Verity:
It looked like she was trying to hide it from me, even though I was sitting right in front of her.
"Oh—"
Gigi made a thoughtful sound.
I kept watching her.
Normally, Gigi would never change her plans for anyone.
But this time, she nodded.
"Okay. Fine."
As soon as she agreed, I bit the inside of my cheek.
So Jenna was trying to sneak out by using us.
That couldn’t be good.
I mean, she was an adult. She could go wherever she wanted.
Still, something about Gigi being involved in it didn’t sit right with me.
"Can we talk?" Jenna asked in a quiet, pleading tone.
Gigi didn’t look like she enjoyed talking to her.
She kept glancing away, but Jenna was persistent.
Something about all of it felt wrong.
At the same time, it felt very suspicious.
"About what, Jenna?" Gigi asked with a slightly forced laugh.
"Oh, by the way, you two talk. I’ll go sit with them. You know Ragnar gets really upset if I don’t spend time with the brothers."
She spoke in a light, raspy voice, fixing her hair before getting up and walking away.
The look on Jenna’s face reminded me of someone who had been completely defeated.
Someone who was losing hope.
"You’re going to sneak out?" I asked.
The moment I spoke, Jenna looked up at me.
The softness she had shown while talking to Gigi disappeared.
"I’m not sneaking out. I’m a grown woman, and I don’t want to upset Lady Lucille. So I’ve decided to go out without telling her. Is there a problem with that?"
The way she rattled off the entire sentence without taking a breath or blinking once made me tilt my head.
"What is going on, Jenna? I know you think I’m the sister of an abusive man, so I don’t deserve any kindness or anything. But you do. You deserve kindness. You deserve respect."
My words seemed to bring her entire world to a halt.
She froze.
Then her lips began to quiver, as though she were whispering something to herself, trying to remind herself of something, or maybe repeating what I had just told her.
But before she reached any conclusion, she shook her head and took a deep breath.
She had convinced herself not to rely on me.
"Nothing’s happening. I’m completely fine. I’m just worried about my dress, that’s all."
There was a bitterness in her voice.
Then she stood up and walked back to Lady Lucille.
Well, I wasn’t naïve.
Not even a little.
But whenever my instincts told me something was wrong, I trusted them.
And right now, they were telling me, loud and clear, that Jenna was in trouble.
My eyes shifted to Gigi.
I didn’t know why, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that she had something to do with all of it.
It couldn’t be a coincidence that every innocent girl who crossed paths with Gigi ended up getting hurt.
Well, if that was the case, then this time I was going to ruin Gigi’s plans.
Later that night, Gigi and I got ready for our dinner outing.
I wore a light gray dress, while she chose a purple one.
When we walked out together, I immediately noticed how we drew everyone’s attention.
Ragnar, Theodore, and Jaguar were all looking at Gigi.
As I stepped out from behind her, I took a deep breath.
"You look amazing," he remarked to Gigi.
Then he turned to me.
He did a double take, and I noticed his jaw practically drop.
Theodore followed his gaze and turned around to look at me.
Gigi’s wide smile began to fade, especially when Ragnar frowned and looked in my direction.
I caught the slightest double take from him.
Ragnar was never expressive. His reactions were always subtle.
But I caught that tiny flicker.
His eyes shifted for only the briefest moment, so quickly that no one else would have noticed.
I did.
Then, almost instantly, he looked back at Gigi.
"You look amazing," he told her, bringing her smile back.
I noticed her take a deep breath before slowly letting it out.
"Thank you," she replied softly.
"Um! So two are going out somewhere?" Jaguar finally seemed to snap back to his senses as he turned to Gigi.
She still wore a smile, but her eyes had started to glisten.
I noticed it because that was what I was supposed to do.
I was supposed to watch everyone around me.
To catch their reactions.
To notice what bothered them.
To see what affected them.
"Yeah, but her phone broke last night, so we decided to get it fixed and have a girls’ dinner while we’re out," Gigi replied with a sweet shrug.
I noticed the brothers immediately softened toward her.
There was a look of admiration in their eyes, as though they appreciated how kind she was being to me.
It made me wonder why.
Then the answer came to me.
Of course.
How could she be so kind and sweet to the sister of her abuser?
That was exactly what she was doing.
Playing multiple games.
She had several plans, just as I did.
One of mine was revenge.
Hers was to keep everyone wrapped around her finger.
"Yeah, that’s really sweet of Gigi," I said.
The moment my voice broke the silence, Jaguar and Theodore immediately turned to look at me.
There was always a hunger in their eyes, as though they wanted to steal my attention.
Then there was Ragnar.
The sound of my voice made his jaw tighten, and I watched his body grow tense.
"Come on, Gigi. Let’s go," I urged.
She smiled at me, waved to Theodore and Jaguar, then walked over to Ragnar.
Rising onto her tiptoes, she kissed him on the cheek.
As she did, he tilted his head, and his eyes met mine.
I looked away.
In a way, I was sure it made Ragnar wonder whether I had gotten jealous.
I left that question hanging in the air as I turned and walked out of the mansion with Gigi by my side.
