Chapter 90: Chapter 90: Infuriating Generosity

Cassiel answered lazily, "I’ll rest a little longer."

Elysia nodded before getting out of bed.

She had only just begun changing her clothes when Miriam’s flustered voice came from outside.

"Miss Rennor! You can’t simply barge in—"

Before Miriam could finish speaking, Adela strode confidently into the outer room.

Miriam hurried in after her, looking both apologetic and embarrassed.

Elysia gave her a reassuring smile.

"It’s all right."

The moment Adela saw Elysia, her face lit up.

"Your Grace!"

She hurried over and affectionately reached for Elysia’s hands.

"I’ve come to pay my respects!"

Even while speaking...

Her eyes repeatedly wandered towards the inner bedchamber.

"Hm? Where’s Cassiel?"

Elysia maintained her gentle smile.

"He returned from the palace rather late last night—"

"I know."

Adela interrupted without hesitation.

"He escorted Mother and me home. By then, it was already very late. I asked him to stay for the night, but he insisted he had to go to the palace. I was worried about him, so later I sent someone to enquire. They said he only stayed at the palace briefly before returning to the manor."

Elysia quietly observed her.

Adela’s gaze slowly swept over her from head to toe.

"Your Grace... Have you only just woken up?"

She smiled innocently.

"That’s rather late. Draevenor Manor is so large. There must be countless matters waiting for you every morning. You really ought to rise earlier."

Elysia’s smile remained unchanged.

She calmly finished the sentence Adela had interrupted earlier.

"He returned from the palace very late. He’s still resting."

She paused before adding gently, "After he returned... I naturally had to look after him. So of course I slept a little later."

She smiled warmly.

"But Miss Rennor is still unmarried. You probably wouldn’t understand."

Adela froze.

A sharp pang of jealousy twisted inside her heart.

She was unmarried.

But she wasn’t ignorant.

Her mother had already explained such matters to her.

Besides, she had secretly read enough romantic novels to understand perfectly well what Elysia was implying.

Although Cassiel had returned very late, he had still spent the night with his Duchess.

That was why Elysia had slept in this morning.

Adela’s smile instantly became rather forced.

Her grip on Elysia’s hands loosened.

Taking advantage of the moment, Elysia gently withdrew her hands.

"Miss Rennor. Please have some tea first. I’ll join you shortly."

Miriam immediately stepped forward.

"This way, Miss Rennor."

Adela bit her lip.

Clearly discouraged by Elysia’s words, she silently followed Miriam out of the room.

Only after she had left did Elysia quietly breathe a sigh of relief.

She turned and returned to the bedchamber.

The moment she stepped inside...

A low chuckle reached her ears.

The rich, magnetic laughter belonged to Cassiel.

He had clearly heard every word she had said.

Elysia’s cheeks instantly turned crimson.

Summoning her courage, she slowly approached the bed and lifted one corner of the curtain.

Cassiel looked at her with a faint smile lingering at the corners of his lips.

He said nothing.

Yet somehow...

It felt as though he had said everything.

Unable to meet his gaze, Elysia awkwardly looked away.

Then she quietly spoke.

"My lord... I have a question."

Cassiel’s amusement deepened.

"Go on. What would you like to ask?"

Elysia took a steadying breath.

"I want to know... What exactly are your feelings towards Miss Rennor?"

Cassiel raised an eyebrow.

"My feelings?"

Elysia nodded earnestly.

"Do you care for her simply because you feel responsible for Lieutenant Rennor and his family? Or..."

She hesitated briefly.

"Do you have romantic feelings for her?"

Her expression remained completely sincere.

"If you truly care for her... I’ll naturally treat her with greater consideration. When the time is right... I could even arrange for her to enter the household—"

Before she could finish speaking...

Cassiel suddenly covered her mouth.

Those soft lips...

How could they keep uttering such infuriating words?

Elysia blinked at him in confusion.

What’s wrong?

Cassiel looked directly into her eyes.

"If I liked her... You would personally bring her into my household?"

Unable to speak, Elysia could only nod.

Seeing her response, Cassiel asked again, "You’d even make her the Duchess?"

Elysia nodded once more.

Cassiel laughed softly.

The laughter carried obvious exasperation.

Elysia only looked more bewildered.

Why is he upset again?

Cassiel slowly enunciated every single word.

"I. Do. Not. Like. Her."

Only then did Elysia slowly nod.

So...

Adela wasn’t the mysterious woman everyone had been gossiping about either.

Cassiel finally removed his hand.

"My turn."

Elysia rubbed her slightly numb lips.

"What is it?"

Cassiel held her gaze.

"If one day Adela begged you... Asking to become my concubine... What would you do?"

Elysia immediately smiled reassuringly.

"But... You’ve already said you don’t like her. So naturally I would refuse."

A satisfied snort escaped Cassiel.

"Finally... You’ve said something I actually like."

Elysia blinked.

Then she cautiously suggested,

"If you’re still worried... You could come with me. You can watch for yourself."

Cassiel’s expression softened.

"I trust you."

Elysia didn’t insist any further.

She lowered the bed curtain before washing and dressing herself.

---

By the time she arrived at the reception hall, she discovered Adela wasn’t alone.

Beside her sat an elegantly dressed middle-aged woman.

She carried herself with quiet dignity.

This was clearly Madam Rennor, Lieutenant Rennor’s wife.

At that very moment, Madam Rennor appeared to be quietly reprimanding her daughter.

From the fragments Elysia overheard, Adela had accompanied her mother to Draevenor Manor.

However, the moment they arrived, she had impulsively abandoned her mother and rushed straight to Elysia’s courtyard alone.
