"Please, both of you, stay."
With the words of the Book Spirit falling, Double Leaf almost stopped instantly, while Frank Hughes, walking beside him, first froze for a moment and then turned his head puzzled and uneasy, looking nervously at the Book Spirit while shrinking behind Double Leaf.
The reason is simple, unlike the unprepared Frank Hughes, Double Leaf immediately received the system prompt ’trigger conditions for follow-up quest lines have been met’ after completing the straightforward task just now, so he was mentally prepared.
Of course, Motan naturally had the same task, but considering the person standing next to Double Leaf at this moment is Frank Hughes, a properly timed surprise was more appropriate.
"Can’t you have a little backbone? He’s already told us who he is."
Double Leaf gave Motan a helpless glare and then turned towards the Book Spirit, with a slight smile, asked, "So, is there anything else?"
Standing up from the spacious desk, the Book Spirit, whose emotional fluctuations were not apparent, walked slowly to the two, nodded slightly, and said, "Yes."
"Speak."
Double Leaf was concise and to the point. Perhaps because she had just received a benefit and was planning more, the sharp-tongued girl did not follow her previous style by letting the Book Spirit ’release’ but instead asked him to ’speak.’
"Firstly, I need to emphasize one point, Lady Double Leaf."
The Book Spirit turned his gaze to the thin black parchment in Double Leaf’s hand, and calmly said, "Even though I have compiled all the books in areas one through thirty-eight, which theoretically could help you, and noted their locations and summaries for you, it is still insufficient for you to transform in a short time."
The girl slightly squinted her eyes and looked at the Tower Spirit with focus, "Are you playing with me?"
"Not at all, I only promised to ’recommend books,’ not ’solve problems.’"
The Book Spirit shook his head and spoke lightly, "In fact, I have tried my best within the scope I can easily handle. The thirty-five zone is fine, but the knowledge in the prohibited area should not theoretically be categorized as ’reward,’ yet I gave you the essence of layers thirty-six to thirty-eight as a gift."
Double Leaf laughed dryly and glanced sideways, "Let’s skip the bargaining part and directly tell me your purpose."
"’Proposal,’ this word is more accurate than ’purpose.’"
The Book Spirit corrected and then smoothly accepted Double Leaf’s suggestion, speaking frankly, "As a spirit nurtured by this library, my essence is not of a ’Sage’ or ’Collector,’ but a pure ’Seeker of Knowledge,’ yet I can only ’seek’ and ’observe.’"
Double Leaf impatiently clicked her tongue, "Get to the point."
"The point is, whether it’s knowledge or truth, neither can be easily sought or observed."
The Book Spirit’s expression did not waver, but his words carried a weight, "Moreover, books do not contain ’potential,’ unlike you, vibrant life forms. Even the most profound book is merely ’dead wisdom,’ or rather, they were never alive to begin with."
Double Leaf cursed, obviously unimpressed by the Book Spirit’s deep summary.
Meanwhile, Frank Hughes seemed thoughtful, pressing his index finger against his chin hesitantly, "So, Mr. Book Spirit, are you hoping to use us, these ’vibrant lives,’ to explore possibilities not contained within books?"
"Absolutely correct."
The Book Spirit nodded in approval, while surveying the numerous heavy bookshelves looming through the mist around them, said, "Although I also possess my own ’character,’ repeatedly reading the books in this building countless times has already reduced my ’potential’ to the minimum. Many times, out of no other choice, I regard matters that should be quite controversial as truth, due to lack of comparison and discernment."
"So?"
Double Leaf yawned, lazily asking, "Do you intend to have us accompany you here reading books, then every now and then have a brainstorming session to broaden horizons with debates?"
"Actually, it’s not that complicated."
The Book Spirit laughed, and then waved a hand, laying open a ’book’ before the two, a book with no title, author name, or printing unit, in simple terms, nothing on the cover, and inside, just masses of blank pages, "If you’re willing, I can provide a stage now, allowing you to write new stories in this stagnant illusion."
"Write... stories?"
Double Leaf quietly repeated, suddenly frowning, "Wait a minute, does it mean this useless man beside me also has to join?"
The Book Spirit slightly nodded, "If Mr. Frank is willing."
"Why?"
Double Leaf aggressively demanded, "You just said he’s different from me and doesn’t meet the requirements, so now why suddenly..."
"If referring to ’bringing unknown knowledge to me,’ Mr. Frank indeed is far less qualified than Lady Double Leaf, because there is a ’fundamental’ difference between you two."
