Fell Champions

3-44. The Masquerade, Part II

A while ago…

Juala was fading, dying to a poisoned knife to the heart by that little assassin prick, and the only people around to grieve her with a sister who’d lied to her about her upcoming fate, and a Crio Fleshcrafter who was so inept with her Pact she couldn’t even cure a disease that was harmless to most of the world.

It just fucking figured.

She kind of wished Kir was around, just to tweak her nose one more time, annoy the shit out of her. It was their whole thing. Right up until they’d started taking it too far. Started getting actual collateral damage. But by then it was too late. They’d stopped teasing and annoying one another and had just decided to hurt one another, right up until they started hurting everyone else, too, and both had known they needed to stop, but neither knew how.

They’d both been raised to be stubborn, to never give up. And a sibling rivalry seemed like a shit place to start quitting.

“Just sleep,” Leilynn said, and everything in Juala wanted to fight against that one word. Sleeping was surrendering. “Sleep and remember your happiest memories. Remember the masquerade ball?”

Ugh. That fucking ball. Sureya had screamed such a fit about it. ‘Foreign customs’ and ‘diluting Silayan culture’ and a lot of bullshit. But the party had been kind of fun. And the lead-up had been a special, sweet kind of torture. Working together with Rua, trying to learn one another’s ways of moving. It’d been Juala’s idea. Anything to be close to Rua. To have a legitimate excuse to watch her, to observe her. To have an excuse to put her hands on Rua’s hips under the guise of trying to get a feel for how Rua stood.

They’d worked for weeks to learn how to act like each other, so that they could fool Kirhaela during her precious masquerade. So they could trick a kiss out of her for each of them.

How teenage Juala had ached for both of them. How she’d jerk herself every night thinking about them both, either separately or together. She wanted to be the model pelanoa, take them both into a relationship, marry them both, bask them both in affection during the day and fuck them both into the mattress at night.

Fuck, she could feel her blood rushing to her cock just remembering those childish fantasies, which didn’t exactly help against the poison in her blood that was killing her precisely because of her cock.

It’d been such a clever plan. So of course Kir had seen right through it. And then she’d had the nerve to kiss them both anyway.

That was what started it, in hindsight. The rivalry. The need to prove herself smarter than Kir. Just so she could earn the next kiss. A kiss Juala wanted so badly to get one day. She’d conjured up so many fantasies. But she couldn’t beat Kir at anything. Couldn’t outsmart her, not where it mattered. Couldn’t outfight her. And compared to Kir, Juala was a skinny little shit with a big nose and no ass.

Somehow, desire turned to envy. To jealousy. Friendly competition and the need to prove herself turned into something hideous.

And now here it was, ending. With Juala dead from an assassin’s blade. An assassin controlled by Kir.

She just needed another chance. Just one more shot to prove herself. To beat Kir.

“I wish I could do a masquerade again,” she said weakly.

What absolutely fucking pathetic last words. Not because she wanted to do the masquerade just for a chance to fool Kir, but because… she genuinely had enjoyed doing it. Had loved that one night with Rua and Kir, and treasured it more than anything else in her life.

She closed her eyes, expecting to die.

And then Vex, the dumb Crio cunt, said, “Wait, that’s a good idea.”

Juala’s eyes weakly opened, and she tried to croak out a question, but the Crib’s attention was elsewhere. She was hovering over Reyna.

“She’s alive,” Vex said, “but I don’t… there’s nothing there. I think… I think I was too late.”

“Her soul has already departed for the Flow,” Leilynn said. “Her body is just a shell.”

Juala tried to rasp out a demand. A question. Anything. But she was losing strength so rapidly, she couldn’t force the words out. It couldn’t be. Reyna was her most trusted soldier. The closest thing she had to a friend.

Vex looked at Leilynn and said, “I think… I think I can take Juala’s soul crystal out, and put it in Reyna’s body. It’s working fine, her soul’s just gone, except for the tiniest spark. I don’t have a lot of Will left. It’s all I can do.”

“As I said, four survive Il-Su’s attack. One dies. If you do this, Juala Moseina must still die. No one can know she lives, because if the information gets out, another agent will be sent. I’ve seen it.”

