Chapter 355: Chapter 355: Contacting Ye Ming

Ye Ming and Leo quickly arrived at the room where the Chao Si was being held.

He moved closer to observe the Chao Si carefully, then opened his chip to view the footage of the Chao Si that He Hanshi had sent him earlier.

Perhaps because Ye Ming was so close to the glass door, the Chao Si pressed its body against it as well. It opened its wide, sharp mouthparts, revealing rows of razor-like teeth and transparent saliva, its red eyes glaring covetously at Ye Ming’s figure.

Leo had no doubt that if it weren’t for the glass barrier, the Chao Si would have tried to devour the Eldest Prince.

Standing behind him, he shivered silently, not understanding why the Eldest Prince had to get so close to the Chao Si.

Ye Ming stared at the image on the chip for a long while. He was now absolutely certain: the two Chao Si were not the same.

The Chao Si on the Border Defense Star seemed slightly larger, and its raised scorpion tail was a dark purple, whereas the tail of the one imprisoned here was a simple black.

He had just asked Dr. Ai about the Chao Si’s growth, but the doctor hadn’t given him a direct answer.

Ye Ming wanted to clear Dr. Ai of suspicion, but after seeing the changes in the Chao Si again, he still found the doctor very strange.

’Fifth-generation Chao Si...’

The Chao Si had been transported to the Border Defense Star by someone, and there had been no trace of them before. In short, all signs indicated they weren’t a natural mutation of the Insect Clan, but possibly a variant bred and propagated by human hands.

’Does "fifth-generation Chao Si" in Dr. Ai’s notebook refer to the fifth generation of a different variant of Chao Si under research?’

’And how deeply is Dr. Ai involved in all this?’

Ye Ming suddenly felt like everything was a mystery. If it really was Dr. Ai, he couldn’t fathom why they would create a new species of the Insect Clan, especially one that caused the spiritual power of several people to collapse.

’What good would that do him?’

The Chao Si in the glass room let out a sharp, piercing screech at the two of them. The room’s soundproofing was decent, but the Insect Clan’s cries had a strong penetrative quality and carried a natural Sound Wave attack, so they both heard it clearly.

Ye Ming frowned, snapping back to his senses. He turned off the chip’s display and led Leo away.

’The priority is to find Lanlan first,’ he thought. ’I’ll deal with these other matters later.’

As for Dr. Ai... Passing the doctor’s office, his gaze darkened. After a moment, he lowered his voice and said to Leo, "For the next few days, stay in the research lab and keep a close eye on Dr. Ai at all times."

Leo didn’t ask why. He just said, "What about when he goes to the bathroom? Should I follow him then too?"

Ye Ming looked at him with his cool green eyes. "I think you know what I mean by ’at all times.’"

"Roger!"

Leo jolted and immediately stood up straight, nodding.

"Start tonight."

With that, Ye Ming left, leaving Leo behind in the research lab.

Having no choice, Leo could only report in with his fiancée before quietly slipping into the room next to Dr. Ai’s office.

「Meanwhile」

Shi Lan felt a little more at ease after guessing she might be on the Capital Star.

She walked for a long time before finally reaching a well-lit area.

However, it was still nighttime. Without a chip, she had no concept of time and didn’t know the exact hour. All she knew was that she had walked a long way down an unlit road and seemed to have just reached a residential area.

But as she walked, she saw very few lit houses and not a single pedestrian on the streets.

She surveyed her surroundings.

Although Mu Tangfeng had taken her on a grand tour of the Capital Star’s residential districts last time, they had been flying and rarely landed to get a close look at any specific place.

Shi Lan still couldn’t tell which part of the Capital Star she was in. The architectural style wasn’t as glamorous as in most parts of the Capital; the buildings were relatively short, though a few of the residential towers looked brand new.

The contrast between the old, dilapidated areas and the brand-new buildings was stark, reminding her of the first time she saw the slums set against the Capital’s urban center.

After her recent attempt to ask for help went wrong, Shi Lan was hesitant to approach just anyone.

She wandered around for a while but couldn’t find a hotel. She finally stopped in front of a lit house with a clean and tidy entrance, rang the doorbell, and kept her hand on the pistol hidden warily in her sleeve.

Soon, a female came to open the door.

She grumbled as she opened it, "What time is it? That little brat finally decided to come home?"

After opening the door and seeing a female outside, she paused, and the angry look on her face vanished in an instant.

A moment later, her gaze fell on Shi Lan’s face. She looked down at her chip in disbelief, tapping it a few times, then her eyes lit up with surprise. "Shi Lan? Are you Shi Lan?"

Shi Lan didn’t understand why the woman was so happy to see her. Once bitten, twice shy—she even suspected this woman might be one of her kidnappers.

Perhaps sensing the wariness in her eyes, the female opened her chip again. "It’s like this—the Eldest Prince has put up a bounty for you all over the Star Network. There’s a lot of money for finding you, so I couldn’t contain my excitement."

Shi Lan leaned in for a look, and it was true.

The wording of the bounty was especially earnest, stating that her Beast Husbands were all worried and searching for her.

Seeing this, her eyes reddened slightly. She nodded and asked, "Is this the Capital Star?"

The female quickly replied, "Yes, it is. Why did you suddenly show up in the slums? Did someone from the slums kidnap you?"

Then, as if realizing something, the female muttered to herself, "No wonder. I was just saying, why was the Eldest Prince turning the slums upside down these past two days? Everyone was talking about it, wondering who in the slums would dare to touch a great person like you who donated so much for our renovation. Not to mention you’re the Eldest Prince’s wife. I can’t believe there’s really a fool like that."

Hearing this, Shi Lan immediately asked, "Is Ye Ming still here?"

"The Eldest Prince? Oh, he just pulled his people out this afternoon."

"But it’s okay, you’re looking for him, right? His contact info is on the bounty notice. I’ll contact him right now."

Realizing that Shi Lan was a golden goose, she cautiously lowered her voice and glanced around furtively. "Here, come on in. Don’t be a stranger. You can call me Aunt Liu."

Seeing that the woman knew so many details, Shi Lan relaxed a little and followed her inside.

She hadn’t expected the slums to have changed so much in such a short time.

Although some houses hadn’t been renovated yet, she could see that the slums’ overall appearance wasn’t as dilapidated as before—so much so that she hadn’t even recognized the place.

Shi Lan followed Aunt Liu into her home. The woman didn’t waste any time; true to her word, the first thing she did was dial Ye Ming’s communicator.

In the past few days, Ye Ming had received numerous nuisance calls. Ever since the bounty was issued, people had been calling in with all sorts of false information about Shi Lan. Money moves the heart, and it was hard not to be tempted by the reward of tens of millions.

Not only did Ye Ming have to search for Shi Lan, but he also had to spend a lot of time sifting through all the fake tips from the bounty notice.

But even so, when he saw the incoming call from an unknown number, he still chose to answer it immediately.
