Chapter 122: Chapter 122

After speaking with Morgan, Ethan immediately left the hospital to head back to the mansion. He considered calling Lane to let her know he was coming home, but he decided against it. He wanted to surprise Lane and Calvin with his return.

Ethan was excited to go home because he longed to see, hug, and be with his wife and child. He missed them dearly, even though it had only been two days since he last saw them. Even just an hour without Lane and Calvin felt like an eternity to him.

He wanted to be with them to ease the heaviness in his heart caused by the troubling thoughts about what was happening and what might happen once the results of his investigations came in.

Ethan let out a deep sigh and shook his head to clear his mind. He wanted to have a clear head first. He then focused his attention on driving.

It wasn’t long before Ethan arrived at his mansion.

After parking the car in the garage, he immediately got out and quickly stepped inside. He headed straight to the second floor to see Lane and Calvin.

Ethan smiled as he opened the bedroom door, expecting to see them. He also expected that when his child heard his voice, he would run toward him.

But when he opened the door, none of his expectations were met because Lane and Calvin were not in the room.

Ethan thought that maybe they were in Calvin’s room. So instead of entering his room, he stepped back out and headed toward his child’s room.

He smiled again, but that smile disappeared when he saw that they weren’t there either.

Where could they be?

Ethan went downstairs and looked for Lily.

"Clara, where are Lane and Calvin?" he asked when he saw her.

"Sir Ethan, Ma’am Lane and Calvin haven’t come home since last night," clara replied.

Ethan couldn’t help but frown at what Clara told him. But after a while, he thought that maybe they were at Lane’s condo.

He just nodded to Clara. He couldn’t help but feel disappointed. He was expecting to see his wife and child, but they weren’t there.

And in the next moment, Ethan was in his car and on his way to Lane’s condo.

It wasn’t long before he arrived at the building where her condo was located. Once he got out, he immediately stepped inside the building.

Ethan smiled again as he pressed the doorbell. But the smile slowly faded from his face as he stood there for several minutes with no one opening the door for him.

He rang the doorbell again, thinking it might not have been heard, but after several more minutes, no one opened the door for him, so he decided to use Lane’s passcode. He knew the condo’s passcode because Lane had told him.

As soon as the door unlocked, he rushed inside.

"Lane?" he called out. "Calvin, son?"

Receiving no response, he ventured further into the room. But his family was not there either.

At that moment, he couldn’t quite explain the anxiety gripping his heart.

Ethan pulled out his cellphone from his pants pocket. After that, he called Lane. But it just kept ringing. She wasn’t answering his call. And his anxiety nearly doubled when he could no longer reach Lane’s number. He wasn’t sure if her phone had died or if she had intentionally turned it off to avoid his calls.

His heart pounded as he hurried into the room. He immediately moved toward their drawer. Ethan breathed a sigh of relief upon seeing that his family’s clothes were still there.

Lane sat up straight in the backseat when they arrived at the building where her condo was located. It was nearly evening by the time they returned from their outing. The four of them hadn’t just gone to Havens. After going there, Ava suggested they visit the amusement park because she knew her friends wanted to cheer up Calvin, who was visibly sad.

Earlier, Noah asked her what exactly happened, and she recounted the events to him.

Noah noticeably clenched his jaw as she recounted the events, and she could feel his annoyance towards Ethan because initially, she was the one being hurt, and now it was her son.

Lane found herself defending Ethan. She urged him to understand Ethan, considering what he was dealing with regarding his son Tyler.

He couldn’t bring himself to leave Tyler, possibly out of guilt. Perhaps Ethan was trying to prevent Tyler from repeating his past actions. And truthfully, she found it hard to believe Tyler could do such a thing, that he could hurt himself by drinking spoiled milk to get Ethan’s attention.

She considered that it might have been someone else’s doing, possibly Olivia’s.

But she quickly dismissed the thought as impossible. No mother would want to see her child in pain.

After parking the car, Noah got out to open the door for them.

"Thank you," she said as she and Calvin exited the car.