“How? You… you see the future, and your past. You don’t see possibilities. Fate can’t change. There’s only one future. You said so yourself.”

“I lied. I do that sometimes. Someone out there is changing fate. Causing divergences. And she’s only going to cause more, the longer she continues. Good for her. The future is… not good.”

“What does that mean?”

“Probably nothing. Maybe everything. It’s so hard to tell these days. You'll both need to be careful. Rua can't know. She'll... make a scene. And her Pact will be a problem. Never once say that Juala died. Let others who genuinely think she did say it for you. Just... don't speak on the topic, either of you."

"I... I can't lie to Mama!"

"I'm not asking you to. I'm asking you to just not say anything to her. The crystal, quickly, Juala doesn’t have much longer.”

Juala gurgled something, kind of a choked rattle, not much strength behind it. She was determined to call someone a cunt one last time, though.

She tried again, really trying to summon up the effort, and directly at the little redheaded Crib. She made a noise that vaguely sounded like it. That put a smile on her face.

And then suddenly Vex’s hand was on her chest, and everything was very much pain and suffering.

It was difficult to perceive the level of hurt. It felt like gargling glass while holding a spicy, sour fruit in her cunt all while tiny fishes nibbled on her tits and burly men beat her with flaming sticks. Like someone took a cheese grater to her everything and then poured scalding hot salt water on the raw flesh and then stabbed her eyes with shards of ice.

So, kind of like her last hangover.

And then she opened her eyes, and she was somewhere else. Not in Rua’s parlor. Not even in Rua’s home. Somewhere worse. Sureya’s.

She woke up in a bed. A boring looking official stood over her, a woman who couldn’t even be bothered to look up from her book before peppering her with questions, interrogating her about the attack, the assailant, if the assassin had said anything, if there were any other witnesses.

Juala nearly told the woman to fuck off, and then remembered who she was now. Or who she had to pretend to be.

Reyna. Her friend. Her dead friend.

Well, that was kind of fucked up.

She nearly tossed out the loose script Leilynn had set out for her, nearly announced herself as the person she actually was, and then realized… this was her chance.

This was her chance to finally be free of all this fucking responsibility. Of all this stupid fucking duty that’d been thrown on her.

She was free.

Free from her mother’s shadow. The reputation she’d never live up to. Free from the stupid feud with Kir that she didn’t know how to end.

Juala began to laugh at herself. The official gave her a funny look, and wrote something in her notes. Probably, ‘witness is definitely insane and cannot be trusted.’ That was fine with Juala.

When the official left, Juala took her shirt off, and couldn’t help but ogle herself. Her tits were huge now. But between them, in the center of her chest, was a small scar. One that the stupid Crib couldn’t be bothered to fix properly. It must’ve been where her soul crystal had been shoved into Reyna’s heart.

Ugh. Did that mean she had two soul crystals? That didn’t seem good. Or maybe it was like a kind of power? Juala had no idea, and honestly couldn’t be bothered to ponder it any further.

She stood from the bed, her legs unsteady beneath her. She took three steps, and nearly fell on her face.

Something felt off. Very off. Like, she was missing something, something important.

She clasped a hand over her vagina, and then swore. She felt empty. Like she was missing a very important, very special internal organ. Her cock was gone.

“Oh fuck off.”

She stood, but her whole balance was off for some reason because of it. Partly because of the missing internal pelanoa biology. But also because Reyna had a fat ass compared to her old body. How did people get around with this much meat on their rear? She’d always appreciated looking at it, grabbing it, spanking it, but all along, these poor people had been walking around with a disability, and didn’t even know it. Who knew having a boney ass was such an advantage.

Juala managed to stumble her way to a dresser with a mirror, and stared at her reflection. A hollow feeling sunk into her gut. She really was staring at Reyna’s face. Which was now her face. She gripped the mirror frame tightly with both hands, her soul power enhanced strength splintering the wood and threatening to crack the glass.

Okay, first, she was going to take a piss. And then she was going to get that stupid Crib to fix what she’d done, put her soul crystal back in her body. Or maybe make her a cock. And then she was going to have to figure out a way to get Reyna’s full soul back into her soul crystal, if such a thing could be done.

She sighed. All very achievable goals.

“Cunt,” she said, staring at her own reflection.
