Verity:
"But it’s not like I can go and check. I don’t want to tell you something and then have it cause problems between the two of you."
I tugged lightly at my ear, stuck out my tongue playfully, and waved my hand as if to say, ’That would be really bad.’
"Why not?"
Then she said exactly what I’d wanted to hear.
"If I can get you the passcode, would you be able to sneak into the attic and get all those names for me?"
There was determination in her voice as she asked the question.
"Come on, tell me. Can you do it?" Gigi pressed, snapping me out of my thoughts.
The only thing bothering me was what Gigi was actually planning to do.
There was no way she was only trying to find out that woman’s name.
She wasn’t going to stop once she had it.
Then another thought suddenly crossed my mind.
Who was the girl that was Ragnar’s fated mate?
There was no way Ragnar hadn’t felt the mate bond with her.
And if he had, then that meant the girl knew as well.
So why was she just sitting around, doing nothing about it?
Or maybe she’d already gotten in touch with Ragnar.
What if Ragnar, in a twist of events, was cheating on Gigi?
Honestly, that would be the perfect revenge on its own.
My job would become much easier.
After that, I’d only have to deal with them from one side.
Gigi’s part would already be taken care of.
"Verity."
Gigi stretched out her hand and snapped her fingers in front of my face.
"Um— I mean, how do we know there aren’t any cameras up there?" I asked.
She sighed, biting her lower lip.
"Okay," she conceded, gesturing as she spoke. "I’ll try to get all the information about the attic. You have to go up there yourself and get the information."
She watched me with hawk-like eyes.
She didn’t want to be the one searching through the computer because there was a chance Alpha King Ragnar might find out.
Even if he did become suspicious, Gigi could always insist she’d never touched his computer.
The problem was, I needed access to the computer too. It wasn’t just for Gigi’s sake.
"Gigi!" I said after a dramatic pause. "I’ll do anything for you."
As soon as I said that, a small smile began to form on her face.
"So I’ll do it." I smiled before adjusting my posture in my seat. "Besides, I want to do it because we don’t know what kind of woman she is."
The moment I offered her that excuse, she snapped her fingers.
"Exactly! That’s what I’m worried about."
She was lying.
That wasn’t what she was worried about.
She was worried about her own position.
"I know. You’re such a caring person. You’re afraid this woman might use Alpha King Ragnar’s influence to drive a wedge between the brothers."
As I continued feeding her excuses, I watched her begin to nod.
"How did you know? Exactly. That’s what I’m worried about."
In an overly dramatic gesture, she placed both hands over her chest and nodded.
"Because I know you, Gigi. The way my brother treated you, yet you still showered him with love, made me realize how innocent you are," I murmured, watching her slowly scratch the back of her neck.
"Yeah—let’s not talk about it," she replied casually.
Well, the dinner ended with Gigi in a very good mood.
We headed back home, and on the way, I asked her where Jenna was.
"She’ll probably come back later," Gigi replied. She didn’t seem to care where Jenna had gone.
When we arrived home, Gigi rushed into the kitchen to grab herself a soda while I lingered in the living room until, of all people, Ragnar showed up.
"Gigi, how was the dinn," he began before abruptly cutting himself off.
I guessed he’d expected Gigi to be the one standing there.
"Um, she’s in the kitchen," I replied casually, looking him straight in the eye as though nothing had happened between us.
I noticed Ragnar hesitate for a moment, seemingly caught off guard by how I was acting.
Then he cleared his throat, nodded, and glanced past me.
"Where’s Jenna?" he asked.
"She went out with you guys," he added, frowning slightly.
He was the one avoiding eye contact this time.
I glanced over my shoulder, and that’s when I saw Gigi walking out of the kitchen with a can of soda.
She came over and stood beside me without saying a word.
I could have told Ragnar that Jenna had slipped away, but I didn’t know whether Jenna was deliberately keeping it from him.
I didn’t want to be the one exposing Jenna and getting her into trouble.
Besides, I wasn’t even sure what was going on. All I had were suspicions.
"She came home first and rushed to her bedroom," I replied. "Nature’s call."
I smiled as Ragnar nodded.
"Okay, Gigi, come to my room before you leave. I need to talk to you about my next meeting— and my next trip," he said, completely avoiding me.
He reached out and gently patted Gigi’s cheek.
When his eyes shifted slightly toward me, he caught me staring at his hand.
I was giving him mixed signals.
One moment, I acted as though I didn’t care about his existence.
Next, I was jealous.
As he walked away, Gigi turned to me and let out a deep breath.
"I’m so glad he asked you that question. I mean, I can’t lie." She shrugged before following him.
I was honestly so annoyed with her.
That fucking bitch had made me answer because she supposedly couldn’t lie.
What a liar.
I walked into my room with my phone beeping in my hand.
The very minute I saw Roman’s name pop up on the screen, I already knew it wasn’t good news.
The moment I answered the call and held the phone to my ear, he immediately showed his true colors.
"Where the fuck were you, huh? Did you really move in with the Alpha King brothers without telling me? Without asking for my permission first?"
His voice made it clear he’d completely lost it.
