Alaric’s brain went into overdrive as he immediately went through everything and concluded his mistake.

In the novel, it was only mentioned that the three squire rank assassins who came to kill the young lord travelled through the Moliken Forest.

It is entirely possible that they had companions and a temporary base in the Moliken forest.

Now that he thought hard about it, there really was an offhand mention that other houses in the vicinity suffered assassination attempts at the same time as the young lord of House Orlen.

It wasn’t his fault for not considering that all those assassins would be travelling together, as they usually weren’t a social bunch due to the nature of their job.

Even the ones who had attacked the young lord all attacked separately with different sets of methods.

He carefully took in the scene in front of him.

The corpse of the bear-like beast was as big as a two storey house.

Half of its weight was supported by a single man whom Alaric suspected to be a Knight. He was walking in the front.

At the back were fifteen people, collectively bearing the remainder of the corpse. Most, if not all, had to be Squires.

Anything less would’ve been crushed beneath its weight. Yes, crushed beneath its weight. Due to a lack of equipment, they were literally carrying the bear above their head.

Alaric’s eyes narrowed as his grip tightened around the knife.

This is my chance.

The very next moment, the knife shot out at a speed Alaric hadn’t thought he was capable of.

The Knight holding the bear suddenly felt an intense sense of danger. His instincts screamed at him to evade.

But he couldn’t.

The moment he abandoned his position, the immense weight of the bear would collapse onto the Squires behind him.

So instead of retreating, he twisted his body just enough to avoid a fatal wound.

Alas, it didn’t turn out to be the correct move.

The knife racing toward his neck had been thrown by someone possessing Minor Mastery of Throwing Knives.

It was more than flawless accuracy. It accounted for instinct, hesitation, and even the choices an opponent was most likely to make.

The throw had accounted for the only evasive movement the Knight could afford.

The moment Alaric witnessed the scene of assassins of all professions working together, he knew their bond ran deeper than surface level. He knew the Knight wouldn’t risk the lives of Squires.

His judgment proved correct, the Knight indeed only shifted slightly.

The blade slipped past where his neck had been and drove straight into the elbow supporting the bear.

It was the very knife that had pierced the serpent’s scales and sunk deep into its massive body, but encountering the Knight, it couldn’t even completely pierce through.

Crack!

It failed to pierce through the arm, but the impact still shattered the elbow, causing the Knight’s arm to buckle beneath the bear’s crushing weight.

The Knight’s eyes widened as he finally understood Alaric’s true target.

He drew a breath and shouted, "Enemy attack! Disperse!"

But before the warning could reach the Squires, five more knives had already found their targets.

Each blade pierced the neck of a Squire supporting a critical section of the bear’s weight.

The massive corpse lurched.

The Knight and some Squires reacted in time and rolled away. Others disappeared beneath the bear’s crushing weight.

It wasn’t over.

Stones whistled through the air before the surviving Squires could even regain their footing.

Some struck eyes. Others smashed into throats. A few missed entirely.

Minor Mastery of Throwing Knives didn’t make him a master stone thrower. But footwork, body mechanics, timing, and release were universal. Even crude stones became deadly in his hands.

"Run idiots!"

The Knight roared as he charged toward the direction the stones had come from.

Whoever their attacker was, they had planned every step of the ambush.

They had struck only after the bear hunt had exhausted the group, then waited until its immense weight restricted everyone’s movements.

Even his reflexive attempt to protect the Squires had been anticipated.

The bone chilling accuracy was one thing. Predicting his only possible reaction was another entirely.

His left forearm hung uselessly by his side. The knife had shattered his elbow, leaving the arm completely crippled.

Even so, the Knight couldn’t retreat.

Someone had to hold the attacker back long enough for the others to escape.

Alaric’s heart pounded wildly when he saw the Knight charging his way.

He kept the last two knives firmly in his hands while he ran.

Unfortunately, he might be at the peak of mortal limits when it came to skill in throwing knives, but that didn’t include sprinting.

His form was amateur at best, not to mention the uneven forest undergrowth with numerous obstacles in his way.

It allowed the Knight to close the gap with him. His right hand held a longsword, which he slashed at Alaric’s legs.

At the very last moment though, the young lord jumped, dodging the blow, and twisted his body mid air to generate momentum to throw the knife in his hand.

Having seen his attacker throw knives with incredible skill, the Knight was prepared but he had still underestimated his enemy’s mastery.

Alaric’s knife spun through the air, glanced off the Knight’s sword, and veered toward his right shoulder.

His left arm was already out of commission. If the knife hit the right shoulder then it would cripple his right arm as well.

Driven by instinct, the Knight pushed his body to the limit and shifted at the very last moment.

Unfortunately for him, Alaric had already anticipated it.

The first knife wasn’t meant to kill but to force a reaction.

While the Knight’s attention followed the spinning blade, Alaric closed the remaining distance with the second knife already in hand.

Just as his knife was about to stab into the Knight’s neck, a kick slammed into his abdomen.

It felt like he had been hit by a sledgehammer as he vomited a mouthful of blood.

The drop in momentum allowed the Knight to catch his breath and reassess the situation.

His enemy’s reaction to the kick made the Knight realise he was far weaker than he appeared.

Alaric held the knife firm in his hand, while focusing on the Knight.

In the end, the gap between a Knight and a Squire wasn’t limited to their physiques.

Even with exceptional physical foundations, Alaric’s body still fell short of a Knight’s. The difference only became more pronounced once mana entered the equation.

Knights could use mana to bolster their body, while Squires could only rely on the raw strength of their flesh.

That kick was proof enough.

Despite his exhaustion from fighting the bear and his crippled left arm, the Knight’s mana infused kick still struck with enough force to make Alaric vomit blood.

The brief exchange had brought them close enough for the Knight to finally get a clear look at his attacker’s face.

Recognition dawned on the Knight.

His pupils contracted in disbelief.

"Young Lord Alaric... of House Orlen?"

Alaric’s expression remained unchanged. He had long since taken into account that his identity would be exposed once they fought at close range.

It didn’t matter.

He had no intention of letting anyone leave the forest alive.

Silence hung between them for a heartbeat. Then disbelief gave way to fury.

"Idiot!" the Knight growled. "I was sent to protect you!"
