Jenna:
It was my birthday. Something I had been so excited about when I first arrived at the Stone Mansion.
But after that, everything had changed. I wasn’t the same person anymore, and neither were the circumstances.
I didn’t even feel happy about my birthday.
My heart felt completely empty. There were no wishes or desires left inside me.
Tears kept filling my eyes whenever I looked at myself, and then I would get angry at myself.
I had done all of this to myself. There was no one else to blame.
It was all my fault.
I had single-handedly ruined my entire life.
Now some stranger had so many of my nudes and information in his hands, and he was blackmailing me.
For the first few days, it was so hard. I would just go there, and now I didn’t need to wear that costume anymore.
But when he did wear his costume, it was because he wanted to hide his identity.
I would stare at him, trying to recognize him.
Somewhere deep down, I felt like I had seen him before. But when or where, I had no idea.
I didn’t know what kind of monster was hiding behind that mask.
And the worst part was that the moment I went in front of him, my hands and legs would start trembling.
I would break out in a sweat, terrified that more of his friends might suddenly show up, just like that stranger had that day.
Now I was a hundred percent sure that stranger had been sent by someone.
Ever since he had started calling me there by blackmailing me, he would say such demeaning things during sex.
And now I was sitting there in my gown as if I were some kind of princess.
Everyone around me was happy.
Gigi had suddenly ended our friendship as if we had never been friends at all.
She hadn’t even asked me once why I was so disturbed.
Then, on the other hand, there was that girl whose brother, I had been told, had abused Gigi.
And now she was the one who constantly came up to me and asked what was wrong with me, why I was acting this way, and whether I was okay.
Just then, my phone beeped.
And I didn’t know why, but every time I saw his message or his call, my heart started pounding like crazy.
He had sent me just a single dot.
He expected me to call him myself. That was what he had decided.
Whenever he sent me nothing but a period, I was supposed to call him.
I didn’t know why he wanted me to call him today.
"Mom, I’ll be out in a minute, if that’s okay," I said to my mother, excusing myself as she waited to take my hand and lead me out to the event.
"Okay, but don’t be late," my mother warned as she walked out of the room.
I rushed toward the door and closed it.
Then I held the phone in my hand before dialing his number.
"Happy birthday to you," he started to sing in a very creepy voice, sending goosebumps over my skin.
"How did you know it was my birthday?" my voice came out all shaky and not confident.
I felt so stupid for asking myself that question since he had already told me he had spies around.
"Are we gonna waste time talking about it?" he asked, sounding tired.
"Why did you call me?" I asked him, keeping my voice low.
"I wasn’t going to bother you today, trust me. Like, I was gonna wait very patiently until after midnight for you to come for the last time, just like I promised. But then I made a little mistake," he said, almost like he was biting his tongue.
But there was no way he would make a mistake. He did everything meticulously.
"What did you do?" I asked him, my voice starting to grow heavier.
"You’re gonna be so mad at me," he said. "And if you could see me, I’m pouting right now."
A weird sensation ran down my back, like goosebumps were spreading across my skin.
"Tell me, what did you do?" I insisted again, this time in a much heavier voice.
"So basically, what I did was, I was watching our videos, you know, because I was getting ready for one last time–" He paused. "I— I don’t know how, but I accidentally hit the send button and sent them to someone."
The minute he said that, my body gave out, and I dropped into the chair.
My breath started to hitch.
I thought I was gonna die.
"What?" I tried to speak, but barely any sound came out.
"Come on, calm down. It’s not that bad," he said very dramatically.
"How is it not bad?" I asked, tears spilling from my eyes.
"Oh my goodness, you must have gotten ready for the day. Did I ruin your makeup? Listen, I’ll fix it for you, okay? I’ll tell you who I sent it to, so you can just go to that person and delete it from their phone. That’s it," he said, causing my hands to shake as I gripped the phone tightly.
"Who did you send it to?" I asked, struggling to get the words out.
"To the Alpha King brothers’ lovely secretary, the one who is organizing everything for you. What’s her name? Ah, Miss Verity."
As he finished, my vision started to blur.
For a moment, I thought I was losing my sight from all the stress that had suddenly hit me at once.
"You promised—you promised that if I agreed, you wouldn’t do this to me. Why did you do that to me?"
I started to cry, and little convulsions shook my lips as I hiccuped.
"Jenna, are you speaking with someone?" my mother called through the door after knocking, making me quickly wipe my cheeks.
"No, I’m actually fixing my makeup," I said, trying to keep my voice steady, but I couldn’t.
The stress was getting to me.
I don’t know why he chose to send them to Verity because there was no way it was a mistake.
However, he suddenly burst out laughing. "I was just kidding. Calm down. Anyway, we are meeting tonight, right?"
The minute he said that, it was as if relief washed over me, but not entirely.
There were still things bothering me.
He still had my videos.
And I would still have to sneak out after midnight to be with him one last time.
I wasn’t even sure if it would be the last time.
I started to cry, and I didn’t understand whether it was because I was relieved or because it still wasn’t over.
"Yes, we are," I replied.
Then I heard him chuckle before he hung up.
I hated my life. I hated living with this suffocation.
