Jenna:

He cleaned himself and began getting dressed.

I climbed out of the river and got dressed as well.

Then I walked back and sat on the mattress, expecting us to eat something together.

Before leaving the house, I had packed a few sandwiches.

Instead, he snapped his fingers.

"Come on. I have to drop you home," he called after stepping into the darkness.

"I thought we’d have something to eat. It’s okay. They won’t notice," I said, gesturing for him to come back and join me.

"Come on. Let’s go. You know Jaguar gets up early for a jog. I don’t want him to spot you on the road while you’re heading home," he replied.

His voice sounded different.

Maybe it was because he was standing farther away, or maybe the sound of the river was distorting it.

I didn’t want to push him to stay. I was afraid he’d think I was being clingy.

It was just saddening because it wasn’t even late.

I left the mansion around 9 or something.

So I gave up, got to my feet, and followed him into the darkness.

I expected him to at least walk me to the road where the car was waiting.

Instead, he stayed in the shadows and simply pointed towards it.

I turned back and hugged him.

"Come on, what are you doing, Jenna? Go. You’ll be late," he said, immediately slipping out of my embrace.

For the first time, I wondered whether I had done something wrong.

Had he not enjoyed today?

His behaviour felt a little strange.

I climbed into the car, and throughout the drive home, I fought back tears because I couldn’t shake the fear that I had upset him.

I was almost in tears, sniffling the entire way.

Then, when I arrived, I saw a car pulling away.

It was an ambulance.

The car was already a good distance away, so I couldn’t tell whether it had come from Stone Mansion or somewhere else.

The minute my car came to a stop, I jumped out and rushed inside.

I sprinted to the back window of my room, climbed through it, and quietly shut it behind me.

I’d barely set foot on the floor when a loud knock echoed through the door.

My heart skipped a beat.

I froze completely, not even thinking about changing my clothes.

Then another loud knock hit the door.

"Jenna!" I thought as her voice broke me out of my daze.

"Shit," I muttered under my breath, looking around anxiously.

My white nightdress was lying on the couch.

I hurried over, quickly stripped out of my clothes, pulled on the white nightdress, and shoved my other clothes into the closet.

All the while, my mother kept pounding on the door, yelling for me to open it.

I didn’t understand what had happened.

I’d told her I was going to study.

Why the heck was she banging on the door like that?

As if something had gone terribly wrong.

I scattered my books across the bed, then opened the door, running my hands through my hair to ruffle it.

"What is it?" I asked my mother, letting out a fake yawn.

My father stood right behind her.

They both looked extremely worried.

That made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

"Why weren’t you opening the door?" my mother demanded, her expression filled with concern.

"I was studying, and I guess I dozed off," I replied, forcing another yawn, feeling guilty for putting on an act in front of my parents.

"We would’ve just let you sleep, but we had to tell you what was going on," my father said, stepping forward and gently moving my mother aside.

"What do you mean something’s going on? What’s going on?" I asked my father as he stepped into my room.

However, I noticed my mother’s behaviour was a little different.

The moment she entered my room, her eyes lingered around as if she were looking for something.

I immediately went on high alert.

"Well, the ambulance came and left, and you just kept sleeping," my mother replied, taking control of the conversation again.

"Oh," I murmured.

"Why was the ambulance here?" I asked softly before realisation hit me.

"Wait–" I stuttered. "Is Grandma okay?" My heart skipped a beat.

For a moment, it felt as though this was my punishment for breaking my promise to Grandma.

My father immediately took my hand, trying to calm me down.

"Of course she’s okay. It’s Ragnar," he answered.

"I think—" My father paused. "I think he had a heart attack."

My mind went blank at the news.

I stood there, frozen.

"Don’t worry. He’s been taken to the hospital. The doctors are examining him, and we’ll know soon what happened," my father explained, gently patting my arm.

"Gigi passed out from the shock too," he added.

"Wait. Gigi was at home?" I asked in confusion.

"Yeah and she is at the hospital too. Don’t worry, okay? Go on and get some sleep." My father patted my cheek before walking out of the room.

However, my mother stayed behind.

"Where have you been?" my mother began sharply.

Before I could ask her anything about Ragnar or Gigi, she was already firing questions at me.

"I was at home," I replied.

My mother’s eyes narrowed at me.

"I saw you arrive wearing a long coat from the balcony, so you fucking better not lie to me."

The moment she said that, I realised that, of course, everyone had been awake.

She had seen me.

Guilt immediately washed over me.

"I just stepped out briefly to get notes from a friend."

I was in the middle of speaking when my mother’s hand struck my cheek.

I didn’t move, but the slap was so hard it made my entire world spin.

I immediately stopped talking, lowering my gaze as tears filled my eyes.

"Then you should’ve talked to me instead of fucking sneaking out like a culprit. And where the fuck are those notes, huh?" my mother snapped.

I hadn’t even responded to her when her phone rang.

It was Theodore.

From what I could hear, he was asking my mother whether I had made it home safely.

All the anger and worry I’d been holding onto slowly faded when I realised that, despite everything that was happening, he was still thinking about whether I’d made it home safely.
