First Immortal of the Sword

Chapter 3003 - It’s Lonely at the Top

Ming Jiu was the first to attack. He looked shy and inarticulate, but in truth, he was utterly frenzied.

He immediately targeted Yun Wuxiang, his sword intent boiling over like a furnace. Sword qi billowed from his every pore.

He took a step forward, and his sword qi bore down on the nine heavens.

Mo Zhong tried to intercept him, only for the raging windstorm of sword qi to come dangerously close to sending him flying.

At a critical juncture, Ning Chang of the Sect of the Origin intervened to hold Ming Jiu back.

Clang!

Baili Qingfeng’s Dao of the Sword was the steadiest. He attacked like a divine mountain in motion, crushing everything in his path.

When he swung his sword and advanced, the sky broke, offering no more resistance than paper. Everything was plunged into disarray.

Why was Baili Qingfeng a benchmark for sword cultivators of the All-Profound Dominion? It was simple: because his attainments were lofty enough to warrant it!

Ye Hongye attacked at the same time as Baili Qingfeng. Her beautiful face was full of dense murderous intent, and her clothes swayed around her. Wisps of sword qi spread through the air, like weeds flourishing like mad. They blanketed the sky and blotted out the sun in a continuous flow; there was simply no end to them.

She’d been responsible for administering the testing of the strength of Sword Sovereign City’s sword cultivators. She was the only person in that role, and none had ever replaced her!

This was for the simple reason that none could compare in terms of her understanding of the Dao of the Sword, or her knowledge of the myriad Grand Daos.

But the Sword Monk, Gu Hanzhou, was the most dazzling of the group. He rose into the air, sat cross-legged, and set his wooden sword in front of him.

When he started chanting sutras, countless sword lotuses fell across heaven and earth, dreamlike and ethereal. They brought with them grand, mysterious, austere charm.

When the lotuses bloomed, it was like the birth of a Buddhist kingdom. Endless holy light rose within the sword qi, and mysterious chanting transformed into monstrous sword force.

Most wondrous of all, with the support of his Dao of the Sword, the other Sword Sovereign City survivors’ auras rose.

The River Lord, Gongye Futu, and Li Sansheng attacked valiantly.

Their onslaught was such that even the other experts of the Far Shore had to take it seriously. All of them fought back with all their might.

The Heavenly Sovereigns’ expressions shifted. All of them took out the methods they’d kept in reserve to defend themselves; they dared not hesitate.

Boom!

Heaven and earth trembled. Everything shook on all sides. It was as if everything had been overturned, annihilated, and blasted to bits.

Dazzling light surged amidst the upheaval and destruction. It was like a vision of chaos.

Strangest of all, the boundless River of Destiny on the far side of the barrier was separated from them by a spacetime barrier, yet it nonetheless froze in place.

The river denizens standing there could no longer see anything at all.

This wasn’t just because time and space had been thrown into upheaval. Rather, everything happening on the battlefield was so destructive and tumultuous that all they saw from their vantage point was dazzling light and flames of destruction.

Su Yi wasn’t affected, but he couldn’t see the battle clearly, either. For one thing, his cultivation base was far from enough for that. For another, the aftershock of their conflict was too strong for his divine sense to penetrate.

If he tried, he’d suffer a severe backlash!

Kaboom!

The aftershock swept forth like a tidal wave or avalanche, continuously sweeping outward.

When it reached the unnaturally tall, stalwart Gui Nian, it vanished harmlessly as if it had collided with a natural barrier.

Gui Nian stood tall, not moving a muscle.

“Your Excellency, Miss Hongpao is doing well. She’s in the final stages of rebuilding her body and spirit. When she breaks seclusion, she’ll have undergone a complete transformation,” said Gui Nian, calm and composed even as he watched this unparalleled, destructive battle. He was even still in the mood to chat.

“Is that so? Excellent,” Su Yi said distractedly. He couldn’t really watch the battle, but he could sense its terrifyingness, and he found it hard to stay calm.

Heavenly Sovereign Ku Xuan’s body was taut, and his fists were clenched. There was no hiding the astonishment on his face.

Even an experienced Heavenly Sovereign like him was this tense. It was thus obvious how terrifying this battle was!

Gui Nian spoke up once more. “Your Excellency, they’ve been thoroughly suppressed. Unless something unexpected happens, they’re sure to lose! Of course...”

“Of course what?” asked Su Yi.

“This is the River of Destiny,” Gui Nian said gravely. “If we fight to the death, it’ll inevitably trigger a backlash from the Laws of Destiny. That means that even if we succeed in killing them, we’ll pay an enormous price.”

Su Yi’s brow furrowed. “You’re saying it’ll be hard to determine a victor.”

There was no way their enemies would admit defeat lightly. If pushed into a corner, they’d almost certainly risk a backlash from the natural order of destiny. There was no way they’d just admit defeat!

That made the situation troublesome.

The battle raged on. From time to time, desperate cries rang out.

Su Yi noticed that Yu Xiu, Bo Yunjun, and the other participants in the Struggle for Heavenly Fate had all undone the seals on their cultivations. All of them now displayed strength far beyond that of a Heavenly Monarch!

