Chapter 352: EscapeChapter 352: Chapter 352: Escape
"Shi Lan!!"
Donald was so furious his hoarse voice cracked as he screamed. The other male standing guard outside Shi Lan’s door trembled in fear. "H-how is this possible? I’m certain no one came out!"
Donald slapped the male across the face, leaving it red. "Useless! I told you before to keep your eyes peeled. Did you doze off during the night and let her slip past?"
"No, no, sir! I’m positive I didn’t see anyone!"
The male, his face red, felt wronged, but he knew Donald was a favorite of the big boss behind the scenes. He was also an S-level male, whom he couldn’t beat in a fight, so he didn’t dare to show any temper.
Donald narrowed his eyes and immediately tore the room apart again, making sure Shi Lan wasn’t there. Then, with a chill running down his spine, he quickly reported the matter to the Monarch.
As expected, the Monarch flew into a rage and ordered them to find her immediately.
And so, in the dead of night, the underground laboratory descended into chaos. Doors to every room were flung open and shut as males rushed back and forth, turning the place upside down. They even searched the Insect Clan’s space.
Worried that something might happen in the female’s room he was supposed to be guarding, Donald uneasily returned to stand watch. He also took the opportunity to inspect the inside again, making sure there were no suspicious traces.
Still, he truly hadn’t expected Shi Lan to be capable of escaping this place. After all, entry and exit required identity verification, and there were surveillance cameras everywhere. How could a living person just vanish so completely?
’Could it be... she’s a female who has also awakened a Talent Skill?’
Although no female had ever shown such a thing, Shi Lan was a 3S Level female. It was common for 3S Level males to awaken Talent Skills, and given how special she already was, it wasn’t impossible.
’It seems we really did underestimate her, giving her the chance to escape.’
Donald reported this speculation to the Monarch, whose eyes glinted with even greater interest. But he didn’t care about that right now; he just wanted them to recapture her.
The commotion in the laboratory was huge.
Inside the ventilation ducts, Shi Lan could hear the sounds of the males moving around outside, carried along by the airflow. They were frantically searching for her.
She could hear them muttering from time to time, "Don’t tell me a living person can just vanish into thin air?"
"Right, check the ventilation ducts too! She might be hiding in there."
Shi Lan’s scalp tingled as she listened. She knew that if she were caught again, they would certainly increase their security, making her next escape attempt even harder. She had to seize this one precious opportunity.
At that thought, her speed increased.
The little mushroom hopped nimbly through the ventilation ducts, following the breathable spaces, and after winding around and around, finally found what seemed to be an exit.
Shi Lan’s eyes lit up, and she cautiously hopped out.
She carefully surveyed her surroundings. She had no idea where she’d ended up. Before her was what looked like an abandoned underground passage. It wasn’t long and had no lights.
Shi Lan knew it was probably nighttime. The only reason her vision wasn’t impaired was because of her transformation.
She didn’t waste any time and headed toward the end of the passage.
Upon exiting, she seemed to have arrived in a suburban area. There was a small grove of trees nearby, and the little mushroom’s appearance here finally allowed it to blend in completely with the greenery, not looking out of place at all.
Shi Lan looked up at the large trees in frustration, belatedly remembering that she had a terrible sense of direction.
In the ventilation ducts, she could follow the sound of the wind to find an exit. But out here, she was a fool who couldn’t tell north from south.
There was nothing for it. She could only pick a direction and run. No matter what, she had to get away from this nest of trouble first.
Shi Lan wandered around the small woods for a while longer before the time for her mushroom transformation seemed to run out. She reverted to her human form.
The moment she turned back into a person, her vision went black. It took Shi Lan a while to adjust before she could slowly make out the faint, hazy light of the stars in the darkness, which vaguely outlined the branches of the trees.
The scene reminded her of when she was abandoned by her parents on a mountain as a child. But thankfully, there were no strange cries of wild beasts in the woods.
Shi Lan nervously fumbled for a flashlight from her Space Chain. To be cautious, she covered it with a piece of cloth, preventing the light from being too clear and bright, leaving only a faint glow to illuminate the ground so her pursuers wouldn’t spot her.
For safety, she also found the gun He Hanshi had given her.
She didn’t know if her captors were too confident or if they simply hadn’t noticed the Space Chain under her clothes. In any case, aside from her missing chip, everything in her Space Chain was still there.
With the gun in hand, Shi Lan finally felt a little more at ease and continued walking forward.
After walking for a few minutes, Shi Lan was sweating from the heat. She had been so focused on escaping that only now did she realize she was still wearing the clothes from the military base: long-sleeved shirt and pants underneath a light fleece trench coat.
She had no idea where she was now, but the climate was nothing like Border Defense Star’s. The outfit was too hot, so she temporarily stored the coat away.
After who knows how much longer, her feet were sore from walking. She finally saw a house with its lights on.
’I can’t believe someone is still awake this late at night.’
Shi Lan’s eyes lit up, and she happily walked over and rang the doorbell.
She had finally found someone. The thought that she might be able to contact Ye Ming and the others filled her with such relief that she didn’t think too much about it.
Hearing the doorbell, someone quickly came to the door. It was a male who looked very scholarly and polite.
He was somewhat thin. He looked at Shi Lan with confusion in his eyes. "Miss, can I help you with something?"
Because the place she escaped to was so remote, and the house’s construction was rather ordinary, Shi Lan couldn’t tell which planet she was on. She chose her words carefully and asked, "Hello, sir. Could I ask what planet this is?"
"It’s like this—my Beast Husband and I were out traveling when we ran into a meteor storm. Our Teleportation Spaceship accidentally crashed on this planet, and I lost contact with him. Also, my chip seems to have lost its signal for some reason, so I was hoping to find someone to help me."
The male nodded. "I see."
As he spoke, he opened the door and told her, "This is Honglang Star. It’s a relatively backward planet, sparsely populated. No wonder I was so surprised to suddenly see a female here."
’Honglang Star?’
Shi Lan had never heard of it, but her first priority was to contact He Hanshi and the others. She continued, "My chip has no signal. Could I borrow yours to contact my Beast Husband?"
"Of course."
The man nodded amicably. "Miss, your lips look dry and pale. Why don’t you have a glass of water first? You can moisten your throat before we talk."
"Yes, thank you."
Shi Lan was eager to make contact immediately, but since she was asking to use his chip, she had to be respectful. She forced a polite smile.
She sat down in the chair the man pointed to while he went to the kitchen to pour her some water.
Her gaze unconsciously swept around the room, her eyes landing on small mechanical devices set into the cracks of the house.
These small devices were about the size of a coin, typically wedged into the ceiling at half-meter intervals. They were automatic temperature control machines. This style of construction was very similar to that on the Capital Star.
