Chapter 34: Chapter 34

The heavy towel slipped from Lane’s fingers, pooling over her shoulder as the silence in the bedroom stretched to a sudden, absolute breaking point.

The air in the room felt thick, charged with a suffocating heat that had nothing to do with the fading steam trailing out from the open bathroom door. Ethan stood just inside the threshold of the master suite, his hand still resting firmly on the heavy brass handle. He had traded his usual structured executive suit jacket for a dark dress shirt, the top buttons completely undone, his dark hair slightly unkempt from a long, brutal day at the Blackwood corporate tower.

But it was his eyes that kept Lane completely rooted to the hardwood floor.

They weren’t the dismissive, looking-past-her daggers she had grown accustomed to over the agonizing months of this marriage. Tonight, they were dark, intense, and heavily focused on her with an unyielding concentration. His gaze tracked the damp trail of a stray water droplet as it slid lazily down the side of her neck, disappearing beneath the collar of her soft, loose silk button-up.

Lane’s breath hitched sharply. She felt entirely exposed in her bare skin, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She desperately wanted to break the spell, to look away or say something to diffuse the mounting tension, but her body utterly refused to cooperate with her mind.

Slowly, deliberately, Ethan let go of the door handle. The heavy wood clicked shut behind him, sealing them inside the quiet sanctuary of the room.

He closed the distance between them with slow, measured strides. Every single step he took across the rug seemed to amplify the loud, erratic thumping in Lane’s chest. She instinctively took a half-step backward, her heels pressing against the edge of the plush rug, but she instantly ran out of room as he stepped directly into her personal space, cutting off the cool air of the bedroom entirely.

He stopped so close she could feel the radiating warmth of his body. The familiar, intoxicating scent of his premium cologne—cedarwood and sharp amber—mingled seamlessly with the sweet, clean aroma of her lavender soap.

"Ethan..." her voice was a breathless, fragile whisper, a plea she couldn’t fully finish.

Ethan didn’t answer with words. His expression remained entirely unreadable, masked in that familiar, unyielding stoicism. But his jaw was flexed so sharply that the bone showed beneath his skin.

The stubborn pride, the walls of resentment—everything that had kept them a universe apart for the past months seemed to fracture under the sheer, unbearable weight of the domestic intimacy pressing down on them.

Slowly, his large hand lifted into the space between them.

His long fingers slid into the damp, dark waves of her hair, his thumb brushing firmly against the flushed skin of her cheekbone. The stark contrast of his warm, slightly calloused hand against her cool skin sent a violent, electric shiver straight down her spine.

Lane’s eyelids fluttered, panic instantly flaring beneath her skin. She wasn’t ready for this. He had been so cold, so distant, and this sudden, unreadable intensity was terrifying.

"Don’t," she whispered, her hands rising instinctively to rest against his broad chest, her palms flattening against the dark, premium fabric of his shirt. She pushed against him, trying to create space, trying to re-establish the boundaries that kept her safe from him. "Ethan, stop."

He didn’t move. He felt like a solid wall of granite beneath her hands. His dark eyes narrowed, staring down at her face with a heavy, localized focus that made her head spin. He didn’t offer an explanation. He didn’t apologize for yesterday, or the months of silence, or the way he had ignored her. He remained entirely quiet, his grip on her hair tightening just enough to anchor her in place.

"Ethan, please," she tried again, her voice cracking slightly as she pushed against his chest a second time. Her fingers curled into the fabric, her arms trembling with the effort of resisting him.

But Ethan simply leaned down, his massive shadow completely enveloping her.

He didn’t say a word. He didn’t reassure her. He just closed the final inch between them, his face tilting as his lips brushed against the corner of her mouth, a quiet, demanding heat that sent a jolt of pure adrenaline through her veins.

Lane froze, her breath catching in her throat. She should pull away. She should turn her head, break the hold, and demand that he leave her side of the room. Every logical piece of her mind screamed at her to protect herself from the inevitable heartbreak that would follow the morning light.

But as his lips slid fully over hers, the stubborn resistance in her limbs began to fail.

Her fingers, which had been pushing him away, slowly lost their strength. The hard fabric of his shirt felt warm beneath her palms, and the rapid, heavy thud of his heartbeat rhythmically echoed her own. She loved him. God, she loved him so much it felt like an ache in her bones, a beautiful, tragic weakness that she couldn’t conquer no matter how hard she tried.

With a quiet, defeated sigh against his mouth, Lane stopped pushing. Her hands slid up his chest, her fingers tangling into the fabric of his shirt as she surrendered entirely to the weight of his touch.

When his lips finally fully claimed hers, it was a slow, deliberate, and deeply consuming kiss that completely stole the air from her lungs.

Ethan immediately used the moment her resistance broke to deepen the kiss, his other hand coming securely around her waist to pull her firmly against his chest. The space between them vanished into nothingness. The sheer, overwhelming hunger of months spent pretending they didn’t exist to one another poured into the touch. It was a dam breaking, reckless and fierce on his part, and utterly helpless on hers.

The kiss tasted of bittersweet relief and dangerous, terrifying hope. Ethan’s grip on her waist tightened, his fingers pressing into the silk of her shirt as if anchoring himself to her, while his lips moved against hers with an intense, unyielding focus that made Lane’s knees grow entirely weak.

She clung to his broad shoulders, completely losing herself in the warmth, the weight, and the absolute, undeniable reality of him finally holding her, even if it was just for tonight.

For a few suspended seconds, the entire world outside the walls of the master suite ceased to exist. There were no corporate titles, no shadows of the past, no lingering doubts about why they were in this house. There was only the heat of his mouth against hers and the desperate rhythm of their shared breaths.

