"Hmm..."
After leaving the spacious and bright ’main hall’, Motan appeared out of thin air amidst a ripple of distortion. His expression was somewhat stiff, and he sighed gently, turning his eyes with a complex look to the enthusiastic petite girl beside him. "This place feels a bit ominous."
Thanks to the dual protection of the Rune Baseplates and space shields, the recent teleportation did not place an ounce of burden on Frank Hughes’ body, which, although not exactly frail, could not be considered robust either. Yet, even so, after growing accustomed to the transparent, bright, and grand aesthetic of the library, this ’library room’—with its area not even a hundred square meters and a deep, dim feeling—still made him feel somewhat uncomfortable.
"It’s just an illusion."
Double Leaf glanced at Motan, lazily stepping forward with a stride that could hardly get any bigger, wandering leisurely among the densely packed bookshelves: "No matter what, this is one of the most protected places in Academy City. If the managers wished, they could make it more upscale with a flick of the wrist. So the atmosphere that feels like a paranormal film set is probably deliberately created."
"Paranormal film... set?"
Following behind Double Leaf, Motan was taken aback for a moment before nodding slightly: "Though I’m not entirely sure what that means, does Miss Futaba think this atmosphere might deter those curious students?"
The girl nodded lightly, not caring much. She then shrugged and said, "That’s probably it, but the effect might not be that good. After all, everyone here is considered elite, and those who are permitted into the forbidden section are the elite of the elite, so... hehe."
She spread her hands, a trace of mockery curving at her lips, unclear whether she was mocking those she called ’elites’ or ridiculing the ’deterrent methods’ adopted by the bigwigs for the forbidden section.
"Hmm... even though Miss Futaba says so, I think being a bit cautious still seems sensible."
Seemingly a bit intimidated, Motan sheepishly touched his nose, closely following Double Leaf’s pace: "After all, this is the ’forbidden section’, right?"
"Yes, it is the forbidden section, but both you and I are of age, aren’t we?"
Double Leaf ran her slender white fingers across a row of book spines, enthusiastically examining the surrounding ancient books while smiling: "So there’s absolutely no problem!"
Motan tugged at the corners of his mouth, helplessly replying: "Even if Miss Futaba’s tone and expression are quite cute... but the ’forbidden books’ mentioned just now and the ’forbidden books’ here are completely different concepts."
"Tsk, don’t you think talking about some vulgar topics in this kind of atmosphere can help relieve the tension?"
Double Leaf clicked her tongue, then turned to glare fiercely at Motan: "Also, you’re standing too close, Mr. Hughes. Even though I’m probably quite an easygoing girl, I’d be bothered by harassment like this, so could you please move a bit further away?"
Motan awkwardly halted, waved his hand and said: "You’ve got it wrong, I’m just a little scared."
Casually pulling a book titled "The Darkness You Don’t Know" from the shelf, the girl absentmindedly flipped through it while rolling her eyes: "Scared of what?"
"Scared that I might get harmed by the ’knowledge’ here."
Motan smiled without a trace of embarrassment, showing no signs of unease or tension. Both his expression and demeanor were just as usual, warmly saying: "Even if Miss Futaba is brave and skilled, this place isn’t too friendly for an ordinary person like me, so..."
"So you’re cuddling up to me like a quail?"
With a flourish, Double Leaf wrote a strikingly large [Silly] with the feather pen from her satchel on the first page of "The Darkness You Don’t Know", and tossed the somewhat stream-of-consciousness book on the ground, covering her mouth in a light laugh: "I didn’t see it, Frank, you’re so afraid of death."
Frank nodded openly, earnestly replying: "Yes, perhaps the past me lacked some respect for death, but after meeting Diana, I..."
"You don’t want to die anymore, right? Because of great~~ love~~, ugh."
Double Leaf interrupted impatiently, holding her stomach and making a retching gesture: "I’m telling you, aren’t you just excessively hypocritical? Why can’t you talk properly? Must you bring Diana into everything? Your image is already well-established, overdoing it is just overkill, you know?"
Facing the girl’s sharp and prickly words, Frank Hughes maintained a decent and rather gentlemanly smile, slightly bowing: "If I have upset you, I’m willing to apologize."
"Then put away your ’Diana doctrine’, and drop the honorifics. All this Miss Futaba, Miss Futaba, it’s disgusting."
"Understood, Double Leaf."
"So, can’t you really move further away?"
"I’d prefer if you could protect me when danger arises."
Motan’s smile was sincere and straightforward.
"You truly have no ambition, huh..."
Seemingly lacking even the energy to glare, Double Leaf slumped her shoulders, continuing to meticulously examine the books stored on this level, at a seemingly unhurried pace but with exceptional efficiency.
