Jaguar:
After the scene that had unfolded at home, my head was still spinning.
On top of that, Theodore wasn’t answering his phone or replying to any of my messages.
I was starting to feel really anxious. He should’ve been home by now.
It was already very late.
Ragnar kept asking me where Theodore was too.
I’d managed to brush him off with a lie, telling him Theodore had mentioned something about being out with friends.
We never disappeared on each other like this.
At the very least, we always left a text so the other person wouldn’t worry.
That was why I was getting angry with Theodore.
He was always doing irresponsible shit like this.
One name came to mind, and I decided to call her.
"Hello?" I said when she answered.
"Hmmm?" But unlike usual, she didn’t greet me cheerfully right away.
She was unusually quiet, only making a faint sound in response.
"Are you okay?" I asked, getting off my bed and walking over to the mirror to fix my hair.
"Yeah, I’m fine."
There was a strange weariness in her voice.
I couldn’t understand what had happened.
"Gigi, actually, I called to ask if you know where Theodore is. He left sometime this afternoon, and no one’s heard from him since. He’s not answering anyone’s calls or replying to any texts."
I kept rambling instead of giving her a chance to answer, so when she finally spoke, I went quiet.
"He came over to my place for movie night earlier."
I sighed in relief.
"Thank God. I was starting to think he’d gone off drinking again," I said, walking back to my bed and lying down.
But her silence confused me.
Usually, whenever Theodore’s drinking came up, mine did too.
There had been a time when the two of us had gotten way too caught up in partying. We drank every night.
Whenever Ragnar left for a meeting, things would get even worse, and we’d start messing around with drugs and all that shit too.
Ragnar had given us one hell of a lecture after he finally put a stop to it.
I mean, he’d caught us long before that.
He’d just been giving us enough rope to see when we’d finally decide for ourselves that enough was enough.
"Gigi, are you sure you’re okay?" I asked again.
"Yeah, I’m fine," she replied. "I’m going to get some rest too. Bye."
The moment she hung up, I shook my head and called her again.
She knew perfectly well that if she acted like this, I wasn’t going to let her sleep until she told me exactly what was bothering her.
She picked up and made the same sound as before.
"Hmm."
"Okay, Gigi. If you don’t tell me what’s wrong right now, I’m coming over," I said, jumping off the bed.
"No. You don’t need to come. I’ll deal with my problems myself."
With that, she hung up on me again.
Well, at least that confirmed one thing.
She was definitely upset about something.
And whatever it was seemed serious because she was unusually quiet.
She wasn’t even complaining about anything in a cute way, which wasn’t like her at all.
That settled it.
I quickly plugged my phone in to charge and changed my clothes.
I’d decided I was going over there and getting her to talk to me myself.
As soon as I stepped out of my room, I saw Verity coming out of the left wing carrying an empty tray.
I figured she’d probably gone to feed Jenna herself.
And damn, the way Verity looked at that moment—
In that light orange dress, with the way she seemed to glow, I wanted to make her my dessert right then and there.
The moment Verity saw me, she slowed down, and a faint blush tinted her cheeks.
Then she quickly picked up her pace and headed toward the kitchen.
I glanced around, and once I saw the coast was clear, I followed her.
She had barely placed the tray on the kitchen counter when I walked up behind her and wrapped my arms around her.
"What are you doing? Someone might see us," Verity complained, trying to free herself.
"Tell me first. Are you still mad at me?" I asked, tightening my arms around her.
I felt her heartbeat falter beneath my hold.
"No. Just let me go."
There was innocence on her face, but annoyance too.
"Come on. I made one little mistake. Don’t punish me this much for it," I complained, turning her around to face me.
Before she could pull away, I quickly wrapped my arms around her back again, keeping her close.
Her hands rested against my chest as she looked up at me with those innocent eyes.
"These things are a big deal to me, Jaguar. I’ve been alone for a long time, so when I give someone a chance, I hope he genuinely loves me."
Even while she spoke, my eyes remained fixed on her lips.
How could someone be this adorable?
A smile spread across my face just from looking at her.
"Okay, now let me go. Someone’s going to come in," Verity requested, placing both hands around my wrists and trying to pull my arms away.
Instead, I pressed our bodies even closer and buried my face against her neck.
Her scent nearly drove me crazy.
She always smelled so fresh.
I brushed my nose lightly along her skin, moving from one side of her neck to the other, then toward her shoulder and cheek, breathing in her scent wherever I went.
"That’s enough."
She finally pushed me away, though there was something playful about it.
"Okay, listen. I’ll come back and talk to you, all right? Probably tomorrow morning."
I finally explained why I was so dressed up this late at night.
She leaned back against the counter with her hands behind her, one knee slightly bent as she moved it absently.
"Where are you going at this hour?" she asked innocently, though I could see the concern in her eyes.
