First Night with the Army: The Stoic Big Shot Is Done Pretending
Chapter 209 - 208When Wen Ci heard the word "brother-in-law," her gaze instinctively fell on Wen Yaozu. Then she heard him say, "Sis, brother-in-law wants to talk to you."
"Okay."
Wen Ci walked over to the landline and sat down.
It had been less than eight hours since she’d parted from Huo Jingyuan, and she was already missing him. She spoke in a calm, unhurried voice, "Did you need me for something?"
"Honey, the Northwest Military Region called me. They’re temporarily transferring me to Shanbei."
"Huh?" Wen Ci frowned, her expression immediately turning serious. "But your injuries... haven’t they fully healed yet?"
"They want me to go over and serve as a regimental political commissar for a year."
"Political commissar?!"
Wen Ci’s eyes widened. She wasn’t an expert on military ranks, but she knew the difference between a regimental commander and a regimental political commissar.
Wen Ci collected herself and asked, "Why so sudden? Do they want you in Shanbei right away, or can you wait until you’ve fully recovered?"
"The transfer is next week. They want me to go over there and see if there are any promising new talents. On paper, I’m the regimental political commissar, but it’s more of a nominal position. I won’t have to do any training or strenuous work."
"Oh, that’s fine then."
She had been worried that Huo Jingyuan would have a hard time adjusting to a year of recuperation in the Beijing family compound. But joining a unit and serving as a regimental political commissar was a different story.
Even if it was just a nominal position, it was still quite impressive.
"Then, should I go with you?"
Huo Jingyuan answered honestly, "The higher-ups aren’t requiring it, but I am eligible to have my spouse accompany me. I want you to come with me. Is that okay?"
"Of course!"
’As his wife, if she didn’t go with him, who would?’
’Besides, Shanbei isn’t that far from Beijing—only about a day’s journey by train. She could still manage her business; she would just have to rush back to Shanbei on the same day.’
"What about your business?"
"I can still do it."
The military didn’t forbid officers’ spouses from running businesses; in fact, if a business reached a certain scale, it was even encouraged and supported.
Suddenly, Wen Ci caught a glimpse of Wen Yaozu sitting obediently on the sofa, his face full of anticipation. "What should we do about Wen Yaozu, then? Should we take him with us?"
There was still a month until school vacation.
Taking Wen Yaozu with them would require a trip back to their old home in the mountain village to get their parents’ permission.
"Isn’t the start of the school year a long way off?"
"The key issue is that we need his parents’ permission."
Huo Jingyuan fell silent.
He knew Wen Ci had suffered hardships in her childhood.
She surely wouldn’t want to see her parents again.
And as a minor, Wen Yaozu had to have a guardian’s permission to travel.
Wen Yaozu, who had been listening from the side, immediately chimed in, "I’ll go back and talk to Mom and Dad. They’ll definitely agree to let me follow you guys for the summer. If they don’t, I’ll go on a hunger strike!"
"What about Wen Yaozu learning to use the computer?"
As a regimental political commissar on temporary assignment, although the military region would allocate him temporary housing, it would be nowhere near as large as the family compound in Beijing.
Furthermore, he would be transferred again in a year, so setting up the computer in the Shanbei family quarters was not a viable option.
"Let’s talk about it in detail when I get back."
Wen Ci nodded. "Mm-hmm."
She had been exhausted from the previous night, and although she had slept for a while in Hangzhou and on the plane, she couldn’t shake off the mental fatigue. "I’ll wait for you at home, then."
"Mm-hmm."
Wen Ci hung up the phone.
Wen Yaozu immediately pressed, "Is brother-in-law being transferred somewhere? I can live with you guys during the summer vacation. Mom and Dad will definitely agree. If they don’t, I’ll go on a hunger strike!"
Ever since he was little, his favorite tactic had been to use a hunger strike as leverage.
No matter what it was he wanted, if it wasn’t bought for him, he’d start a hunger strike.
Typically, by the next day, he would get what he wanted.