"I’ll walk you upstairs, Lane," he offered. She shook her head in reply.

"No need, Noah. We can manage," she replied.

"Are you sure?"

Lane nodded in agreement. "Thank you. And take care, you and Ava," she said to him.

Noah nodded at her response. Then, he glanced down at her son. "Calvin, cheer up, all right?" Noah said.

"Yes, Uncle," he replied to Noah.

Noah bid them farewell, and they waved to Anna, who waved back. Once Noah’s car had left, she and Calvin finally entered the building. They headed straight to the floor where her condo was situated.

And soon after, Lane halted when she noticed who was outside her condo. She glanced down at her son as he tightened his grip on her hand, staring ahead.

He was looking at his father who was leaning against the wall beside the door of their condo as if waiting for someone. Lane knew he was waiting for them.

Lane wondered why Calvin didn’t call out to his father or let go of her hand to run toward him, but instead stayed by her side.

After a while, it seemed that Ethan sensed their presence because he looked up.

The relief in his eyes was evident when he saw them. He moved away from leaning against the wall and immediately stepped toward them.

But then he stopped in his tracks when he saw what Calvin did next.

When Calvin saw his father approaching them, he clung to Lane. When she looked down, he raised both his hands toward her.

She immediately understood what he meant. He wanted to be carried by her. So she did what he wanted. As soon as she lifted Calvin, he buried his face in her neck.

She looked at Ethan and saw the pain in his eyes as he watched his son’s actions.

But after recovering from the shock, he immediately stepped toward them.

"Calvin, let Daddy carry you," he said to his son. As he was about to take Calvin from her arms, she felt Calvin tighten his grip around her neck, indicating he didn’t want to be carried by Ethan.

When Ethan looked up at her, she noticed the mix of sadness and pain on his face.

Lane gave him a reassuring smile, indicating that everything would be okay.

.....

She followed Ethan with her eyes when she saw him approaching Calvin, who was quietly sitting on the sofa, busy sipping the bottle of milk she had prepared for him.

"Calvin, son," Ethan said, catching his attention. She watched Calvin look up at his daddy.

"I’m sorry, son," he apologized as their eyes met.

"I’m sorry if I let you down or broke my promise. But if everything goes okay, cross my heart, I will stay by your side. Then, let’s all go to the amusement park together, you, your mommy, and me. Don’t you want to ride the Ferris wheel?"

"I’ve already ridden it," Calvin replied after a while.

"With your mom?" Ethan asked, noticing how Calvin’s face brightened.

The child nodded. "And with Uncle Noah," he added.

Because she was looking at Ethan, she saw him pause when he heard Calvin mention who had accompanied them.

"Mommy?" Calvin called to her after a while.

She cleared her throat. "Yes?"

"I’m sleepy, Mommy. I want to sleep now," he added.

Lane was momentarily unable to move at what her son said because she knew it was just an excuse. It seemed he was really sulking.

Lane took a deep breath before approaching her son. When he raised his arms, she immediately picked him up.

She glanced at Ethan, who was silent. "I’ll put him to sleep first," she told him. "Calvin, say good night to your daddy."

"Good night," he softly said to his daddy.

Ethan stood up and leaned in to kiss his son on the top of his head.

"Good night, Calvin. I love you, always remember that."

They stepped into the room, and she carefully laid Calvin on the bed. At that moment, she wanted to talk to her son about his behavior toward his Daddy, but she decided to leave it for tomorrow. She knew her son was tired.

"Good night, Mommy. I love you."

"Good night, Calvin. I love you more."

Lane waited for Calvin to fall asleep. When she saw that he was sleeping soundly, she left the room to return to Ethan.

She felt a pang in her heart when she saw the sadness still etched on Ethan’s face, as if the weight of the world were on his shoulders.

She stepped closer, and when he felt her presence, he looked up at her. She noticed the redness in his eyes. When she saw that, she immediately approached Ethan and hugged him.

Her heart broke when she felt Ethan’s shoulders shaking. "I’m sorry if I failed, Lane," he apologized in a trembling voice. She gently stroked his back.

