Mateo closed down Banega from the front while Rakitić pinched in from behind.

The two of them squeezed the Argentine into a tight pocket, leaving him with nowhere to shield the ball. The tackle knocked it loose, Rakitić poked it forward with his toe, and Mateo scooped it up in stride.

Having dropped deep since the opening goal, Mateo still had plenty of spring in his legs while the Valencia midfield was already feeling the burn. He crossed the halfway line before Banega could even finish turning on his heel.

David Albelda stepped out to meet him.

The veteran Valencia captain had spent a decade commanding European midfields. He lacked top-end sprint speed now, but he read passing lanes with surgical precision. He stood his ground with balanced footing and arms out wide, daring the teenager to try to beat him off the dribble.

Mateo did not hesitate. He dragged the ball slightly behind his standing foot, slipping a sharp nutmeg right through Albelda's open legs. He burst around the midfielder's right shoulder, collecting the ball cleanly on the other side at full tilt.

Albelda could only turn his head in slow motion as Mateo tore into the final third.

Ricardo Costa was the lone defender deep enough to react, frantically backpedaling while keeping an eye on Vardy. Huntelaar drifted wide toward the far post to stretch the coverage, while Annan pushed up on the right flank.

Then Vardy made his move. It was a textbook striker run, bending diagonally across the blind spot of the center-backs and timing his acceleration for the flight of the ball.

Mateo spotted the gap instantly. He clipped the ball with the outside of his right boot, lofting a delicate, weighted chip over Valencia's retreating backline.

The ball hung in the air, clearing Costa's desperate jumping header by inches before dropping right into Vardy's path.

César Sánchez bolted off his line. Reading the trajectory early, the Valencia keeper charged out with his arms spread wide, looking to smother the chance before the striker could get a clean touch.

Vardy threw caution to the wind. He threw his entire body forward into a full horizontal dive, airborne and parallel to the grass, meeting the ball with a thumping header a split second before César's outstretched gloves could reach it.

He drove the header down into the turf, skipping it past the keeper's dive and tucking it neatly inside the near post.

Vardy slammed hard onto the grass, landing flush on his ribs. The sheer impact knocked the wind right out of him, and he rolled onto his back, staring up at the bright floodlights as his vision spun.

For a brief heartbeat, the entire stadium seemed suspended in time.

The ball hit the back of the net, the Schalke bench exploded to its feet, and Vardy pushed himself up on one elbow to double-check the goal line.

The ball was resting in the corner.

Fweet—!

2-0, Schalke.

Mateo reached him first, dropping down to one knee on the grass and resting a hand on Vardy's shoulder. Vardy was wheezing and clutching his side, but a massive grin was already spreading across his face.

"What on earth was that?" Mateo asked with a laugh.

"Bloody hell, I don't know," Vardy gasped, grinning through the pain.

"You literally took flight."

"I had to! The keeper was about to punch my head off if I waited for it to bounce."

Huntelaar arrived with a roar, followed by Annan, Jones, and Rakitić, before Metzelder ran all the way from the back to join the huddle. They dragged Vardy to his feet, swarming him in celebration.

A heavy silence settled over the fifty thousand home supporters. They stood in disbelief, watching an English striker they had never heard of celebrate his first European goal.

Up in the commentary booth, Tom Warrick adjusted his headset. "GOALLL.... Jamie Vardy with a fearless diving header off a sublime chip from Mateo Silva. That is a goal you expect from a world-class finisher in the form of his life. Six weeks ago, this guy was playing in English non-league football. Incredible scenes."

Down on the Valencia touchline, Unai Emery stood motionless, staring at the pitch with a tight, stone-faced expression as his tactical game plan came unraveled for the second time in twenty minutes.

"Coach. What do we do?"

Emery took a slow breath before answering in a low, determined voice. "We keep playing our football."

He checked the stadium clock. Sixty-eight minutes remained. His team was two goals down at home in front of a stunned crowd, looking over at the scoreboard in disbelief. Emery clapped his hands sharply, stepping up to the white line to bark new defensive instructions.

His players responded, picking their heads up to regroup.

Vardy jogged back toward the center circle alongside Mateo, still rubbing his aching ribs.

"I definitely owe you a pint for that one, mate," Vardy chuckled.

"You owe me two," Mateo replied with a smirk. "One for the assist, and another because I will have to explain to Magath why our striker is covered in bruises all week."

Vardy let out a breathy laugh. He was going to feel that crash landing in the morning, but he could not care less right now.

Over on the Schalke bench, Felix Magath sat back down into his seat, rubbing his chin as he looked out over the pitch. Hughes Yves stood beside him, shaking his head in disbelief.

"I still don't believe what I just watched," Hughes Yves muttered, dropping his hands onto the dugout railing. "The boy scored a world-class solo goal, and now Vardy throws himself through the air like a madman."

Magath let out a low, slow breath, resting his hands flat on his knees. "That is what happens when you have players who don't overthink their moments."

"Do you want to pull back and sit on the lead?"

"Not yet," Magath said, his eyes fixed on Emery across the pitch. "Valencia are rattled, but they aren't dead. Sit down, Hughes. We have seventy minutes left to manage."

Hughes took his seat beside him with a quiet nod.

Twenty-two minutes in, and Schalke were suddenly sitting on a two-goal lead at the Mestalla, carried by an attacking partnership that had barely spent a month sharing the same pitch.
