Chapter 130: Chapter 130
It felt like Ethan’s heart stopped when he heard what Noah said over the phone.
"They... were what?" he asked, his voice tight.
"They’re at the hospital," came the reply.
He was momentarily stunned. Once he recovered from the shock, he asked Noah which hospital Lane had been taken to.
As soon as he found out, he hung up without a word. He grabbed his car keys from his bedside table.
"What happened, Ethan?" he heard Adam ask a moment later. "Who’s in the hospital?"
"My wife," Ethan replied. "I have to leave, Adam.
I’ll call you later." He didn’t wait for a response, stepping out of the office to head to the hospital.
Ethan was consumed by anxiety and worry, not even stopping to ask what happened or how she was doing.
He knew Lane had left the office because she had called to say she was grabbing lunch with Ava.
John had also called to say he had dropped her off at the restaurant and that Lane had told him to head home since Ava would take her back later. He also learned that Ava was the only one with Lane at the restaurant.
If he had known, he never would have let her go, or he would have joined them.
Ethan prayed fervently that nothing bad had happened. He couldn’t bear the thought of losing Lane.
As he often said, she was his air, and without her, he wouldn’t be able to breathe.
Ethan practically ran out of the building. He noticed employees glancing at him but paid them no mind, not stopping until he was outside. He was only a few meters from his car when he pressed the unlock button on his key. It beeped, and he covered the distance in one stride, diving into the driver’s seat and speeding off.
He drove as fast as his racing heart, consumed by worry. His mind raced with all sorts of thoughts, but he steeled himself and prayed.
It wasn’t long before Ethan arrived at the hospital.
He parked haphazardly in the lot, focused only on seeing Lane. He hurried inside and immediately asked where she had been taken. When he learned they were in the emergency room, he ran there.
As he entered, he scanned the room until he spotted Lane sitting on a hospital bed. He saw Ava sitting on the bed next to her, with Noah standing between them. He barely noticed the others, his eyes fixed solely on Lane.
"Lane!" he called out.
She looked up, her lips parting in surprise. Soon, her eyes welled up, and tears began to fall. He bridged the gap in a single stride. Reaching her, he sat on the edge of the bed and pulled her into a tight hug.
He soon loosened his embrace, remembering she might be hurt. He let go and carefully checked her for injuries, spotting only a bump on her forehead.
"Are you okay? Does anything hurt? Any wounds? Bruises? Blood?" he asked in rapid succession. Even after checking, he wanted to be certain he hadn’t missed anything.
She wiped the tears from her eyes. "I’m... fine, Ethan," she replied.
"You’re fine? Did the doctor say so?" he asked again. "Has the doctor checked on you yet? Have you been tested? Are the results in?"
He turned to Noah as he spoke.
"The doctor said they’re fine, Ethan. Just some bruises. But for our peace of mind, the doctor ordered more tests just to make sure," Noah answered.
Even though Noah said they were okay, Ethan was still worried. If the results weren’t out yet, what if there was internal damage?
"Are there no results yet?" he asked, needing to know.
"Not yet. I think they’ll be out soon," Noah added.
He turned his focus back to Lane. When their eyes met, his expression softened.
"What happened, love?" he asked gently.
"We were on our way home when a car overtook us. I think the driver was drunk because he forced us off the road," Lane replied.
Ethan’s jaw clenched with intense anger. "Did you get the plate number?" he asked, wanting to track the driver down.
Lane shook her head. "No. The driver sped off quickly, and Ava and I panicked, so we couldn’t see the plate clearly," she replied.
He was about to speak when the female doctor entered the room.
"The test results are out," she said as she approached.
"What’s the result, Doc?" he asked.
"The results are fine," she replied, "and the baby is fine too."
"The baby?"
"What baby?" Ethan and Noah asked in unison.
Lane’s lips parted in surprise. She noticed the doctor glancing back and forth between the two men. Both of them looked completely confused.
When the accident happened, someone had called 911 after witnessing the crash.
An ambulance quickly arrived to take them to the hospital. She and Ava were grateful to God that they hadn’t suffered any serious injuries, just the bump on her forehead from hitting the dashboard. Ava had the same injury.
When they arrived at the hospital, her phone had rung. It was Noah, asking if she was with Ava since he couldn’t reach her.
She confirmed it. She hadn’t planned on telling him they were at the hospital, but she had seen Ava shaking her head while she was on the phone.
However, she couldn’t help it when Noah overheard the doctor’s voice in the background, so she ended up telling him where they were.
He had immediately asked which hospital, and when she told him, he hung up. She knew he would come, as she could sense the urgency in his voice.
It seemed Noah had called Ethan too, as they had arrived at the hospital almost simultaneously.
"What baby are you talking about, Doc?" Ethan asked.
Lane looked at Ava and noticed the anxiety on her face. It seemed she really didn’t want Noah to know she was pregnant.
If the doctor answered, Noah would find out. Lane wanted to tell Noah the truth, but she knew she wasn’t in a position to speak for Ava.
