains why she could take the death bolt. I’ll toss another in her direction before I deal with the rest of you.” I yelled out to her. “Sarah! Get in the underground bunker. If you get hit by the lich, retreat!” He aimed at her, but as she retreated, his attack missed, striking the ground as the earth began to blacken and turn to dust.

I knew the lich was the main target, but we couldn’t hit him while he was in the air. My target then switched to the dragon. Without taking him down first, it would be too difficult to hit him, and even if we did do enough damage, he could always just fly away unless we dealt with the dragon.

“I’ll take down the dragon; everyone else but Tems works on the other fliers. Tems, you’re on distraction duty until we get rid of most of these other enemies; just don’t let the Lich do whatever he wants.” “Got it!” She stopped launching her throwing daggers as she pulled out her real weapons and rushed underneath the dragon, grabbing its leg before it flew into the air.

I could hear her cackle as they both flew into the sky. I cut through another three wyverns as I kept an eye on the dragon carrying the lich. They flew down again. I wasn’t sure if the undead dragon had a breath attack or not, but he hadn’t used it yet. I could still hear Tems mocking him. “Better keep an eye on me, Deadman, or I’ll sneak up on you and rub shit all over your head. HAHAHA!”

What would have unnerved another, the lich ignored as he took aim and cast again. The beam was moving faster than an arrow and targeting one of the few of us who wasn’t paying much attention to him. Cherry was struck, vomiting blood, and she looked far more weakened by the beam. She barely managed to crawl into the tunnels as the lich and dragon landed again.

Tems was pissed now, but she knew what the real threat was as well. As I rushed over to meet the dragon, I saw her make her move. A special, once-a-day skill was used that allowed her to form an empowered slash. Instead of targeting the lich who had a shield, she targeted the dragon, specifically the dragon's wings. It struck off its skeletal wings and…

What would normally dig in several inches barely left a scratch on them. I knew that her special attack was weakened, but I didn’t realize it was to that degree against high-defense opponents. Most of her attacks were like that, barely leaving behind any marks on the dragon as she needed to dig her daggers in to avoid a beam from the lich. She was possibly the only one fast enough to act if the lich targeted her. The dragon didn’t feel it, and it appeared to be controlled by the lich. So when he was focused on her, so was the dragon.

Most of the aerial army was dealt with at this point. Cherry managed to get another one of her empowered blasts off before she was struck, and they had to fly down to attack us. The wyverns were a little harder to kill, but the drakes could be taken down easily enough by everyone. As I was thinking of how to deal with the dragon, Millicent yelled out.

“Tems! Hold your breath!” Before I could even think of why she would need to, a potion struck the dragon. I hadn’t thought anyone else could deal with the flying problem, but as the wings dissolved and fell off, I couldn’t believe she had something to deal with it. I smiled as I spoke. “Yes! Alright, now we’re-” I dodged a beam he launched. It turns out I was also fast enough, and since my eyes were always on him, I could predict if he was going to attack me.

He looked pissed, and the acid Milly flung had done more damage than what was done to the wings. It was finally looking up as Tems slammed off his shield, almost knocking him off the dragon, before she was flung off as well. What I thought was the endgame was only the start of the fight, as the lich abandoned his dragon and began to fly in the air.

His beams came down with far more accuracy, as now that they were two targets, the giant skeleton dragon could distract them, and they could be hurt by the dragon, so they had to pay attention to it. I made a decision right then; we needed to split them up. “Everyone, into the tunnels. I’ll take out the dragon!” I heard an inhaling sound as I watched the dragon breathe in.

It had no lungs; what it was doing didn’t make sense, but it was still happening. It wasn’t a breath, but a life-draining attack, and I watched as its destroyed back and some of its wings reformed as the undead around it began to shrivel and fall apart. I yelled out again. “GO! Get inside; this thing is too dangerous to fight with a big group!”

The lich launched a barrage of attacks, some landing on the girls as they retreated. With one last look, he spoke to me directly. “Heh, I think you’re in over your head. You sacrificing your life to buy time for them won't work; you’ll die fighting that dragon.” With that, he flew into one of the openings. I could still hear him attack before it faded out.

All of the other undead were fully dead now, and it was just the dragon and me. I fought ferociously, but just like Tems, my sword barely dealt any real damage, and when I did start to make headway, the dragon would just breathe in and heal the damage, and even more of its wings. It seemed to be on a cooldown, and I doubted the siphon life attack was endless, but I needed to end it before finding out. That’s when I saw it.

Sarah had left her multitool behind, and while it wasn’t as strong as my swords, it could become a better weapon for smashing bone. Rushing to it, I dodged under the dragon and picked it up. Swapping weapons wouldn’t affect me that much, as my class mainly focused on strengthening me and not the type of weapon I was good with. I chose the sword because of preference.

Finally, I could use my own special attack. The dragon came down, trying to siphon life from me as it left its head vulnerable. One attack landed, then another, then another even faster. My attacks began to speed up as I swung faster and faster. The skill I gained from reaching level one hundred in the uncommon rarity came into play as I swung the massive hammer as if it weighed nothing. Loud clanging sounds rang out until its skull began to crack and break apart under the flurry of blows. The dragon fell to the ground lifeless, just as Sarah’s weapon broke in my hands.

I didn’t even have the time to catch my breath before an explosion big enough to shake me came from underground. I felt myself grow stronger at that moment, and the worry I had over what was happening below faded. I caught my breath before heading inside the tunnel system as well. By the time I reached the fighting, it would most likely be over.
