Frankfurt came back immediately.

Stiel Hall made no substitutions. He didn't reorganise. What he did was louder, visible on the touchline, directing with both arms, pushing his players to press higher and commit more bodies forward. The response to going 3–2 down was to attack harder, which was either brave or desperate depending on how the next ten minutes went.

It created problems.

With Frankfurt pressing high and committing forward, the spaces behind their defensive line were larger than they'd been all match. Schalke couldn't always exploit them, they were defending under real pressure, Per Kluge covering constantly, the back four dealing with Frankfurt's physical forwards, but the territory was there. The shape was there. Magath could see it from the touchline.

What he couldn't count on was Uchida holding the right flank much longer.

Altıntop had been running at him since the second half began, and Uchida - one yellow card, exhausted, carrying the physical weight of seventy minutes against one of the faster wingers in the Bundesliga was operating on caution rather than aggression. He was showing Altıntop inside, retreating, managing rather than competing. Which was the correct professional response to his card situation.

It was also leaving the right channel vulnerable.

At 52 minutes, Altıntop received out wide, drove at Uchida, and crossed first-time before Uchida could close. The ball floated to the near post - Lord attacked it, got his head on it cleanly. Neuer had already moved, reading the trajectory, and punched it firmly away. The clearance fell to Kittel on the edge of the box.

Kittel shot immediately, no touch to set, just transferred the energy of the ball into a first-time drive aimed for the top corner.

The contact was marginally wrong. The ball curved over the crossbar, striking the advertising hoarding behind the goal.

The Commerzbank-Arena exhaled.

Tom, in the booth: "Kittel - almost. The contact was slightly under the ball, which sent it too high. Had that gone in it would have been an exceptional finish." A pause. "Schalke are holding, but the pressure is genuine. Frankfurt are creating, they're just not converting."

Magath made his decision at fifty-eight minutes.

He watched Uchida defending another Altıntop run, showing him inside again, the same retreat and went to Hughes Yves.

"Farfán. Now."

Hughes Yves had the board ready. The number went up.

Farfán came to the touchline, received his instructions from Magath directly.

"Altıntop. Stay with him. Don't give him space to cross. A yellow card is acceptable — just don't let him deliver from that position." Magath pointed briefly at the right channel. "Track him everywhere."

"Understood."

"And when we have the ball, go forward. Don't hold the line. If there's space, take it."

Farfán nodded and stepped onto the pitch.

Uchida jogged off, the specific relief of a player who has been hanging on and has just been told he can stop. He'd done his job - 70 minutes of containment under physical pressure with a yellow card in his pocket. He'd kept Frankfurt from the byline more often than not. He'd managed the situation rather than won it, which was sometimes exactly what the situation required.

He sat down on the bench.

The substitution changed the texture of the right side.

Farfán was fresher and less inhibited. He'd seen Altıntop for sixty-plus minutes without being on the pitch, which gave him a kind of analytical distance Uchida no longer had, he knew which way Altıntop preferred to turn, where he held the ball when tired, when the dribble was a real threat and when it was a feint.

He was also willing to foul.

The first time Altıntop received in a dangerous position with Farfán on him, a ball played in behind the defensive line, Altıntop turning to drive - Farfán came through him from the side. Clean contact on the ball but with enough body that Altíntop went down. Yellow card for Farfán.

He accepted it without complaint.

Altıntop got up, slightly frustrated. The foul had stopped a genuine chance. He looked at Farfán and saw a player who had made the calculation: one yellow, managed carefully, was the correct trade for keeping Frankfurt off the byline for the last thirty minutes.

After that, Altıntop was more careful. He held the ball longer before driving, looking for the angle that Farfán's positioning didn't cover. Which meant he was slower. Which meant Schalke's right side had time to organise.

The waves didn't stop. Frankfurt were pushing everything forward now - full-backs overlapping, wingers inverting, Kittel and Zavilas both arriving late into the box when crosses came in. Neuer was working. He caught two crosses in the sixty-fifth minute and the sixty-eighth, both decisive and clean. He distributed quickly each time, getting Schalke moving before Frankfurt could reset.

Tom watched the shape: "Schalke are sitting deep but they're organised. The counter-attacking threat is still there, the runs from Raúl and Mateo haven't stopped even when Schalke have the ball in their own half. Frankfurt know this and they're pressing carefully. But that carefulness is costing them forward momentum."

Seventy-five minutes.

Frankfurt's intensity had been dropping for five minutes, the physical cost of seventy-five minutes of press-and-attack in a 10-versus-10 match making itself felt. Their runs were slightly shorter, their press arriving slightly later, their defensive recoveries taking one extra second.

Neuer collected a long-range effort that had no real conviction behind it, a shot from thirty metres, the kind of attempt that players made when they were searching for something to happen rather than believing it would. He caught it at waist height, looked up, and found Farfán on the right with a quick underarm throw.

Farfán had the ball inside Frankfurt's half almost before Frankfurt's midfield had registered the transition.

Magath, on the touchline, raised both arms.

Counter.

Frankfurt's back line was still adjusting from the attack. Zavilas was recovering, fifteen metres behind his defensive line. Russ was ahead of Fährmann but facing the wrong way. Two centre-backs trying to backpedal and organise simultaneously.

Farfán drove forward. Altıntop was tracking, still close, but Farfán had the angle and the pace. Mateo had already moved, dropping slightly to create the passing option, the familiar position from training and from matches, the half-space between Frankfurt's midfield and defensive line.

Ahead of them: space and a goal.

The counter was on.
