Mehmet Topal reacted first.
He had sprinted off his defensive mark the second Mateo won the ball. Topal was surprisingly quick across the turf for a towering holding midfielder, closing ground with the wide, measured strides of an enforcer accustomed to snuffing out counters. He reached the edge of Valencia's half on a sharp diagonal, squaring his shoulders to force Mateo out toward the touchline.
It was textbook defending. Juan Mata and Éver Banega were hustling back behind him. If Topal could stall the break for three seconds, Valencia's shape would recover.
Mateo did not slow down. He scooped the ball with the outside of his right boot, lifting it cleanly into the air.
It rose in a tight arc, clearing Topal's head by inches. Mateo accelerated past the midfielder's blind side, met the dropping ball on the other side without breaking stride, and drove straight through the middle.
Topal spun around slowly, his boots planted in the turf as he watched the blue shirt pull away. Eight years of senior football, and nobody had ever executed a sombrero over him like that.
David Navarro was already closing in.
The veteran centre-back had seen the flick from twenty yards away and immediately stepped out to shut the move down. He advanced with his chest broad and arms wide, ready to body-check Mateo into the grass the moment he committed to a lane.
Mateo angled his run inside. Navarro shifted his weight to close the door, lunging with his right leg to hook the ball away.
Right as Navarro committed, Mateo jammed his studs into the turf. He dragged the ball back with the inside of his left boot, coming to a dead stop while Navarro's momentum dragged him sliding past the play.
Mateo pushed the ball into the open space and crossed the eighteen-yard line.
Ricardo Costa threw himself into the path. He went down in a desperate, full-blooded slide tackle, leading with his right boot to swipe through the ball, the player, or both. It was the last line of defense before the goalkeeper.
Mateo read the challenge before Costa even hit the ground. He waited until Costa's studs were inches away, then shifted the ball from his right foot to his left, flicking it forward into the space Costa had vacated. A textbook La Croqueta at full sprint.
Costa swept through empty air. Mateo stayed on his feet, clear through on goal.
César Sánchez rushed off his line. At thirty-nine years old, the Valencia keeper had played in European finals and faced every legendary striker on the continent, but the speed of this counter left him no time to hesitate. He threw himself forward, spreading his limbs wide to cover as much of the target as possible.
Mateo watched the veteran commit to the dive and chipped the ball with the tip of his boot.
The ball lifted off the grass, floating in a gentle, effortless arc over César's outstretched gloves. It hung in the air under the bright floodlights before dropping into the six-yard box, taking one soft bounce, and settling into the empty net.
Fifty thousand Valencia supporters in the steep stands went dead silent.
Mateo slowed to a jog, watching the net ripple. Behind him, the roar started. Jermaine Jones came charging forward with his arms wide, Jamie Vardy was sprinting in from the right wing, and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar was shouting at the top of his lungs from the opposite channel. Anthony Annan jogged up with his hands clamped over his head, laughing in disbelief.
From the tackle in his own half to the chipped finish, only ninety-six seconds had passed. One teenager had carved through four Valencia players and left the stadium stunned.
Mateo turned toward the corner flag, took hold of his jersey, and pointed firmly at the name and number across his back: SILVA, 38.
Jones crashed into him with a bear hug, dragging him to the turf as Vardy and Huntelaar piled on top of them.
At the Schalke bench, Magath sat down heavily, staring out at the pitch with his hands resting on his knees.
"I have seen Kaká do that," Magath muttered under his breath, shaking his head.
Hughes stepped up beside him, rubbing his forehead. "Honestly, boss, that looked more like Ronaldinho."
Across the pitch, Unai Emery stood frozen on the edge of the technical area, gripping his tactical clipboard with both hands. He had spent six weeks preparing his squad to shut down a disciplined playmaker who dictated tempo through short passing. Now he had to figure out how to stop a player capable of tearing an entire backline apart on his own.
Three hundred and fifty kilometers away, in an executive suite at the Camp Nou, three men watched the broadcast on a wide screen.
Pep Guardiola was leaning so far forward in his chair that his elbows were resting on his knees. Andrés Iniesta sat beside him, holding a mug of coffee that had gone completely cold. Lionel Messi leaned against the back table, twirling a pen between his fingers while watching the slow-motion replay.
Messi broke the quiet room, speaking in low, thoughtful Spanish. "Where on earth did he pick that up so quickly?"
Guardiola kept his eyes glued to the screen as the replay showed Mateo dancing past Costa. "He is reading the defensive momentum before the tackle even lands."
Iniesta tilted his head, pointing a finger at the screen during the second replay. "Look at the shift from the right to the left foot. That is my exact movement."
Guardiola gave a slow nod. "I saw it."
"He didn't just stumble into that," Iniesta said, looking over at his manager with genuine curiosity. "You don't pull that off at that speed against Costa unless you've drilled it thousands of times. How is he doing that at seventeen?"
"I wish I had an answer for you, Andrés," Guardiola murmured, rubbing his chin as the broadcast showed the silent Mestalla crowd.
Messi tapped his pen against the table, watching the young Brazilian celebrate on screen. "Seventeen years old, and he just silenced the entire Mestalla by himself."
"I know," Guardiola said softly, leaning back into his seat. "We are going to be seeing a lot more of him."
