Fat and Ugly Villainess Wins Back Her Five Beast Husband
Chapter 36: Sleeping ArrangementsFor several long seconds no one spoke.
Sora looked between them in confusion.
"What?"
"You all look strange."
Lucas rubbed his forehead.
"...Don’t you think..."
"This arrangement is..."
He struggled to find polite wording.
"...inappropriate?"
Sora blinked.
"Inappropriate?"
She genuinely didn’t understand.
"We’re just sleeping."
"It’s not like there’s another place."
Her straightforward logic completely dismantled every objection before it could be spoken.
Ace scratched his cheek awkwardly.
It wasn’t that Sora was wrong.
There really wasn’t anywhere else.
If there had been a cave, they’d gladly sleep separately.
If there had been large trees, Lucas could roost in the branches.
If there had been boulders, Xavier would’ve rested on top of one.
Unfortunately...
There was nothing.
Only grass.
Lucas groaned dramatically.
"What terrible luck..."
"If anyone from the tribe saw this..."
He didn’t even want to imagine the rumors.
He still remembered Kaelira’s previous reputation.
Before her recent changes, she had relentlessly chased after every one of her husbands.
She had climbed into beds uninvited.
Thrown tantrums.
Demanded affection.
Created endless trouble.
Even though she’d changed dramatically over the past month...
Old impressions were difficult to erase.
Sleeping beside her...
It still made Lucas nervous.
"What if she rolls over?"
he muttered.
"What if she hugs someone in her sleep?"
Ace couldn’t help laughing.
"You’re overthinking."
Lucas shot him an annoyed look.
"Am I?"
"You’ve forgotten how she used to be."
Ace fell silent.
...He hadn’t.
None of them had.
Sora watched their strange conversation with growing impatience.
"So?"
"Have you decided?"
Lucas crossed his arms stubbornly.
"I refuse."
Sora merely looked at him calmly.
"Then what do you suggest?"
"I..."
Lucas opened his mouth.
Then closed it again.
There really wasn’t another solution.
He looked hopefully toward Ace.
Ace immediately pretended to examine the fire.
He looked toward Xavier.
Xavier quietly stared at the ground.
Neither intended to rescue him.
Lucas sighed dramatically.
"Traitors..."
The discussion dragged on until Sora yawned.
She covered her mouth politely.
"I’m tired."
"You three can keep debating."
"I’m sleeping."
She walked toward a patch of soft grass she’d noticed earlier.
Before leaving home that morning, she’d wisely packed one of the thick fur blankets they’d made together.
Originally she’d intended to use it as a picnic mat during breaks.
Now it became the perfect bed.
She spread it carefully across the grass.
The soft fur instantly covered the uneven ground.
Much better.
She stretched her stiff shoulders before sitting down.
Behind her, the three beastmen watched silently.
None of them moved.
Sora glanced over her shoulder.
"Aren’t you coming?"
The simple invitation produced three completely different reactions.
Xavier looked conflicted.
Ace frowned with obvious internal struggle.
Lucas wore an expression caught somewhere between horror and embarrassment.
No one answered.
Sora waited a few moments.
When they still remained frozen in place, she simply shrugged.
"Suit yourselves."
She lay down on the blanket.
After an entire day of climbing mountains, digging salt, collecting clay, shaping pottery, and tending fires, exhaustion washed over her almost instantly.
Her eyelids became heavy.
The three beastmen remained standing around the campfire.
After watching Sora drift peacefully to sleep, Xavier, Ace, and Lucas exchanged uncertain glances.
She had deliberately chosen the outer edge of the fur blanket, leaving plenty of room beside her. If one of them slept in the middle, the remaining two would be safely separated from her.
Unfortunately, all three beastmen had arrived at exactly the same conclusion.
No one wanted to volunteer.
For several long moments, the three remained frozen in place, silently waiting for someone else to make the first move.
Meanwhile, Sora, who had closed her eyes in hopes of getting some rest, found shadows constantly shifting across her eyelids. Their hesitation made it impossible for her to fall asleep.
With an exasperated sigh, she opened one eye.
"What are you three doing?"
No answer.
She looked from one man to another before finally understanding.
"...Seriously?"
The corners of her mouth twitched.
"So that’s what you’re worried about."
Without another complaint, Sora scooted farther toward the edge of the blanket, creating as much distance as possible between herself and the empty space beside her.
Then she pointed toward the animal-skin sacks.
"Bring the salt over."
The three exchanged puzzled looks.
"The salt?"
She nodded.
"You don’t want to sleep next to me, right? Then use the salt as a divider."
Understanding dawned immediately.
Lucas was the first to pick up his heavy sack of coarse salt. Xavier and Ace quickly followed, carrying their own bundles over.
Sora arranged the three bags in a straight line between herself and the beastmen, forming a clear boundary that almost resembled a tiny wall.
Satisfied, she dusted off her hands.
"There."
She yawned loudly before continuing.
"Now everyone can sleep without worrying. I won’t cross this line."
As soon as she finished speaking, she almost laughed.
The neat barrier reminded her strangely of the demilitarized zone between two countries from her previous world.
Who would have thought she’d one day use bags of salt as an international border?
Suppressing another chuckle, she wrapped herself in the fur blanket and closed her eyes again.
The atmosphere relaxed almost immediately.
The three beastmen visibly loosened their tense expressions.
Lucas even nodded in approval.
"This... actually works."
To be safe, Ace gathered several thorny branches from nearby bushes and arranged them around their sleeping area to discourage wild animals from wandering too close during the night.
Only after everything had been prepared did the three finally settle down.
Naturally, none of them slept in human form.
Xaiver transformed into his enormous serpent form and quietly coiled himself into one corner.
Ace shifted into a sleek white Tiger, curling comfortably in the middle.
Lucas became his magnificent phoneix, folding his broad wings against his body as he rested nearby.
The crackling campfire illuminated the quiet clearing with a warm orange glow.
Behind them, the pottery continued firing beneath layers of glowing embers.
Above, countless stars filled the primitive world’s night sky.
It was peaceful.
Occasionally distant howls echoed through the forest, accompanied by the chirping of insects and the rustling of leaves.
To the three beastmen, those sounds might mean danger.
To Sora...
They had long since become her lullaby.
Ever since arriving in this primitive world, she had learned to sleep through every strange cry the wilderness produced.
Within minutes, her breathing became slow and even.
A faint snore escaped her lips.
Lucas blinked.
"...She’s really asleep."
Xavier twitched an ear.
"I thought we’d have to take turns keeping watch."
Ace lifted his head slightly before looking toward Sora.
"Doesn’t seem necessary."
She hadn’t moved even once.
Instead of trying to sneak closer to any of them—as the old Kaelira undoubtedly would have—she had remained quietly on her own side of the salt barrier.
Eventually, the three beastmen relaxed completely.
Perhaps...
She really had changed.
With that thought, they allowed themselves to drift into sleep as well.
