Chapter 102: Chapter 102
Ethan looked up from his laptop when he saw Calvin climb up from the carpet in the living room. He tracked the boy as he wandered over to Lane, who was also buried in her work.
He couldn’t take his eyes off them. Watching them together felt like a warm hand resting on his heart. He was buzzing with a quiet joy now that he and Lane had finally made up.
His only prayer now was for Calvin to know him as his dad. He and Lane hadn’t hashed it out yet. They hadn’t talked about when she would break the news to their son, but he knew they’d get there.
She was probably just prepping the kid so it wouldn’t be a total shock. The main thing was that they were good, and he knew for a fact she still loved him.
Damn. Looking back at all the crap he’d pulled, Ethan knew he’d been far from a good guy. He’d expected karma to finally bite him in the ass, but instead, fate had played nice. Fate was actually being kind to him.
"Mommy?"
Lane dropped everything to focus on Calvin. Ethan had noticed this about her a long time ago: when it came to her work versus her son, the kid won every single time.
Even when she was buried in deadlines, if her phone buzzed and it was her boy, she picked up immediately. He really admired that about her. To Lane, family was everything. Family came before the hustle.
"Yes?" Lane asked softly.
He saw the boy gesture for her to lean in. Ethan arched an eyebrow, his curiosity piqued as the kid whispered something in his mommy’s ear. Lane gave a little nod.
"Thank you, Mommy," Calvin said.
Lane just smiled. "Just wait a second, okay?"
"Yes, Mommy," Calvin chirped before heading back to his spot on the carpet.
Ethan watched Lane get up and head for the kitchen. Unable to help himself, he stood up and followed her.
"Lane," he called out.
She stopped and turned to look at him. "W-why?" she asked, her voice hitching slightly.
He noticed she still seemed a little jumpy around him, which made him sigh. He closed the gap until there was only a step between them.
"What did Calvin say to you?" he asked once he was close.
"He asked for a bottle of milk," she said.
"Oh," he replied.
"I’ll just go make it," Lane said. She didn’t wait for a comeback and kept walking. Instead of heading back to the living room, he trailed after her.
When she mentioned making milk, he assumed she meant in a glass. He was caught off guard when he saw her reaching for a baby bottle.
"He still uses that?" he asked before he could stop himself.
Lane glanced back at him. "Yeah. But only every once in a while, when he’s really craving milk," she explained.
Once the bottle was ready, they headed back to the living room. Ethan noticed Calvin’s cheeks turn bright red the second he saw his mom and Ethan walking in together.
It was pretty clear the kid was embarrassed about still using a bottle.
"It’s okay, Calvin. You don’t have to feel shy around me," Ethan said gently.
"Okay," the boy mumbled.
Lane handed him the bottle. "Thank you, Mommy," he said.
"You’re welcome," she replied.
Lane sat back down and got back into the zone with her laptop. Ethan did the same. They both got lost in their work for a while, but eventually, Ethan looked up and saw Lane heading toward Calvin again.
He followed her gaze and realized the little guy had crashed out.
She reached down to pick him up, but Ethan spoke before she could.
"Let me, Lane," he said. He was up in a flash and over by their side, lifting the sleeping boy easily.
"Take him to the room, Ethan," she whispered.
She walked beside him as they headed to the bedroom. "Just lay him down right here," she told him.
He carefully tucked the boy into bed while Lane adjusted the blanket. They lingered in the room for a second before heading back out to finish their work.
They stayed like that for a while longer until Lane stood up again. "I’m just going to go check on Calvin," she told him.
Ethan nodded. With her back in the bedroom, Ethan focused on his screen.
He knocked out the rest of his to-do list and did a final sweep of his emails for anything urgent. When he was finally done and Lane still hadn’t come back out, he decided to go check on her.
The second Ethan stepped into the room, the bathroom door swung open.
Lane stepped out, wrapped in nothing but a towel.
Ethan felt his entire body react instantly. He nearly cursed under his breath at the sight of her.
That was exactly how shocked Lane was when she stepped out of the bathroom and saw Ethan walking into the room.
Surprise was etched all over his face too. But once he got over the initial shock, his dark eyes clouded over with a heavy intensity.
She could see the raw hunger in his gaze.
She swallowed hard, her heart hammering against her ribs. Lane averted her eyes and tried to make a break for her closet to get dressed.
If she’d known he was coming in, she would’ve changed in the bathroom. She’d only hopped in the shower after checking on Calvin and definitely didn’t expect Ethan to barge in. Now, he’d probably think she was trying to seduce him on purpose.
Fate, however, had other plans. As she took a step, the knot in her towel, the only thing covering her, gave way. It was too late to catch it.
The towel hit the floor, leaving her completely exposed. Lane’s eyes went wide in disbelief. For some reason, instead of diving for the towel, she found herself looking right back at Ethan.
Her lips parted and her cheeks burned as she saw him staring. The desire in his eyes was unmistakable now.
"Fuck it, Lane," he growled.
Her heart raced as Ethan closed the gap between them in a single stride. He cupped her face and crashed his lips onto hers in a desperate, passionate kiss.
His tongue slid into her mouth, and she clung to his arms as he explored every inch of her. When he sucked on her tongue, she couldn’t hold back a moan.
The sensation was overwhelming. Giving in completely, she parted her lips and let him take control.
She started kissing him back with just as much heat. Ethan deepened the kiss even further, backing her up until her skin hit the hard, cold surface of the wall.
He pinned her there, his mouth never leaving hers. Lane gripped his shoulders for support as he kissed her like there was no tomorrow. The sheer longing in his touch left her breathless, her lips already starting to swell from the intensity.
Another moan escaped her when Ethan squeezed her breast.
She gasped for air as he pulled away to kiss her neck, his mouth trailing down to her nipple before taking it into his mouth. Her body arched, burning with a desire so sharp she felt the dampness between her legs.
Ethan moved between her breasts with a desperate hunger, kneading one while he tasted the other. He gave them both equal, worshipful attention.
When she felt him start to slide down, she quickly grabbed his shoulder to stop him. She glanced toward the bed where Calvin was still sound asleep. Ethan looked up, his eyes hazy with lust.
"C-Calvin might wake up," she whispered. It wasn’t that she didn’t want him. She was craving this, but she was terrified her son might wake up and see them.
Ethan seemed to get it. He stood up, and for a second, she thought they were done. Instead, he scooped her up.
Her hands flew to his shoulders, and she wrapped her legs around his waist. He carried her out of the room and into the living room. Luckily, Mae had already headed home to her family.
Instead of putting her on the sofa, Ethan sat down with her in his lap.
She felt him pressing hard against her, and the heat between them spiked. Ethan captured her lips again, and she met him with equal fire.
It was a battle of tongues, neither of them willing to back down. She couldn’t help herself. She started grinding her hips against him. Even through his clothes, she could feel how much he wanted her.
