Felicity's Beast World Apocalypse

Chapter 350: Then the contraction hit

Behind her, Ivan’s hand settled on her shoulder. Heavy. Warm. Steady. She could feel the slight tremor in it, the big lion trying so hard to hold himself together, and she leaned into the touch without looking away from her son’s face.

"Fel," Ivan said quietly, and his voice was thick. "He’s perfect."

She nodded because she couldn’t speak. The tears kept coming, sliding down her temples and into her hair, and she didn’t care. Let them fall. Let the whole room see. This was too big to contain behind composure or dignity or any of the walls she’d built over the years.

The cub’s tiny hand found her finger. Wrapped around it. His grip was astonishingly strong for something so small, and when she curled her finger around his, he held on tighter. His blue eyes never left hers.

Somewhere on the floor, Exile made a sound so low and broken and raw, and she felt the vibration of his coils shifting against the edge of the bed. But she couldn’t look at him yet. Couldn’t look at anyone. This moment belonged to the two of them, her and this tiny, purple-haired, scaled miracle who had just rewritten every story she’d ever told herself about what she deserved.

"You’re here," she whispered against his forehead. "You’re really here."

His eyes sparkled. And for the first time since the pain had started, Felicity smiled.

The minutes blurred. Felicity lost track of how long she held him, only that the room around her had settled into a kind of sacred quiet. She traced the edge of his scales where they met soft human skin at his waist, marvelling at the way the transition was seamless, no seam at all, just her son, whole and strange and beautiful. His snake tail coiled loosely against her hand, warm and alive, and she could feel the faint pulse of his heartbeat through it.

None of them had ever seen a beast cub this new. Children were rare enough, and here he was in her arms. Real.

Voss moved quietly at the foot of the bed, his hands still working, still preparing for what came next. She could feel the careful pressure of his fingers checking, assessing, his wolf ears angled toward her with that focused intensity he carried into everything. Ready. He was always ready.

Ivan hadn’t moved from her shoulder. His hand was a warm, heavy anchor, and she could feel the slow, steady rhythm of his breathing against her back. Steady. He was steady for her, the way he’d always been.

On the floor, Exile had shifted; she could feel the heat of him radiating upward, the coiled stillness of his massive frame. His arms were raised, hovering over the edge of the mattress, hovering over his son, and she could see the way his amber eyes had gone glassy and fixed. He hadn’t touched the cub yet. Hadn’t reached for him. Just... watched. Like he was memorising every detail, every scale, every breath.

Dimitri’s purr rumbled from somewhere to her left, low and constant, and she could feel the vibration of it through the mattress. Protective. Worried. She caught a glimpse of his red eyes tracking the blood on the sheets, the way her hands trembled, and she knew without looking that his jaw was clenched tight.

Victor wasn’t here. Lucan wasn’t here. The absence sat in the room like a held breath, but she couldn’t think about that right now. Couldn’t think about anything except the weight in her arms and the tiny hand still wrapped around her finger.

The cub squeezed. She felt that fierce, astonishing grip and something in her chest cracked open wider.

"Oh," she breathed. "Oh, you’re strong, you’re so strong, my baby."

He made a small sound. Not quite a cry. Something softer. And his mouth curved just barely, just the ghost of it and Felicity’s heart stopped.

"He smiled," she whispered. "Did you see it? He smiled!"

No one answered. No one needed to.

The cub’s hand released her finger and moved, searching, his tiny arm stretching upward. His blue eyes had locked onto something, and she followed his gaze to her chest, to where her breasts were heavy and aching and swollen with milk. Fear hit her like a cold wave.

What if she couldn’t feed him? What if her body failed him this early, this fast?

"Please," she whispered, and she didn’t know who she was talking to. The universe. The magic. Herself. She shifted him closer, guiding his mouth toward her nipple with a hand that shook, and her breath caught in her throat.

He latched on.

The sensation was sharp and immediate and overwhelming, and then the relief flooded through her so hard she sobbed. Milk. There was milk. Her body was doing what it was supposed to do, what it had been aching to do, and the cub began to drink with a quiet, desperate eagerness that made her chest ache.

"Good," she whispered, stroking the soft purple hair at his temple. "Good, that’s good, you’re doing so good."

His eyes were half-closed. His tail uncoiled and relaxed against her hand, and the tension drained out of his tiny body like water. Content. He was content. Fed and warm and held, and the sound he made that soft, rhythmic suckling was the most beautiful thing Felicity had ever heard.

She looked up. Found Exile’s eyes. Found that wordless, transfixed devotion, and she smiled through her tears.

"He’s drinking," she said, and her voice broke on it.

Exile’s jaw worked. He nodded once. Slowly, his hovering hands finally, finally lowered, one of them settling on the mattress beside her hip, close enough to feel the warmth of his son but not touching; he was scared.

Felicity closed her eyes and let herself feel it. The weight of him, the warmth, and the love.

Then the contraction hit.

It rolled through her like a wave deep and grinding and relentless, and she gasped, her arms tightening instinctively around the cub at her breast. Voss was there immediately, his hands steady on her knees, his voice low and urgent.

"Fel. Fel, I need you to pass him to his father now, to exile. Now there’s another one coming."
