Fated To Three, And I Broke Them All

Chapter 231-The Dark Truth About Royals

Verity:

He thought I was trying to follow him.

"I wasn’t following you," I replied.

He turned fully toward me, resting his hands on his hips.

"Then why are you heading outside?" he questioned, his jaw tightening.

I just stared at him for a moment before rubbing my forehead.

"Actually, I was just going to get some fresh air, but it’s fine. I’ll just go back to my room and breathe through the window," I answered awkwardly.

Then I turned around and hurried back to my room.

Why the heck did he leave me speechless?

I never got speechless anymore.

Once I was back in my bedroom, I went straight to the window.

And what did I see?

Jenna had collapsed to her knees.

Instead of getting back up, she just sat there, crying on the ground.

That couldn’t be good.

Ragnar was on his way outside.

I guessed Jenna had gotten so comfortable sneaking back in this way that she’d done it many times before.

No wonder she’d had that bump on her forehead the other night.

So I opened my bedroom window and climbed out.

Walking across the garden in high heels was difficult enough, let alone while panicking.

By the time I reached her, she looked up, her eyes widening in shock.

She hadn’t expected me to see her.

Then again, I was the least of her problems.

Her biggest concern was getting back inside without Ragnar catching her.

Before she could ask what I was doing outside, or come up with another excuse, I grabbed her arm and helped her to her feet.

"Come on. Alpha King Ragnar is coming outside for a jog," I warned.

She gasped, clutched my hand, and pulled herself upright.

I hurried her toward her bedroom window.

The moment I heard Ragnar’s footsteps, I pulled her behind the wall.

He hadn’t come around the corner yet.

I waited.

She clung tightly to my arm.

In those few tense moments, she lowered her head onto my shoulder and began to cry.

Her eyes were barely open, as though she were trying to hide them.

Her whole body was trembling.

She was freezing.

The moment Ragnar left through the main gate, I pulled away from Jenna to look at her.

I grabbed both her arms and gave them a gentle shake, trying to get her to lift her head.

When she finally did, I saw a handprint on her cheek.

Something inside me snapped.

A protective instinct I didn’t even know I had surged to life.

"Who the heck did that to you?" I asked softly, reaching out to touch her cheek.

She shook her head and caught my hand before it could reach her.

Then she rushed into my arms.

The way she broke down in my embrace shook me to my core.

Soft sobs escaped her lips, and each one made my heart ache for her.

"Jenna, please tell me. What happened? Did your friend do something? I want to know," I insisted, still hugging her.

She finally seemed to cry herself out.

After a few moments, she pulled away and shook her head.

"I need to rest now. I’ll talk to you in the morning."

The way she avoided my gaze filled me with dread.

Something terrible had happened to her.

I could tell.

She just wasn’t ready to tell me about it yet.

"Okay, I won’t force you. But tomorrow morning, you’re telling me everything, okay?" I insisted, gently cupping her face.

Then I walked over to her window and held it open for her.

She never looked up.

I understood that pushing her any further wasn’t going to help.

She was terrified by whatever had happened, and I didn’t want to make it worse by forcing her to share something she wasn’t ready to talk about.

Once I helped her climb inside, she closed the window, and I made my way back to my room.

I just felt so bad for her.

And the fact that I was supposed to leave tomorrow only made things worse.

I decided I would buy myself some time with Roman, maybe leave in the evening instead.

I wasn’t leaving before I’d spoken to Jenna.

Since everything had happened, I couldn’t fall back asleep.

I took a shower, changed into a comfortable pair of pajamas, and settled onto the couch with my laptop resting on my lap.

I spent the next few hours planning new ideas and working on some of the projects Ragnar had assigned to me.

That was when I came across the news.

There had been more Lycan attacks.

In fact, the attacks had become more frequent.

Then something clicked.

Ragnar had asked Gigi to speak with him.

He was probably going to tell her about another trip.

He was definitely planning one.

I wondered whether he would include me this time.

After finishing my work, I changed into a pair of loose pants and a black off-the-shoulder top.

I left a few loose strands framing my face while the rest of my hair was tied into a messy bun.

It was still early in the morning.

I wasn’t sure whether Ragnar had returned from his jog yet as sometimes he went on for many hours.

My attention was entirely on Jenna.

I checked the time, then sat down on the living room couch and turned the television on at a low volume.

I wasn’t really watching it.

My mind was occupied with everything that had happened.

On top of that, I still had to ask Ragnar for three days off.

I leaned my head back against the couch and stretched my neck, realizing I was worried about everything.

Most of all, I couldn’t stop thinking about how I was going to survive those three days with Roman.

I was about to go to his place, and I honestly had no idea what he had planned for me there.

"Anything bothering you?"

The moment I heard that voice, I felt like my heart stopped beating.

I turned around to see Jaguar standing behind the couch, his arms folded across his chest.

"Um— no. It’s just that I need to speak to Alpha King Ragnar," I replied softly, trying to sound professional.

The way he scoffed at the mention of Ragnar’s name immediately told me something was wrong.

"Why?" he asked. "He didn’t come to your bedroom last night?"

The way he emphasized those words sent a jolt through me.

The brothers knew Ragnar had been in my room the other night.

That explained why they had been acting so distant—so upset with me.

But how did they know?

They hadn’t even been home.

Or had they?

I’d heard they’d arrived around sometime in the morning.

Wait!

Could that have been when they saw Ragnar leaving?

So he’d stayed in my room until then?
