Something snapped in Lucan’s chest.
He teleported.
Not away but toward.
The fold was sloppy, desperate, fueled by rage and shame and the burning need to make this thing stop talking. He materialised in front of the General and drove his claws into the mist-covered chest. They sank in and kept sinking. There was no resistance. Nobody. Just mist and whispers and the terrible sensation of gripping nothing.
The General looked down at Lucan’s arm, buried to the elbow in black fog.
"Pathetic."
It backhanded him.
The impact lifted Lucan off his feet and sent him crashing through the roof’s edge. He fell two stories, hit the ground on his back, and felt something in his spine shift. Pain erupted white, blinding, absolute. He couldn’t feel his legs.
Above him, the General drifted over the edge of the roof and looked down with those unseen eyes.
"The other General said you were arrogant. I see it now. You teleported toward me. A level ninety-something, charging a General." The mist rippled with what might have been amusement. "That’s not bravery. That’s a death wish wearing confidence."
Lucan tried to teleport. The fold gathered and then collapsed. His reserves were gone. Empty. The well he’d been drawing from for months had run dry, and he was lying in rubble with a broken spine, unable to move, unable to fight, unable to do anything but stare up at the thing that was going to kill him.
Felicity.
Her name was a prayer and a curse and the only thing left in his mind that still felt like his own. He’d failed her. He’d broken her heart, and now he was going to die in an alley without ever telling her the truth, that every cruel word had been a lie, that she was everything, that he would spend eternity making it right if she’d just...
Warmth.
It started in his chest. A golden light that bloomed behind his sternum and spread outward through his veins like liquid sunlight. It reached his spine and the broken vertebrae knitted; he felt it happen, felt bone and nerve and muscle reassemble with a precision that made his own teleportation look like a child’s scribble.
His legs came back to life. Sensation flooded in: tingling, burning, then normal. The pain evaporated. The exhaustion didn’t just recede; it reversed. Energy poured into his body like a river breaking through a dam, and with it came something else, something that made his eyes burn and his throat tighten.
Buffs, her buffs. Felicity’s, his little bunny.
He could feel them settling into his muscles, his reflexes, his spatial awareness. Sharpening. Enhancing. Strengthening. His depleted reserves refilled and then overfilled, pressing against the boundaries of what his body could contain.
Felicity’s power. Her golden light.
Her belief in him poured across whatever distance separated them and was given freely to the man who had shattered her.
She was giving him her strength even now. Even after what he’d done.
The guilt nearly killed him faster than the General.
Lucan rolled to his feet. The movement was fluid, predatory, more than he’d ever been. The golden light pulsed beneath his skin, visible through the dark fur of his arms.
His claws extended, longer, sharper, gleaming with something that wasn’t just physical; hell, he felt like he was over level 100."
The General went very still.
"What!?"
Lucan didn’t let it finish.
He teleported. The fold was perfect, absolute precision restored and then exceeded, the space gathering and releasing with a snap that cracked the air like a gunshot. He appeared behind the General, claws already swinging.
This time, they connected.
The mist screamed. Not the General, the mist itself, a chorus of voices shrieking in unison as Lucan’s enhanced claws tore through the fog and found something solid beneath. Black ichor sprayed. The General staggered forward, and for the first time, Lucan saw its face or the absence of one. A void where features should have been, filled with swirling darkness and the faintest impression of chains.
Chains.
He could hear them now. Metal links dragging against something unseen, the sound coming from everywhere and nowhere. It was beneath the whispers, beneath the mist, beneath the world itself. Something vast and ancient and hungry.
The General recovered faster than anything had a right to. It cracked to attention on Lucan, and the mist concoction into something like arms, dozens of them, reaching from the darkness, each one tipped with claws of solidified shadow.
Lucan teleported through the attack. Fold, release, strike. Fold, release, strike. He moved like light through water, each teleportation sharper than the last, each impact driving the General back. The golden buffs sang in his blood Felicity’s gift, Felicity’s faith, Felicity’s forgiveness given to him before he’d earned a single moment of it.
He didn’t deserve this. He knew that with absolute certainty. He’d broken the woman who loved him, and she’d responded by pouring her power into his body across miles of ruined city because she believed he could survive.
So he would survive. He would fight with everything she’d given him, and he would get back to her, and he would spend the rest of his miserable existence making it right.
The General was changing. The mist thickened, congealing around its form until it was less a creature and more a storm given shape. The whispers grew louder not from the General’s mouth but from the mist itself, hundreds of voices speaking in overlapping cadences. And beneath it all, the chains. Always the chains. Dragging, clinking, pulling against something that strained to break free.
"You can’t win," the General hissed. Its voice was fracturing, splitting into those layered whispers. "You’re still beneath us. Still weak. The buffs will fade, and you’ll be nothing again."
"Maybe," Lucan said. His voice was steady for the first time since the fight began. Steady and cold and filled with the kind of certainty that only came from having something worth losing. "But I’m not fighting for myself."
He teleported one final time, directly into the heart of the mist.
The world went black.
Felicities’ screaming was all they could hear in and outside the manor; she had gone into labour early.