"Give Calvin some time, he’s just feeling hurt and upset," she told him.

"He seems upset because he thought you forgot to pick him up on the day you told him you would."

"I told Mae to tell Calvin why I couldn’t pick him up."

"Mae forgot to pick up Calvin, Ethan," she informed him.

Lane noticed Ethan was taken aback. He pulled away from her embrace.

"What do you mean?" he asked, looking up, the redness still visible in his eyes.

She repeated what she said, causing his brows to furrow.

"What? Calvin waited there alone?"

"What? Calvin waited there alone?" His voice was filled with anger.

"His teacher was there when I went to fetch him."

"Oh God! My Calvin, he was waiting for me there all alone?"

"That’s probably why he’s upset with you. He thinks you forgot him. But I already explained everything to him. Let’s just wait for him to process it all. I know Calvin, he will understand."

"This is my fault, Lane," he said in a choked voice.

Lane sat down next to Ethan. Then she held his hand and gently squeezed it. "I’m not blaming you, Ethan.

"I’ll talk to Calvin tomorrow, Lane. I will explain my side to him."

Lane just squeezed Ethan’s hand in response.

"Daddy, I’m already full," Tyler said while he was feeding him.

"You’re full?" he asked again. Tyler nodded.

"Okay," he said as he cleared his dishes.

"You should eat too, Ethan," Olivia said after a while. When he looked up at her, he noticed something unusual. The anxiety he saw in her expression yesterday was gone. Her face had brightened. He also noticed something else, but he just couldn’t pinpoint what it was. "Join me."

"I’m still full," Ethan replied. Even though he was hungry, he chose not to join her. Not because he didn’t want to, but because he just wanted to distance himself.

"By the way, Olivia. Has any doctor come by?" he asked. "Didn’t they say when Tyler will be discharged?" He thought Tyler was okay since he noticed his appetite returning to normal and his energy picking up.

Olivia didn’t answer for a moment. "Not yet. But when the doctor makes rounds, I’ll ask," she replied.

He was about to speak when he was interrupted by his phone.

He took it out of his pocket and became serious when he saw who was calling. Instead of answering, he excused himself to Tyler. When Tyler nodded, he stepped out of the room.

He moved a bit further away before answering the call from the private investigator he had hired to investigate the man. This was the same investigator he had previously hired to find Lane.

"Hello," he said.

"Sir Ethan," the voice on the other end said.

"Is there any update on the investigation?" Ethan asked.

"Yes, Sir," the investigator replied. "I’ve already sent it to your email."

In truth, there was only one thing he wanted to know. He wanted to know if the man had any connection to Olivia, so that was the first thing he asked.

"Does the man have any connection to Olivia?"

"Nothing, Sir Ethan," the man replied. "The two don’t know each other. The man only goes to the hospital because he has a child he’s visiting there. In room 503."

Ethan couldn’t help but frown. "Okay," he replied.

"Okay, Sir Ethan. If you have any questions, just call me."

Instead of responding, he ended the call. His expression still hadn’t changed.

He continued walking, but not toward Tyler’s room.

Ethan stopped when he reached his destination. He read the number written on the door.

Room 503.

He raised his hand to knock three times. He waited. After a while, the door opened, and an elderly woman came out.

"Good morning," Ethan greeted politely.

"Can I help you, young man?" she asked.

"I just wanted to ask if the patient inside is a child?" he inquired.

She shook her head. "There’s no child here. My husband is the patient," she replied.

"I see. Thank you, and I apologize for the inconvenience."

When the elderly woman moved away, the smile disappeared from Ethan’s face, and he clenched his fist in anger.

He went there to confirm if the private investigator’s report was true. He had had doubts when he heard about the man’s visit to the hospital to see his supposedly confined child.

Ethan hadn’t mentioned it to the investigator. He only instructed him to find out who the man was and his connection to Olivia after he secretly took his photo.

The investigator’s response immediately raised doubts.

Ethan was right. His private investigator was deceiving him.

His knuckles turned white. Right now, he wasn’t just mad. He was livid.