When Ethan finally pulled back, it was agonizingly slow, his lips lingering against hers as if loath to let the connection fade entirely.

He didn’t break away completely; his forehead rested gently against hers, his breath coming in short, uneven, ragged gasps that matched her own. His expression was still intensely guarded, his dark eyes searching her face with a raw, fierce concentration that lacked his usual corporate mask, but offered no verbal comfort either. His thumb was still softly caressing her cheekbone, holding her face toward him.

Lane stared back up at him, her lips tingling from the force of his touch, her chest heaving as she tried to find her bearings. He was still the same unyielding, distant man she had married, but the suffocating frost in the room was entirely gone. In its place was a terrifying, beautiful chaos that neither of them knew how to fix, leaving them standing in the dim light, breathless and irrevocably changed.

Ethan did not drop his arms. Even as the initial, desperate rush of the kiss slowed, his large hand remained anchored at the small of her back, pressing her silk-clad frame directly against his rigid posture.

He didn’t speak a single word of comfort. There was no soft murmur to soothe the sudden, erratic gasps of her breath, no tender promise to erase the agonizing months of cold indifference. His face remained a mask of intense, dark concentration, his eyes tracking the frantic rise and fall of her chest.

Lane looked up at him through her eyelashes, her vision slightly blurred by the sudden, overwhelming rush of emotion. Her hands still trembled where they lay against his shoulders. She could feel the heavy, continuous thrum of his pulse beneath his skin, a silent testament to the fact that he was completely here, in this moment, entirely focused on her.

Yet, the absolute silence stretching between them felt heavier than any argument they had ever had.

"Ethan...." she whispered, the question escaping her lips before she could stop it. Her voice was small, carrying the exhaustion of a hundred lonely nights in this exact room.

Ethan’s jaw tightened. His eyes flicked down to her trembling mouth, then back up to meet her gaze. He didn’t answer. He simply shifted his weight, his grip on her waist tightening as he backed her up slowly, deliberately, toward the edge of the grand bed.

Panic flared in Lane’s chest again, a sudden realization of how utterly unprotected she was against him. She planted her palms firmly against his collarbones, trying once more to stall his momentum. "Ethan, don’t do this. Not like this."

He ignored her plea entirely. His movements were steady, unyielding, and driven by a quiet, dark impulse that he clearly had no intention of explaining to her. With every step backward she took, the distance between her and the mattress vanished until the back of her knees finally hit the soft structure of the bed.

She lost her balance slightly, sinking down onto the plush silk duvet. Before she could even think to scramble away or pull the blankets over her changing silhouette, Ethan hovered over her. He sank his knee into the mattress between her thighs, his forearms flattening against the sheets on either side of her head to support his heavy weight.

Lane looked up at him, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. In the dim, amber glow of the bedside lamp, his features looked incredibly sharp, cast in deep shadows that made him appear even more imposing. He looked down at her face, his gaze tracing the faint flush on her cheeks, the dark waves of her damp hair splayed across the white pillows, and the soft, loose fit of her pajamas.

Still, he said absolutely nothing. He didn’t tell her she was beautiful. He didn’t say he was sorry for missing the clinic appointment. He remained a beautiful, freezing enigma, offering nothing but his physical presence.

"Please," Lane murmured, her fingers curling into the sheets beside her head. She hated how weak her voice sounded, how completely transparent her love for him was in the dark."

Instead of retreating, Ethan leaned lower. His dark eyes locked onto hers with a sudden, fierce intensity that completely paralyzed her will to fight. He reached down with one hand, his long, warm fingers carefully wrapping around her wrist, pinning it gently but firmly against the mattress above her head.

Lane let out a soft, fractured gasp as his face tilted over hers once more.

When his lips crashed back down onto hers, the touch was vastly different from before. It was heavier, demanding, and laced with a silent, frustrated hunger that sent a wave of pure heat rushing straight to her core. He kissed her with an unyielding, territorial focus, his mouth sliding over hers with a deep, consuming rhythm that left her completely breathless.

Every instinct in Lane’s mind screamed at her to twist her head away, to fight the grip on her wrist and protect the remnants of her dignity. She knew that tomorrow morning, the corporate walls would go right back up. She knew he would look at her with the same detached, icy glare over the breakfast table. This night wouldn’t fix their broken arrangement. It wouldn’t magically turn him into a loving husband.

But as his free hand slid down her side, his palm resting heavily against the gentle, rounded curve of her stomach, the last line of her defense crumbled into dust.

A soft, defeated whimper escaped her throat against his mouth. She completely stopped resisting. Her free hand slid up the smooth fabric of his dress shirt, her fingers clawing into his shoulder as she pulled him down closer, surrendering entirely to the absolute, heartbreaking reality of her love for him. She loved him so much it felt like a sickness, a beautiful, tragic flaw that stripped away all her pride the moment he touched her.

Ethan caught the sound of her surrender, a low, guttural vibration echoing deep in his own chest. He released her wrist, his hand instantly moving to cradle the back of her head, his fingers tangling tightly into her damp curls to tilt her face exactly where he wanted it. The kiss deepened, becoming a slow, agonizingly intense exchange of breath and heat that completely erased the boundaries of the room.

He moved over her completely, his massive chest pressing against hers, his scent of cedarwood, amber, and rain completely enveloping her senses until she couldn’t think, couldn’t breathe, couldn’t remember anything but the weight of him. He mapped her body through the thin silk of her pajamas, his calloused palm tracing the line of her hip, the curve of her waist, and the protective fullness of her stomach, his touch heavy and entirely unyielding.