Lane took a deep, calming breath. She knew the baby the doctor was referring to was hers. Before the doctor could answer, Lane spoke up.
"It’s our baby, Ethan," she replied.
She hadn’t planned on revealing the pregnancy this way, wanting it to be a wedding surprise, but she decided to reveal it now to help Ava.
Ethan’s eyes widened as he looked at her.
"You... what?"
"I’m pregnant, Ethan," she replied.
He didn’t respond right away, just stared at her. But when her words finally sank in, he turned to the doctor, desperate to know his baby was okay.
"How are my wife and baby, Doc? Are they really okay?"
"They are okay and healthy," the doctor replied. After that, she looked at Ava. She saw Ava subtly shaking her head at the doctor. Hopefully, the doctor caught on to what Ava was trying to convey.
"What about her, Doc?" Noah asked, his voice filled with concern.
Ava shook her head at the doctor again. She knew Noah didn’t notice because he was focused on the doctor.
"She’s fine as well."
It seemed the doctor understood, because that was all she said. Ava let out a sigh of relief.
"Lane."
She shifted her gaze to Ethan.
"Did you just find out you’re pregnant?" he asked.
She didn’t answer immediately, then shook her head. "A week ago," she replied.
Lane blinked rapidly at the serious expression on Ethan’s face.
...
Lane kept glancing at him. Ever since they left the hospital, she had noticed Ethan’s silence.
Since she and Ava were okay, the doctor allowed them to leave.
They were originally going to take Ava to her condo, but Noah volunteered to drive her.
Lane still wanted to talk to her friend about what really happened and whether there was a secret relationship between them.
Honestly, she hadn’t noticed anything unusual. Maybe they were just really good at hiding it, or perhaps she was just too oblivious to notice.
Ethan had been talking earlier, but once they were alone, she noticed his silence.
It seemed he was upset that she had hidden her pregnancy from him. When he found out she had known for a week, she noticed a distinct change in his demeanor and the seriousness in his expression.
She wanted to explain, but decided to wait until they got home so she could do it properly.
It wasn’t long before they arrived at the mansion. He parked the car, then got out without a word.
Lane pouted, watching him walk around to her side. He seemed really upset, though perhaps he just needed some affection.
After a moment, the door opened. Even though he was angry, he still managed to assist her by extending his hand.
Lane accepted it, and Ethan helped her step down. They walked into the mansion together. He was so attentive it was as if he wanted to carry her. As they entered, she heard Calvin’s voice calling her name.
"Mommy!"
She looked up and saw him running toward her. Her lips parted in surprise when she saw he was crying. When he reached her, he hugged her legs.
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Aunt Catherine and Uncle Victor stepping closer. It seemed they were the ones who had picked Calvin up from school.
"Why are you crying, Calvin?" she asked, looking down at her son.
He looked up at her, tears in his eyes.
"I’m sorry, Lane. I told Calvin what happened to you when he asked why we picked him up. He cried a lot when he found out," Aunt Catherine explained.
"Mommy, are you okay?" Calvin asked.
"Mommy is okay," Lane replied.
She saw Calvin reach for her face. She was about to bend down, but Ethan stopped her. He looked at her with questioning eyes, then lifted their son so he could reach her easily. Calvin touched the bump on her forehead.
"Mommy, what is this?"
"Mommy just has a bump, but I’m okay now," she said. She held his cheeks.
"Don’t worry, okay?" she reassured him gently.
Instead of answering, he hugged her neck, pulling her closer to Ethan, who was carrying him.
She glanced at Ethan, but he quickly averted his gaze. She blinked in surprise.
"What happened?" Aunt Catherine asked after a moment.
"Mom, I’ll tell you later. Lane needs to rest right now," Ethan said.
"She needs to rest, especially since she’s pregnant."
Aunt Catherine’s eyes widened, then filled with excitement. "You’re pregnant, Lane?"
"Yes," she replied.
Aunt Catherine smiled. "Victor, we’re going to have another grandchild!"
Uncle Victor smiled, happy with the news.
"Mommy, am I going to be a brother?" Calvin asked.
"Yes," she replied.
"Yay!" Calvin exclaimed, thrilled to have a sibling.
"Calvin, stay with Grandma and Grandpa. I’m going to take Mommy upstairs so she can rest," Ethan said.
"Okay, Daddy," Calvin replied.
Calvin hopped down and went to his grandmother.
"Lane, let’s go," Ethan said. He seemed upset, not using his usual pet name.
He took her elbow and guided her to the second floor. As they climbed, his hand remained on her back as if she were made of glass.
When they reached the bedroom, he opened the door and assisted her inside.
Once they reached the bed, he let her go.
"Rest now, Lane. I’m going to go talk to Mom and Dad." He kissed her forehead, then turned to walk away.
He hadn’t taken a step before she hugged him from behind.
"I’m sorry," she whispered.
He remained silent. Lane pouted, then grinned, an idea forming to get him to talk.
Her hand, wrapped around his waist, slowly moved down toward his groin. She felt him tense up.
"What are you doing?"