Su Yi didn’t even need to think to know that they’d stepped onto a path beyond the Five Realms of Eternity a long time ago, just like Lian Yue.

However, they were noticeably weaker than Mo Zhong, Ning Chang, and the others. They were at best roughly comparable to the Heavenly Sovereigns.

Even so, Su Yi had no choice but to acknowledge that everyone who’d come here from the Far Shore was extraordinary.

Suddenly, a calm, casual voice resounded throughout the chaos and destruction. “Enough. If things go on like this, both sides will suffer heavy casualties. It isn’t worth it.”

A moment later, darkness descended over the firmament. A mysterious purple and gold talisman unfurled overhead, as if opening a divine decree.

The chaotic landscape instantly sank into stillness. It was as if a giant, invisible hand had appeared to quell the spacetime turbulence and unrest. Everything returned to a calm, orderly stillness.

What’s going on? Su Yi’s eyes narrowed. He could sense an impending lethal threat so intense that his body and soul instinctively tensed.

The same was true for Heavenly Sovereign Ku Xuan.

Boom!

Gui Nian immediately shielded Su Yi, then gazed into the sky, a grim look on his rough-hewn face.

At the same time, the combatants all felt chills course through their bodies.

Practically simultaneously, Baili Qingfeng, Ye Hongye, and the others retreated explosively.

But they were one step too late.

A man in Daoist robes, a fishtail crown, and elegant, distinctive features appeared out of nowhere. He carried a clear jade ruler carved with the name “Supreme Purity” in mysterious ancient glyphs.

When he raised his ruler and struck the air, the River Lord, Gongye Futu, Li Sansheng, Baili Qingfeng, Ming Jiu, Ye Hongye, and Gu Hanzhou staggered, blood pouring from the corners of their lips. Their qi circulation came dangerously close to collapsing.

Su Yi saw it clearly, and he couldn’t help but gasp. In one casual strike, he injured them all? Just who is that guy in the fishtail crown?

The Heavenly Sovereigns were stunned too. The battle hadn’t lasted long, but it was enough that they were thoroughly convinced of the Sword Sovereign City cultivators’ strength.

The Heavenly Sovereigns were already injured, and they looked quite wretched. The same was true of the experts of the Far Shore, who all had varying degrees of bloody gashes all over their bodies.

Had things continued like this, they’d have been sure to lose. They would never have guessed that a purple and gold talisman would appear out of nowhere and suppress the entire landscape.

The man in the fishtail crown had effortlessly turned the situation on its head as soon as he arrived. In just one strike, he injured all of the survivors of Sword Sovereign City!

Who wouldn’t have been surprised?

Yun Wuxiang, meanwhile, lit up with delight and clasped his fist in greeting. “Martial Uncle!”

At the same time, Gui Nian gnashed his teeth. “Your Excellency, that’s Lonely Heights!”

The River Lord and the others recognized him, too. All of their expressions were instantly overcast and unsightly.

Lonely Heights was called that because “it was lonely at the top.” He was a legendary expert of Three Purities Temple, and his cultivation was unfathomably deep.

It was also he who’d brought Yun Wuxiang back to life after the Big Boss of Sword Sovereign City killed him!

“If you keep fighting and causing a commotion like this, you’ll provoke the natural order of the River of Destiny,” said Lonely Heights.

He was the sole center of attention amidst the silence. His Daoist robes fluttered around him, and his features were youthful, yet he had the steady presence of one who’d experienced the vicissitudes of countless years.

The purple and gold talisman in midair landed in his outstretched palm.

“Su Yi, you’re coming with us. The rest of you can be on your way,” said Lonely Heights.

He then turned to look at Su Yi. It seemed he wasn’t interested in anyone else present, as he didn’t so much as glance at them.

“You want to take the Big Boss with you? Over our dead bodies!” said Ming Jiu. He took a step forward, his gaze steely.

The other Sword Sovereign City experts all stood in front of Su Yi, like one natural barrier after another.

“You’re seeking out your own demise!” Yun Wuxiang said with a cold laugh.

The experts of the Far Shore glared, their eyes full of hatred. They wanted nothing more than for Lonely Heights to ruthlessly slaughter every last survivor of Sword Sovereign City.

But Lonely Heights disregarded all this and looked at Su Yi, his tone calm and natural. “I’ve never had any interest in killing those weaker than me, and I disdain to do so.

“That said, if the need arises, I won’t show mercy. I know all of them follow your orders, so it’s up to you to decide.”

His voice resounded clearly throughout the area. Everyone felt intense pressure bear down on them.

No one in the All-Profound Dominion dared to disregard Lonely Heights.

“Your Excellency, according to the rules of Sword Sovereign City, it’s better to die than retreat. Our swords can break, but we cannot cast away our pride!” Gui Nian said gravely. “We’re willing to fight to the death!”

Gongye Futu and the others shouted their agreement in unison, their voices booming throughout the area. “We’ll fight to the death!”

They were calm and decisive even in the face of death, as if their imminent deaths were a trivial, ordinary matter.
