Academy City Central District, 11 Lemes Avenue, [Quirky] Academy City Branch
"Sorry to disturb~"
Frank Hughes entered with a humble and polite smile, considering that it was not early from any perspective. Even though he had completely opened up the market in this city in the past half year, and queues were often necessary, the shop was still lively despite almost being closed for lunch all day, although it wasn’t as crowded as when Mo Tan visited the previous two times.
Standing by the counter, guiding a student on how to use the [Hair Vanishing Series · Type-7 Piranha Hair Clip], Ferry quickly noticed Mo Tan standing at the entrance. He enthusiastically raised his hand and greeted him: "Long time no see, Mr. Frank. We completed your previous order two days ago, are you here to inspect the goods?"
"If it is not a bother."
Mo Tan smiled warmly, nodded slightly, and said, "Today I want to take it away."
"No problem."
The other twin shopkeeper, Joe Lais, who had the same tall and thin build as Ferry and short fire-red hair, squeezed out from between two rows of shelves filled with goods. He winked and handed a couple of suspicious-looking parcels to a student while patting Mo Tan’s shoulder forcefully: "The items you want are downstairs, Mr. Frank, we can leave now."
"Mm, thank you, Joe."
Mo Tan nodded vigorously, following Joe down a spiral staircase in a corner of the first floor and through an active hatch in the middle of a room that resembled a rundown warehouse, going straight to B2F of this [Quirky] shop.
"Tan, you sure know how to give people a hard time."
After passing through the hatch, Joe’s face still gleamed with a smile, but it was significantly different from the previous business-like sunny smile. Simply put, the proportion of friendliness was much greater, and it was not as enthusiastic as before. If observed closely, it even showed a notable hint of laziness.
Considering his seamless change of address, it was evident that the Lais twins were aware of Frank Hughes’s true identity, at least they understood that ’Frank=Tan Mo=Mo Tan little brother’.
This was not surprising, although only one person named Yi Dong in the world truly knew everything about ’Mo Tan’ beyond certain extreme information, this did not mean everyone else was to be guarded against. In fact, if separated, his roles in the Realm of Innocence are surrounded by people who somewhat ’understand’ him.
It is rare for most people to live without secrets, and correspondingly, it is rare for someone to wear a mask at all times.
Even the mentally unstable Mo Tan is no exception.
Everywhere, there is someone who comprehends the existence of ’Mo Tan’ to the fullest extent, regardless of what he says, does, or thinks, no matter what state Mo Tan is in—absolute neutrality, orderly good, or chaotic neutral—that person named Yi Dong would stand by ’Mo Tan’ unconditionally.
However, recently, to be more precise, since entering the Realm of Innocence during the past six months, the number of entities that could somewhat touch upon Mo Tan’s ’secrets’ has grown explosively. Although these so-called ’secrets’ are rather simplistic and straightforward when viewed individually, it remains incredible for Mo Tan, who has always tightly controlled his social circle.
Ferry Lais and Joe Lais, the twin brothers who knew ’Mo Tan’ in reality and seemed to possess significant energy both in and out of the game, are somewhat secret-keepers, though not as reliable as Yi Dong.
Due to certain complicated reasons, Mo Tan did not provide these brothers with the mainstream information of ’Hei Fan=Mo Tan’, but directly equated the role of ’Tan Mo’ with his real-life self, using this as a premise to continue engagements with the brothers.
He had three reasons for doing so:
Firstly, Ferry and Joe, although familiar with ’Mo Tan’, hardly interacted with the character ’Hei Fan’ in the game. According to Mo Tan’s understanding, these brothers hardly left their shops; hence, as long as he was cautious (such as disguising himself when delivering the Wang Bugs), Mo Tan believed it was difficult to notice any discrepancy.
Secondly, compared to the Priest of the Church of the Dawn ’Hei Fan’, the character of ’Tan Mo’ is more suited (and prefers) to engage in shady dealings. In Mo Tan’s subjective view, Ferry and Joe, even in reality, are somewhat related to ’mysterious affairs’ and are likely to be discreet, making their compatibility excellent.
Lastly, even if things were exposed, based on Mo Tan’s insight into Ferry and Joe, it’s unlikely they would report him directly. Moreover, since these twins have significant ties to a world probably full of various ’supernatural entities’, possibly being one of them, they might, for the sake of friendship, even lend a hand after learning the truth. For example, find an enigmatic white-bearded old man to dance a deity before Mo Tan, and suddenly cure him of his mental illness.
